420 with CNW — Germany’s Marijuana Industry Soars as Country Prepares to Legalize Recreational Use

Last month, Germany’s new coalition government revealed that it planned to legalize marijuana for recreational use. This announcement has catapulted the country’s budding marijuana industry to new highs, with companies involved in the market now focusing on growing.

CEO Synbiotic is one of the companies that would like to establish a chain of dispensaries which would offer a full array of cannabis-related products — everything from edible gummies and flower to tinctures. The company is a major player in the country’s nascent cannabinoid sector, investing in everything from researchers to cultivators and distributors.

Many believe that legalization would be a game-changer for the international business of growing and selling cannabis. If the plan is actualized, the country would join Uruguay and Canada, which are the only countries that allow the commercial sale of recreational marijuana. Apart from the two nations, a number of states in the United States have also legalized the recreational use and sale of marijuana.

Demecan managing director Constantin von der Groeben stated that the herb’s legalization would make Germany the biggest country to allow the sale of marijuana globally, in terms of population. Demecan is the sole independent company authorized to produce medical marijuana in Germany. It is involved in every process of manufacturing marijuana, from growing and processing to storage and delivery.

Germany legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in 2017.

While the government’s intentions on legalization are still unclear, the three coalition partners revealed that fiscal arguments played a role in their decision to legalize the plant. Findings from a recent study show that decriminalization could deliver net benefit of more than €4.5 billion ($5.1 billion) to the state annually. This figure was inclusive of about €1.3 billion ($1.47 billion) in savings on legal costs and police costs and roughly €2.8 billion ($3.17 billion) in tax revenue.

The announcement also triggered increased interest in the sector, which skeptics believe will subside just as quickly. Some give the example of Canada where excitement about cannabis legalization in 2018 faded after the market’s growth fell short of expectations.

However, this boom and bust may not occur in Germany, as barriers to entry remain high. Only three firms in the country have a license to grow the plant: Demecan, Aurora and Aphria, with the last two being subsidiaries of Canadian companies. The companies are all required to adhere to a good manufacturing practice (“GMP”) standard, which is a globally standard for pharmaceutical products.

For cannabis companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) that are keeping an eye on the international market, the news out of Germany brings hope that a lot more countries could soon open their markets to marijuana and avail growth opportunities for established companies in that industry.

420 with CNW — Cannabis Group Publishes Guide for Marijuana Dispensaries at Risk of Robberies

Businesses in the cannabis space have always faced the risk of burglaries and robberies. For starters, they sell a product that is in extremely high demand both on the legal and black markets. Secondly, marijuana’s classification as a Schedule I controlled drug has made it difficult for cannabis businesses to access banking services because most banks refuse to serve cannabis businesses. This forces them to transact on a cash-only basis, meaning cannabis businesses tend to have large amounts of cash on-site.

Consequently, marijuana businesses present an attractive target to criminals looking to make a quick buck. Over the last couple of months, the rate of robberies in the cannabis sector has spiked. Businesses in San Francisco alone reported more than 25 break-ins, stolen property and millions of dollars in damage in the last two months. As such, a leading cannabis advocacy group is providing resources that will guide marijuana businesses on how they can mitigate and respond to instances of theft.

Americans for Safe Access has recently developed a Robbery Preparedness Guide to help marijuana businesses respond to the increase in crime. Rising crime is a nationwide issue, the advocacy group says, and the guide is meant to help keep cannabis dispensaries, staff and patients safe. The free guide will be instrumental in helping cannabis businesses create security plans and policies to help mitigate burglaries and robberies. It provides information on how cannabis business owners should prepare their businesses, what they should do during and after robberies, and other things they can do to secure your premises.

Additional suggestions include creating and enforcing policies on locking up, inventory storage and management, installing visible security cameras and efficient alarm systems, regularly changing when cash is moved from the shop, doing what the robbers say to keep the interactions as short as possible and calling the police as soon as possible after a crime has been committed. Robberies in the cannabis space have become so prevalent that cannabis businesses in Oakland, California, banded together and requested that officials provide a tax amnesty which would protect and sustain small and minority-owned businesses that have lost up to $5 million to robberies.

Lawmakers are also working to provide the cannabis industry with sufficient banking protections via legislation that would protect banks that choose to work with companies in the cannabis space. With access to financial services, cannabis businesses won’t need to operate on a cash-only basis, eliminating one of the major reasons they are at risk of robberies. The Secure and Fair Enforcement (“SAFE”) Banking Act, which would allow cannabis businesses to access banking services without fear of federal reprisal, has advanced past the House five times but is yet to pass the Senate.

Only federal reform would address many of the hurdles that licensed marijuana companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) face as they try to balance between adhering to enabling state laws while also being cognizant of the prohibitive stance of the federal government.

420 with CNW — Survey Finds One-Half of US Marijuana Consumers Would Choose Marijuana over Alcohol

The past couple of years have seen more than two dozen states pass some form of cannabis regulation, making marijuana more accessible to the public than ever. Customers are loving it — in just a few short years, consumers have purchased billions of dollars’ worth of legal cannabis. Based on the almost insane demand for cannabis, experts project that the industry will see significant growth in the future, achieving a valuation of $198 billion in 2028. Customers are especially attracted to cannabis due to its allegedly potent and versatile medical abilities.

Studies have found that cannabis can have therapeutic effects, including reducing pain, anxiety and depression. While the industry definitely needs more research into marijuana’s potential risks and benefits, there is plenty of proof that cannabis has positive attributes for health. This means that different people will consume cannabis for different reasons, be it to alleviate pain or induce sleep. According to a new survey, a growing number of cannabis consumers in the country prefer cannabis to alcohol.

Titled “Cannabis & Wellness: A New Consumer Paradigm,” the survey from New Frontiers Data looked at cannabis consumer trends and patterns of use. Although the most common reasons for using cannabis was, unsurprisingly, to relieve stress and relax, 23% of the respondents said they use the controversial plant to boost their overall wellness. Almost 80% of those who were surveyed said that using cannabis had a positive impact in their lives. Most importantly, one-half of the respondents said that they had began replacing alcohol consumption with cannabis.

Younger generations have been drinking less and less alcohol, so it’s not surprising that these younger consumers would turn to cannabis. Not only does the substance have zero of the side effects alcohol consumption induces, but it also has some therapeutic benefits. Players such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) in the cannabis industry have been quick to notice this, developing a range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic cannabis-infused drinks to meet market demand for an alternative to alcohol.

The coronavirus pandemic saw a spike in cannabis consumption as people struggled to cope with the stress of being locked inside for long periods of time and potentially contracting a deadly virus. Field Trip Health ran a survey of 2,015 Canadians this year and found that a majority were feeling lethargic and depressed during the pandemic.

An estimated 50% of the respondents said they had upped their cannabis consumption while 44% increased their alcohol consumption. The study also found that more than 70% of those surveyed had increased their screen time and another 70% were overeating to cope with the pandemic.

420 with CNW — Study Shows One in Three Programmers Use Cannabis

A new study has found that a considerable number of software programmers use cannabis while on the job, with most revealing that it boosted their creativity and got them into the zone. The study was conducted by University of Michigan researchers. They based their research on anecdotal evidence, which suggested that programmers were more likely to use marijuana while working.

The researchers carried out a survey to find out whether this was true, obtaining feedback from more than 800 developers, who explained how cannabis helped or impacted their work.

The researchers were primarily motivated by the fact that policies for drug testing were still common in the programming sector, which they proposed could contribute to hiring shortages for some jobs. In their survey summary, they explained that the prohibition of the use of marijuana in software engineering had contributed to a hiring shortage for some programming jobs in the U.S. government.

The researchers discovered that 35% of the participants had used marijuana when programming or finishing up on other tasks related to software engineering. More than 70% of those who had tried cannabis while working also revealed that they had  consumed cannabis in the last year.

Of the total number surveyed, 53% admitted to using marijuana while programming more than 10 times while 27% stated that they used the drug at least two times a week. Another 4% admitted that they used marijuana while on the job on a daily basis.

The researchers also asked the programmers why they chose to use cannabis, finding that most used the substance because it made tasks related to programming more enjoyable. Others admitted to using the herb to come up with more creative solutions.

The researchers also discovered that the most common tasks people performed when using cannabis were testing, coding, prototyping and brainstorming. In addition, the scientists found that about 30% of respondents used marijuana for reasons related to their general wellness, noting that while wellness did inspire the use of marijuana while programming, it wasn’t the biggest motivation.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered that even programmers who didn’t use the herb supported marijuana reform, with more than 90% of the participants maintaining that the use of cannabis should be legalized for medicinal and recreational use.

The group noted in its conclusion that the results had implications for drug policies for programming jobs and highlighted the need for more research into the use of marijuana while programming, as well as digging for a deeper science-based understanding of the marijuana products sold in state-legal dispensaries and produced by companies that operate legally, such as American Cannabis Partners. The survey’s findings were published in arXiv, Cornell University’s repository.

420 with CNW — Five Benefits of Cannabis, According to CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the chief medical correspondent for CNN, has been exploring the effects of smoking cannabis for a couple of years now. He believes that cannabis provides considerable medical benefits. His most recent report, which focused on the use of cannabis to help relieve pain and symptoms of various health conditions, discusses his thoughts on the matter.

During his quest to learn more about marijuana’s benefits, Gupta discovered a study conducted in Israel by a world renowned scientist, Raphael Mechoulam. The study centered on the use of cannabis as a treatment for refractory seizures in children. While additional studies are needed to learn more about the mechanisms behind how cannabis works, the researcher observed a reduction in seizures, especially in children who didn’t respond to existing seizure medication.

Mechoulam believes that major advances in the treatment and medical-scientific aspects of epilepsy with the help of cannabinoids such as CBD will soon be realized. This comes after the U.S. FDA approved an oral CBD solution known as Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures linked to Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which are both epilepsy syndromes. CBD has exhibited anti-epileptic actions and acts as an anticonvulsant as well as an antioxidant and neuroprotective. This means that even if an individual experiences a seizure, the compound offers protection against the electrical storm devastating the brain.

In his report, Gupta highlighted that some families had also turned to marijuana to help relieve the symptoms of autism, noting that the herb was an answer for many individuals. Research supports this, with findings from various studies showing that medical cannabis extracts appeared to manage the symptoms of kids suffering from autism.

Autism spectrum disorder, or autism in short, is a broad range of conditions characterized by repetitive behaviors and challenges with social skills. For instance, an Israeli clinical trial found that cannabis extracts improve the social responsiveness of children with autism and reduced their disruptive behavior.

Researchers advise that parents of children with autism wait for more data on the safety and effectiveness of cannabis in managing autism before they try treating their children with medical cannabis. This is because children treated with cannabis may sometimes suffer from disturbed sleep, sleepiness and reduced appetite.

Gupta also found that doctors in Israel had prescribed medical cannabis to more than 20,000 patients suffering from post-traumatic stress, epilepsy, cancer and degenerative ailments to help manage their symptoms. These findings make a strong case for the scientific community taking a closer look at what more the cannabis products manufactured by licensed companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) could offer in terms of possible benefits to the consumers.
