CannabisNewsBreaks – InMed Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: INM) Begins Phase 2 Clinical Trial Evaluating CBN in the EB Treatment

InMed Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INM), a leader in the manufacturing and clinical development of rare cannabinoids, has started its Phase 2 clinical trial of INM-755 (cannabinol) cream in the treatment of epidermolysis bullosa (“EB”). According to the company, this is the first time cannabinol has advanced to a Phase 2 clinical trial to be studied as a therapeutic option to treat a disease. The study will be conducted in seven different countries at 11 sites; the countries include Austria, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Israel and Serbia. The company has filed clinical trial applications in all seven countries and has received approval from Austria, France, Greece and Israel, with the first site initiation visit being completed at a clinical site in Austria. Screening for eligible participants is set to begin in Austria soon. INM-755 is a cannabinol cream being considered as a topical therapy to treat EB and potentially other dermatological diseases. 420 with CNW — Growing Numbers of Menopausal Women Resort to Cannabis for Symptomatic Relief

Between the ages of 45 to 55, most women will experience menopause as their estrogen levels steadily decline. One in 100 women will start going through this inevitable stage of life before they hit age 40. Regardless of when menopause starts, the symptoms associated with it are similar across the board. They include irregular periods, chills, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes and weight gain among others.

Although some medications are proven to help women weather these symptoms, an increasing number of women have been turning to cannabis for this purpose. According to a new study, a “good number” of midlife women have been using the controversial plant, believing that it will help to treat some of the more uncomfortable menopause symptoms. Katherine Babyn, lead researcher and a graduate student at the University of Alberta in Canada, says that plenty of middle-aged women in the menopause transition period of their lives are using cannabis to alleviate symptoms that “tend to overlap with menopause.”

But can cannabis actually help women deal with these symptoms? Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director of the North American Menopause Society (“NAMS”), says that unfortunately, there is minimal scientific evidence proving that cannabis can effectively treat menopause-related symptoms. Since marijuana’s effect on women going through menopause hasn’t been formally studied, she says, we do not know the possible benefits and risks. Consequently, women who are using cannabis to alleviate their symptoms are essentially using a drug that has not been studied.

However, the study revealed that plenty of middle-aged women feel like they have benefited from using cannabis. The researchers from the University of Alberta surveyed an estimated 1,500 middle-aged women from the province of Alberta in Canada and found that two-thirds of the respondents had used cannabis for some time, with one-third having done so within the past month. Of the women who were currently using cannabis, 75% said they were using it for medical purposes. This is despite the fact that only 23% actually had medical marijuana prescriptions.

In addition, the study reported that 52% consumed edibles, 47% used cannabis oils, 41% preferred to smoke, and 26% vaped. Up to 74% of the respondents said their symptoms had improved once they started using cannabis, says Nese Yuksel, senior researcher and a professor of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Alberta. Other noteworthy stats include 74% of respondents reported using cannabis to sleep better, 59% used it for anxiety, 58% to boost concentration, 55% to reduce feelings of irritability, and 53% to alleviate muscle and joint aches.

Still, Yuksel says that without any scientific backing, the researchers cannot make an association between cannabis use and reduced menopause symptoms. Although the women may feel as if they’re seeing some benefit from consuming cannabis, she says, the researchers cannot conclusively say that the drug can treat menopause symptoms. Ultimately, they all agreed that we need more research on marijuana’s potential benefits and risks to see whether or not it can be an effective treatment for menopause symptoms.

Companies that manufacture a variety of CBD products, such as The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER), may inadvertently be helping menopausal women if some of the preliminary studies on cannabidiol, a major compound in cannabis, are anything to go by.

420 with CNW — Amazon Voices Support for Federal Cannabis Legalization, Ends Employee Drug Testing

Amazon recently let up on its screening policies for cannabis, with company officials vocalizing their support for the federal legalization of the plant. Beth Galetti, who is the company’s HR boss, stated that the company had restored employment eligibility for applicants and past employees who had been denied employment or fired during cannabis screenings.

Galetti added that pre-employment cannabis testing had disproportionately impacted communities of color by impeding job placement and, by extension, the growth of the economy. She noted that this inequitable treatment was unacceptable.

Earlier in June, company officials stated that they would no longer screen their workers for cannabis. This is excluding job candidates who are applying for positions that involve the operation of heavy equipment or truck drivers, as those positions are regulated by the federal Department of Transportation.

Amazon also revealed that following an incident, it would continue to conduct tests for alcohol and drugs and impairment checks on the job.

The international e-commerce company decided to let up on its cannabis standards after a growing number of states in the U.S. began legalizing the plant. Galetti notes that the loosened standards are expected to bring more job applicants into the company.

Thus far, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use in 18 states as well as in Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the District of Columbia. Medical marijuana is also legal in 36 states across the United States, as well as in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam and the District of Columbia.

In addition to this, Galleti stated that the company’s pace of growth meant that it was always in search of new members to add to its team. Recently Amazon has been using various incentives, including free college tuition and hiring bonuses, in an attempt to attract more applicants. Now company officials have announced plans to removing pre-employment testing for marijuana, which would allow the company to extend its applicant pool.

The trillion-dollar company is also calling for the federal government to legalize cannabis, with company officials revealing that they support the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (“MORE”) Act. The objective of the act is to invest in communities that have been affected by the drug war, expunge criminal records for those incarcerated for possession and decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.

Recently, Amazon threw its weight behind similar legislation dubbed the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. In a letter addressed to legislators about this measure, the renowned company urged Congress to allow for resentencing of any individuals serving time in federal prison for nonviolent cannabis crimes and expungement of the records for those crimes.

The increasing use of cannabis as a medicinal substance is causing a spike in the demand for IoT dose-measuring devices such as the ones made by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) alongside other enabling technologies.

420 with CNW — Benefits of Switching to Hemp Fashion, Clothing

As the popularity of cannabis grows, so does that of the hemp plant. Hemp is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant, which has various industrial applications, including as a construction material. Hemp is a highly sustainable crop that can nourish the soil without the need of pesticides. The plant’s stalk has low levels of THC and is fibrous. Its fabric, which is not only durable, long lasting and efficient, is soft and comfortable on the skin.

You can find bedding items such as blankets, duvets and bedsheets, as well as tablecloths and clothes, including skirts, pants, jackets and dresses made from hemp. Below are some benefits of hemp fabric.

Softens with time

As mentioned above, clothes made from hemp are comfortable to wear and, with every wash, they get softer. The clothes also don’t get distorted after multiple washes and uses.

Features antimicrobial properties

Unlike other fabrics such as polyester and cotton, hemp fabric fights against bacteria such as those that cause body odor. Hemp fabric is also resistant to mildew and mold.

Wears well

In addition to being easy on the skin, the fabric is breathable and easily absorbs sweat. Hemp fabric is also resistant to fading and is easy to dye.

Good for soil health

Hemp can be grown in almost any soil and it helps restore some of the important nutrients that may have been lost in that soil. Hemp cultivators can plant hemp as part of crop rotation as well as grow multiple cycles of the plant on the same parcel of land. The plant is also pest resistant, and it doesn’t require fertilizers because its leaves provide enough to the soil when they shed. In addition, hemp is biodegradable

Doesn’t require large amounts of water

Hemp can thrive even without a lot of water, unlike other plants such as cotton, which need lots hydration. The infrequent use of chemicals for hemp cultivation also helps avoid soil erosion, which in turn spares water bodies from pollution.

Good for the environment

Almost every industry globally has a carbon footprint, including the fashion industry, which is a huge contributor to environmental and global-warming issues. Adopting hemp clothing to replace fast fashion will help absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as well as combat other climate issues.

As seen above, hemp is the crop that can almost do it all. Given its applications not only in the fashion industry but other industries as well, it makes sense to use hemp, both for a better environment and a better world.

The increasing awareness of the ecobenefits of hemp clothing has resulted in the hemp clothing made by companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) to skyrocket in popularity among consumers who are concerned about the carbon footprint of the fabrics they wear.

420 with CNW — Is CBD Addictive?

If you still haven’t used a cannabidiol (“CBD”) product, I bet you know someone who has. CBD became legal more than two years ago when the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its derivatives. It is one of more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids that are produced by plants in the cannabis family. But unlike marijuana, hemp has minimal amounts of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), the main chemical agent that makes marijuana intoxicating.

As such, CBD is nonpsychoactive, meaning it will not intoxicate you. However, the hemp extract has become incredibly popular within quite a short period for a reason; it is claimed to be full of potent medical properties. People from all over the country have since been using CBD to treat chronic pain, alleviate anxiety and depression, and treat skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis. Furthermore, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has approved the use of a CBD formulation called Epidiolex to treat Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, two rare types of pediatric epilepsy that are extremely hard to treat.

But as CBD becomes more accessible to the public and more people turn to the cannabinoid to address several health issues, one question has echoed in the minds of the public and experts alike: is CBD addictive? With a whopping 33% of Americans claiming to have used CBD at least once in the past, how likely are regular CBD users to get addicted?

According to the limited resources available, it looks like CBD may not be addictive partly due to the fact that it does not have intoxicating effects. A small 2016 study found that, unlike THC, CBD does not produce significant physical and psychological effects such as euphoria and rapid heart rate. When the study participants reported about feelings of intoxication, CBD performed similarly to a placebo.

In fact, studies have found that cannabidiol works contrary to addiction, helping individuals with drug addiction to kick their drug habits. Preliminary studies have found that rather than being an addictive substance, such as alcohol or nicotine, CBD may be able to actually reduce the likelihood of developing a methamphetamine or cocaine-use disorder.

2015 systematic review of available preclinical and clinical data covering the effect of cannabidiol on addictive behaviors concluded that there’s a good chance that CBD may be able to help in the treatment of tobacco and alcohol addiction. Although there is limited research on both the benefits and risks of CBD, the cannabinoid does not appear to be addictive. However, further research is needed to be completely sure of its potential for addiction as well as its potential for treating other drug use disorders.

It is gratifying to know that the CBD products made by companies such as Golden Triangle Ventures Inc. (OTC: GTVH) could potentially play a part in enhancing the health of the consumers of those products, if preliminary research is anything to go by.
