420 with CNW — The Potential Benefits of CBD Skincare Products

You have probably heard of CBD, or cannabidiol, before. Extracted from cannabis or hemp, this chemical compound is said to have a wide variety of medical applications ranging from relieving pain and anxiety to treating seizures in epileptic patients. Thanks to its supposed medical potential, CBD can now be found in myriad wellness and health products, with the skincare industry especially taking a liking to the versatile hemp extract. But just how beneficial are these CBD-infused sunscreens, lip balms, moisturizers, lotions, masks and other skincare offerings?

According to Austin Kaz, a co-founder of New York-based Sheabrand, skincare product manufacturers add CBD to their products to give those products an extra kick, making them much more effective at treating skin conditions, including acne, eczema and dry skin. One of cannabidiol’s more well-known uses is as an anti-inflammatory agent, making it a great addition to products meant to address inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. CBD does this by interacting with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system and reducing interleukins, which are cell-signaling molecules that can stimulate inflammation.

A couple of studies have found that CBD may have the ability to nourish and rejuvenate dry skin, subsequently reducing itching. Results from a study published in the March–April issue of  Journal Clinical Therapeutics” show that CBD may be able to improve levels of skin hydration by moisturizing the skin and preventing it from losing water and boost skin elasticity. However, the researchers behind the study say this may be due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties or the fatty acids in the ointments the participants used, so more research with a much larger set of participants is needed.

Usually, dermatologists will prescribe topical steroidal creams, which act as anti-inflammatory agents, to treat some skin diseases. While these creams are perfectly safe and work great for most people, some individuals are not comfortable with using steroids of any kind. Robert Dellavalle, an adjunct professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health, says that nonsteroidal therapies that use CBD can fill this gap. This type of therapy has also achieved promising results against a condition that affects millions of people from puberty well into adulthood: acne.

CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties combined with its influence on the production of sebum by skin cells via the CB2 receptors on the sebaceous glands make cannabinoid a potential therapy against acne. Additionally, research shows that topical CBD may be able to help kill gram-positive bacteria that are a known cause of acne. Finally, a CBD-infused sunscreen may help alleviate the effects of sunburns, such as redness.

However, do not look at CBD as a cure-all. Most of the evidence in its favor is anecdotal, and researchers say that even though preliminary studies have uncovered positive results, more research is needed. For the time being, do your homework on CBD, choose high-quality products and make sure you speak to your doctor before you use CBD, especially if you are pregnant or on other medication.

Companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) focus on offering the benefits of CBD while making infused products addressing the skincare needs of their clients.

420 with CNW — CBD Cosmetics Market Expected to Expand to $210 Billion by 2028

A recently published report that focused on the burgeoning CBD market estimates that by 2028, the global legal cannabis market will have reached $70.6 billion. Marijuana is one of the largest growth industries on the stock market. However, not all cannabis business segments are equal, with estimates showing that in the near future, some segments will considerably surpass others. One specific segment to watch is the CBD-infused products market.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the nonpsychoactive compound found in the hemp and cannabis plants. It is one of the two most abundant compounds found in the cannabis plant, with the other compound being THC, which is psychoactive.

Currently, the edibles segment makes up the biggest share of the CBD-infused market. However, the cosmetics segment is expected to occupy a larger share in the near future. CBD-infused products include salves, lotions, gels and balms, which can be applied directly to the skin. These topicals are used for various symptoms, including muscle soreness, inflammation and localized pain.

You may be asking yourself if CBD-infused personal care products can really do all that.

In fact, studies have shown that CBD possesses anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help deal with skin issues such as acne. Research has also found that CBD-infused topicals can be used to treat other issues, including psoriasis, dermatitis, cramping, headaches and arthritis.

Many individuals want to feel and look younger and healthy. This is why the international personal care and beauty market is valued at roughly $420 billion, with projections showing that by 2026, the market will have hit almost $560 billion. The increased adoption of these personal- care products is a main facilitator of the global CBD market’s growth. The market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 26.5%.

Forecasts show that between now and 2028, the CBD-infused product market will reach $216.7 billion, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 45.6%. Projections also show that in the period between 2020 and 2024, the cosmetics market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of about 25%.

Canada and the United States are leading this growth, with at least 35 states in the U.S. legalizing medical cannabis, and Canada legalizing both recreational and medical marijuana. Other key markets for CBD-infused cosmetics include the United Kingdom, Mexico, China and Germany.

Various companies have joined the CBD-infused cosmetics market, including Valens Company Inc., which is involved in the sale of health as well as wellness products such as CBD bath bombs. Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) has also entered the market and offers a line of CBD wellness products.

420 with CNW — Trials on Marijuana-Based Treatments for Gynecological Conditions to Begin in 2022

Clinical trials to examine the effectiveness and safety of marijuana-based treatments for various gynecological conditions are expected to begin early next year. The trials will evaluate marijuana-based pharmacology products developed by Gynica, a female technology startup company based in Jerusalem.

The startup believes that the plant’s active ingredients can help ease painful gynecological conditions, including endometriosis and painful menstruation, which is also known as dysmenorrhea. Traditional treatments, such as hormone therapy, over-the-counter painkillers and surgical intervention. can be inadequate and pose their own health risks, as in the case of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a disorder which causes tissues that normally line the uterus, known as the endometrium, to grow outside the uterus. These tissues usually become trapped inside the body and thicken, causing a build-up of adhesions and scar tissue. This results in excessive bleeding, painful intercourse and painful menstruation. In some cases, endometriosis can cause infertility.

Endometriosis has no definitive cause and no cure. It takes between 6 to 10 years for the disorder to be properly diagnosed, despite the fact that it affects every 1 in 10 women of reproductive age globally. This equates to about 180 million girls and women around the globe.

Gynica hopes to meet these unaddressed needs in women’s health by developing marijuana-based solutions for these gynecological conditions.

The CEO and co-founder of the start-up, Yotam Hod, stated that there exists so many gaps in how conditions that affect women are handled by both the scientific community and the medical community. The company has developed proprietary vaginal suppositories, which Hod says have been designed to decrease pain as well as inflammation, which is a key factor in both dysmenorrhea and endometriosis.

Dysmenorrhea is also common, with physicians noting that the associated pain varies between mild and severe. It is estimated that between 40% and 95% of women of reproductive age suffer from dysmenorrhea. Physicians note that for some individuals, dysmenorrhea and endometriosis are related.

Gynica believes that endometriosis and dysmenorrhea may be associated with a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system. The company references published research, which states that, after the brain, the female reproductive system is the region with the most endocannabinoid receptors. The endocannabinoid system is comprised of natural marijuana-like molecules produced by the human body, which regulate processes such as reproductive function, sleep, mood, appetite and pain.

Hod notes that their solutions show promise for treating these conditions and maintains that cannabinoid-based treatments may provide an improved solution for women who suffer from these conditions.

If successful, these trials could lend further credence to the profile of marijuana as a medicinal plant. The entire cannabis sector, including companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), could benefit from the positive news such outcomes would trigger.

420 with CNW — Low-Potency Cannabis Drinks Look to Dominate Beverages Market

The past few years have seen the cannabis industry grow from essentially nothing to a juggernaut worth billions of dollars in sales. Cannabis edibles have reigned supreme, with CBD gummies being among the most searched for foods online in 2018 thanks, in part, to their discreetness and ease of use. One of the fastest-growing industries in America, the state-legal cannabis sector is constantly in flux, and players in this controversial space are now looking to cash in on a new product that has been gaining more mainstream attention: cannabis beverages.

Forget alcohol or your daily cup of coffee — customers have been increasingly looking for alternatives to common beverages and low-potency, cannabis-infused drinks have emerged as a strong contender. Thanks to improving technology, companies in the cannabis space can now produce smooth and consistently dosed cannabis drinks, making them a viable option for customers who would like to kick back with a nice, relaxing drink that won’t leave them grappling with a hangover the next day.

According to a 2021 report by cannabis analytics firm Headset, cannabis beverage sales have remained at around 1% for the past five years. However, thanks to advancements in cannabis-infusion technology and the entry of several new brands, the cannabis drinks segment has plenty of growth potential.

Headset says that cannabis drinks sales in Canada have risen to nearly 4.5% of total cannabis sales since the start of 2020 while leading industry analyst Million Insights says the global cannabis beverages will be worth $2.8 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.8%. Despite being a relatively young segment, the cannabis beverage space has seen an influx of SME craft companies and larger companies looking to cash in on the increasingly popular product. Heineken, for instance, recently launched a line of cannabis-infused, zero-carb and zero-calorie drinks under the Hi-Fi Hops brand. In addition, Canopy Growth partnered with Constellation brands while HEXO partnered with Moors Coors to create Truss Beverages.

People are looking for cleaner, safer ways to consume cannabis, especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which showed just how detrimental smoking can be and sparked a growing trend toward healthier, less-sugary drinks. A growing number of cafes, lounges and restaurants are already anticipating demand for cannabis beverages, with a 2020 survey of retail sales data in Canada revealing that cannabis-infused drinks had greater growth rates compared to edibles.

Furthermore, another 2020 study conducted for Truss found that awareness of cannabis beverages was at an all-time high at 87% and that 35% of the respondents already consumed cannabis drinks as an alternative to smoking. Only time will tell how the cannabis-infused segment fares. With cannabis beverages sector players such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) consolidating their position in this segment, consumers have a lot to look forward to.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) Marks Milestone with Receipt of 2021 Commercial Export Quota of Psychoactive Cannabis Flower from Colombian Government

Flora Growth (NASDAQ: FLGC), a leading all-outdoor cultivator and manufacturer of global cannabis products and brands, has received its 2021 export quota from the Colombian Technical Quotas Group (“TQG”) of 7,900 kilograms of high-THC cannabis dried flower; the company anticipates using the dried flower for direct sale or to process into derivative products that will be exported. FLGC has already signed numerous agreements for the sale and distribution of the dried flower as well as derivative products into several international jurisdictions, including South Africa, Australia, Latin America and the European Union. FLGC management stated that receiving the quota was a milestone for the company and noted that the new 2021 export quota allocation should be sufficient for the company to meet the international demand for its products for the remainder of 2021 and into 2022. According to the company, the highest prices in the industry are in the psychoactive cannabis market, with the average wholesale price of THC distillate oil projected to reach anywhere from $3,500 to $8,000 per kilogram. “We have been eagerly anticipating and preparing for this announcement by cloning thousands of plants, which we currently have in propagation waiting to be transferred into our fields,” said Flora Growth vice president of agriculture Javier Franco in the press release. “While awaiting this quota, we were focused on optimizing our cultivation strategy and demonstrating our industry-leading production costs of just $0.06 per gram, while continuing to build out our facilities and applying for third party certifications. While we prioritize planting the new high-THC cultivars, it’s also important to note we are actively harvesting our high-CBD crops, and anticipate that this harvest will create a robust pipeline of cannabis derivatives for Flora to use across its premium brands and products, as well as for export to multiple international markets.”

CBDNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Releases Results of Human Clinical Study Showing Effective, Safe BP Reduction

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug-delivery platforms, has announced that its human clinical study HYPER-H21-2, which features LEXX’s patented DehydraTECH(TM)-processed cannabidiol (“CBD”), demonstrates up to a 23% decrease in blood pressure when compared to placebo. According to the announcement, partial results are being released today with additional blood pressure subset analyses, sleep quality and all other data analyses will be reported when complete. Partial results indicate that at selected times during the 24-hour study, volunteers with mild to moderate hypertension averaged as much as a 20 mmHg (i.e., 23%) decrease in BP relative to placebo, with volunteers averaging a notable reduction of 7.0% (p<0.001) in systolic pressure. In addition, over the same period, volunteers averaged a significant reduction of 5.3% (p<0.001) in MAP and a significant reduction of 3.5% in diastolic pressure relative to an increase in diastolic pressure (-0.8 vs. +2.7; p<0.001) from baseline with DehydraTECH-CBD relative to placebo treatment. The company noted that these numbers are particularly remarkable because many drugs currently used to treat hypertension require several weeks of treatment and/or combination dosing before they produce comparable results. Moving forward, Lexaria will evaluate the results of its first two human clinical hypertension studies before its upcoming pulmonary human clinical hypertension study of 2021 begins. “Over the initial 24 hours, Lexaria’s 2021 hypertension program is now delivering blood pressure reduction results competitive with — and in some cases even superior to — established oral pharmaceutical hypertension drugs,” said Lexaria CEO Chris Bunka in the press release. “DehydraTECH-CBD demonstrated a sustained and augmented effect upon blood pressure attenuation throughout the day, indicating effectiveness of the repeat dosing treatment schedule used in this study.”

About Lexaria Bioscience Corp.

Lexaria Bioscience’s patented drug-delivery technology, DehydraTECH(TM), improves the way active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) enter the bloodstream by promoting more effective oral delivery. Since 2016, DehydraTECH has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to increase bioabsorption of cannabinoids and nicotine by 5 to 10 times, and, in some instances with cannabinoids by as much as 27 times, compared to standard industry formulations, as well as reduce time of onset from one to two hours to minutes, and mask unwanted tastes. The delivery systems are also being evaluated for orally administered, anti-viral drugs, nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and more. DehydraTECH has also evidenced an ability to deliver some drugs more effectively across the blood brain barrier. Lexaria operates a licensed in-house research laboratory and holds a robust intellectual property portfolio with 21 patents granted and more than 50 patents pending worldwide.
