420 with CNW — Marijuana Cuts Migraine Pain, Headache by Almost Half, New Study Finds

A lot of people who have used cannabis regularly report that it has pain-relieving effects. But since cannabis has been illegal and intensely policed for such a long time, researchers have barely been able to conduct any research into its alleged health benefits. However, with more than 30 states legalizing cannabis in some form, the controversial drug is finally coming out from under the yoke of prohibition, and this has allowed scientists to take at a closer look at its medical capabilities.

A recent study, which was published in the “Journal of Pain” has confirmed what many cannabis users have known for years: marijuana has the ability to effectively manage pain. Specifically, researchers from Washington State University found that cannabis can reduce migraine and headache pain by half. On top of that, it does so without causing “overuse headaches,” which is when pharmaceutical painkillers actually worsen the patients’ headaches over time with continued use.

Led by Carrie Cuttler, an assistant professor of psychology at Washington State University, the researchers studied “big data” provided by the Strainprint app, which captured data from patients about their symptoms before and after using medical cannabis. More than 1,300 patients suffering from headaches submitted their information in real time, using the application over 12,200 times. Additionally, 650 patients with migraines also tracked changes in the severity of their conditions, using the app more than 7,400 times.

The inhaled medical marijuana, which the patients sourced from producers and distributors in Canada, reduced the migraine severity by 49.6% and headache severity by 47.3%. According to Cuttler, she and her team approached the study in an “ecological way,” looking at actual medical marijuana patients who used whole-plant cannabis to address headaches and migraines in their own homes and environments. Since the archival data provided by the Strainprint app was so immense, it allowed them the researchers to make accurate generalizations to estimate how most patients who used medical cannabis to address headaches and migraines fared.

Although they found no evidence that cannabis led to overuse headaches, which are often caused by regular use of pharmaceutical painkillers, the researchers did notice that the patients used larger doses of cannabis over time. This may be an indication that they developed a tolerance to cannabis the longer they used it and required larger doses to achieve the same effect. They also found that 90% of men reported more sessions to reduce their pain compared to 89.1% of women.

Cannabis concentrates such as cannabis oil were more effective in terms of reducing the severity of headaches and migraines compared to cannabis flower. Surprisingly, the data also indicated that the levels of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), whether higher or lower, did not have a significant impact on pain reduction. As such, it seems that the other less-studied cannabinoids (cannabis produces more than 100 cannabinoids), as well as terpenes and other compounds, may work together and cause a positive effect on marijuana’s pain-relieving capabilities.

However, Cuttler acknowledges the WSU study had several limitations, including the fact that it used data from a self-selected group of patients and had no placebo control group, and that more research is needed. Still, the study is a step in the right direction.

As more studies uncover the therapeutic uses of different cannabis compounds, the extracts and concentrates manufactured by companies such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF) are likely to find their way into many novel products as people look for additional ways to get their dose of medical cannabis.

420 with CNW — Researchers Develop Peptide That Allows Medical Cannabis to Alleviate Pain Without Inducing Side Effects

Researchers have created a peptide that can allow THC to combat pain without inducing the side effects it causes, as observed in mice. This could potentially bring relief to many individuals living with chronic pain and who have no access to medical marijuana.

Data from the CDC shows that nearly 20% of grownups in the United States suffered from chronic pain in the year 2019.

Opioids are the primary medication prescribed for severe pain management and are effective. However, they are easily addictive which has prompted many physicians to stop prescribing them, leaving patients who suffer from chronic pain with fewer options.

The study findings were published in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Prior studies have shown that medical cannabis can be useful in alleviating pain from cancer, neuropathy and migraines, as well as other conditions. However, the side effects observed present issues for the herb’s extensive use as a therapeutic.

Before the study, scientists had discovered a pair of peptides that interrupt interactions between a receptor that binds a neurotransmitter which regulates memory, learning among other cognitive functions as well as serotonin and another receptor that THC targets.

During their study, the researchers injected the peptides into the brains of mice, noting that some of the mice used had lesser memory problems that had been brought about by the THC.

The team, which was made up of researchers like David Andreu and Rafael Maldonado, worked to enhance these peptides by making them orally active, more stable, smaller and able to cross the brain-blood barrier.

To do this, the scientists developed optimized peptides that could still bind to receptors among other things but were smaller in length, in comparison with the original ones. They also used the data obtained from molecular dynamic simulations to improve the peptide sequences for stability, enhanced cell entry and capacity to cross the blood-brain barrier.

After this, the scientists orally administered the peptide to the mice and also injected them with THC, before testing the mice’s memory and pain threshold.

The researchers discovered that the mice that received the optimized peptide and the THC formulation had their pain alleviated in addition to demonstrating improved memory, in comparison with mice that had been treated with the THC formulation alone.

They also found that multiple treatments using the peptide didn’t elicit an immune response. The researchers’ discoveries suggest that the optimized peptide was an ideal candidate for decreasing the cognitive side effects from marijuana-based pain management.

Such studies confirm that the people who have been buying medical marijuana products manufactured by firms like Grapefruit USA Inc. (OTCQB: GPFT) were not disguised recreational users but instead had real medical concerns they needed to address.

HempFusion also sells its Probulin products in Mexico, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Ireland with expectations of entering India and the United Kingdom. According to an April operational update by the company, “COVID and continued lack of clarity from the FDA related to official regulatory guidance for CBD used in dietary supplements, foods and beverages has made 2020 a challenging year. However, these challenges have led to strategic changes, establishing the foundation for HempFusion to succeed in 2021 and beyond.”

420 with CNW — Researchers Find Marijuana May Be Used to Alleviate Pain Caused by Sickle Cell

clinical trial that was conducted by researchers from the University of California-Irvine in collaboration with UC San Francisco has found that marijuana has the potential to be used as a treatment for chronic pain in patients suffering from sickle cell disease. The trials discoveries were reported in JAMA Network Open.

Prof. Kalpna Gupta, who is a member of the Irvine institution’s Center for the Study of Cannabis as well as being an Irvine researcher, states that the trial led them to the discovery that vaporized marijuana is generally safe, suggesting that patients suffering from sickle cell anemia may alleviate their pain using marijuana, which may also be used to address the opioid crisis.

Gupta, who has specialized in medicine, adds that larger studies that have more participants may present researchers with a better view of how marijuana can help individuals suffering from chronic pain.

Opioids are the principal drugs prescribed to manage acute and chronic pain caused by sickle cell disease. However, the increase in deaths linked to opioids has prompted clinicians to prescribe them less, which leaves patients with chronic pain with fewer options.

The placebo-controlled, double-blind randomized trial conducted by the pair of institutions was the first to make use of gold-standard techniques to evaluate the potential of marijuana in pain relief for people suffering from sickle cell disease. The marijuana utilized in the trial contained equal parts of CBD and THC and was acquired from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is under the NIH.

Gupta stated that facing so much pain caused many individuals to turn to marijuana, adding that this was the main reason why people sought the herb from dispensaries. She explained that while researchers weren’t sure whether all forms of marijuana products would have the same effect on chronic pain, they were certain that vaporized marijuana was safer in comparison with other forms, as small amounts reach the body’s circulation.

For the trial, 23 patients who each suffer from pain related to sickle-cell disease were recruited. During the two 5-day inpatient sessions, which were separated by a 4-week period, each patient inhaled a vaporized placebo or vaporized marijuana.

The researchers then evaluated the pain level of each participant throughout the treatment period, which led to the discovery that marijuana’s efficaciousness grew over time. The participants also revealed that their pain didn’t affect their moods or activities such as sleeping and walking.

In addition to this, the researchers note that the level of pain was lower in patients who had inhaled vaporized marijuana in comparison with those who had received the placebo.

With companies such as RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) making smart inhalers that allow patients to be sure about the amount of medical marijuana they are inhaling for pain, it may just be a matter of time before cannabis medicine is as widely accepted as pharmaceuticals.

420 with CNW — California Earmarks $100M to Support Licensed Cannabis Firms During Pandemic

For many states with legal cannabis markets, one of the objectives of legalizing the controversial drug was to cripple the illicit cannabis market by taking away its clientele. While that sounds like a great idea in theory, most of these states have been unable to do any real damage to the illegal market so far. Not only do black market sellers tend to price their cannabis cheaply, but they don’t have to jump through a wide variety of hoops to start selling, and this ensures the black market has an unending supply of affordable cannabis.

California, for instance, legalized marijuana back in 2016, but a mere four years later, the state’s illicit cannabis market has more than three times the number of registered cannabis sellers. Consequently, the state has earmarked $100 million towards supporting its struggling cannabis industry amid the coronavirus and subsequent financial crisis. State Governor Gavin Newsom proposed a measure that would see these funds used to help businesses in the cannabis space turn their provisional licenses into permanent licenses, and it was recently approved by the legislature.

According to Newsom’s office, around 82% of licensed businesses hold provisional licenses, with most cannabis businesses being unable to convert those licenses to permanent ones due to the high costs involved. The state requires permanent license holders to run their businesses in a way that has minimal to zero negative environmental impact, and this usually leads to higher annual operational costs. As many of the registered operators are equity applicants, small businesses and legacy operators, says Newsom’s senior cannabis advisor Nicole Elliot, these costs are often more than they can handle, preventing them from obtaining permanent licenses.

This one-time $100 million grant will be used to help cities in the state employ professionals and staff to assist with the process of turning provisional licenses into permanent ones as well as to aid in business operations. Los Angeles alone will receive $22 million, with the rest of the funds going to cities such as Oakland, San Francisco, Adelanto, Commerce and Desert Hot Springs. Matt Hawkins, managing partner at Entourage Effect Capital and the board chair at Harborside, says the grant will help ease the financial burden on legal companies and allow regulators to process the backlog of licenses much faster.

Newsom has also thrown his weight behind a measure that would extend the Jan. 6, 2022, deadline to apply for provisional licenses by six months. However, it wasn’t included in the most recent state budget bill, and lawmakers are still discussing it.

It is heartwarming to sector players such as XPhyto Therapeutics Corp. (CSE: XPHY) (OTCQB: XPHYF) (FSE: 4XT) to learn that some jurisdictions are taking steps to support the cannabis industry during the pandemic. This is a far cry from the stance of the federal government, which doesn’t recognize state-level cannabis firms as legitimate business concerns.
