420 with CNW — Everything You Ought to Know About the Marijuana Entourage Effect

Cannabis has become extremely popular over the past decade thanks to chemical compounds called cannabinoids. Produced by plants in the hemp family, these compounds interact with the body in unique ways and give rise to a variety of effects. THC is the main psychoactive compound responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating effects while cannabidiol (“CBD”) is medicinal and is claimed to be effective against a wide variety of symptoms.

Cannabis actually produces more than 100 cannabinoids as well as terpenes and flavonoids, but because of its federal status as a Schedule I controlled substance, little research has been conducted into these lesser-known compounds.

In the past few years, scientists have been able to study cannabis more closely, and one theory has become prevalent. Individually, THC and CBD could have their therapeutic benefits, but together, they somehow enhance each other’s beneficial effects while tamping down on the less desirable ones. Terpenes, which are produced by other plants and are responsible for marijuana’s strong aroma, also work together with the cannabinoids to make them more impactful. This synergy is called the entourage effect, and researchers believe understanding it is key to unlocking cannabis’ true potential.

Like cannabinoids, terpenes also have therapeutic effects, and this applies to those that are present in other plants as well. For instance, pine trees produce pinene terpenes, which have anti-inflammatory properties while lavender produces linalool terpenes, which have anti-anxiety effects.

In cannabis, a terpene called myrcene seems to have strong anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibiotic and sedative effects and can have an entourage effect when taken with THC, says Dr. Ethan Russo. He recently authored a seminal research paper titled “Taming THC: Potential Cannabis Synergy and Phytocannabinoid-Terpene Entourage Effects.”

Since cannabis has numerous cannabinoids and terpenes, the theory is that different terpene-cannabinoid and cannabinoid-cannabinoid combinations may have different effects. One study found that although THC can be quite effective at reducing cancer-related pain, it was even more effective when taken with CBD. Additionally, the study found that cannabidiol boosted THC’s analgesic effects while reducing its psychoactive effects, which can be quite helpful for those who are interested in THC’s pain-relieving abilities but don’t want to get high.

Cannabinoids such as THC interact with the endocannabinoid system (“ECS”), which is in charge of regulating functions such as pain, sleep and appetite. These are all functions that contribute to the body’s internal balance or homeostasis. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t interact with the ECS, but it affects how THC binds with endocannabinoid receptors. Scientists don’t know exactly what causes this, but understanding how this system of receptors and cannabinoids and terpenes alter functionality could allow scientists to harness the entourage effect and open up cannabis to a wider variety of medical applications.

As firms such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) continue to bring innovative cannabis-based beverages to the market, consumers can expect to get a taste of the different cannabinoid, terpene and flavonoid combinations possible.

Red White & Bloom Brands (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), a multistate cannabis operator and house of premium brands, is featured in an editorial published by NetworkNewsWire (“NNW”), one of 50+ trusted brands within the InvestorBrandNetwork (“IBN”), a multifaceted financial news and publishing company for private and public entities. The article, titled “A Lesson in Cannabis: Second Mover Can Be Better Position,” looks at what companies looking to grow in the cannabis market can learn from pioneers in the space. “Even though medical marijuana had been legal in some U.S. states for more than a decade, the substance didn’t gain much recognition until Colorado set the market on its head in 2012 by making adult-use marijuana legal. Since then, other states have followed suit, while in 2018, Canada went all-in to become the first developed nation with weed legalized at the federal level,” the article states. “Not surprisingly, North American companies and investors were tripping over themselves trying to capitalize on the massive burgeoning market. In all market segments, plenty of lessons were learned as everyone from companies to investors to lawmakers worked to organize a brand-new market.”

420 with CNW — Massachusetts Regulators Extend Cannabis Telehealth, Curbside Pickup

At the onset of the coronavirus pandemic last year, the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission permitted medical cannabis patients to access telehealth appointments and have their prescriptions delivered for curbside pickup in an attempt to increase safety. Consumers were allowed to place their orders either online or via phone; they could then pick up those orders curbside at the stores.

Now, the agency notes, the measures will be allowed to continue for an extended period, despite the State of Emergency declared by Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts coming to an end. The State of Emergency was initially declared in the state on March 10, 2020.

While issuing final administrative orders at the start of this week, the Cannabis Control Commission’s executive director, Shawn Collins, stated that virtual community outreach meetings, telehealth consults and curbside operations would be allowed to continue until Sept. 1, 2021.  However, this date could change if the administrative orders are amended or the commission revokes the order.

For medical patients, clinical visits for purposed such as renewal and consultation can carry on through telehealth appointments. Additionally, individuals who have yet to register but would like to do so are encouraged to do so through telehealth up until September 1. The order notes that after the aforementioned date, clinical visits can occur either by telehealth or in person. As per medical-use regulations, however, any first-time patient will have to visit a clinic in person in order to be issued with an initial certificate of registration.

In addition to this, marijuana dispensaries can continue to carry out sales for curbside pickup by electronic means and by phone. This, the order asserts, will help keep both customers and patients safe.

The commission also stated that virtual meetings could be conducted by any individual who would like to host a community outreach meeting, as it would be safe and also allow those who couldn’t attend physical gatherings to also take part in them.

In other news, Cloud Creamery is planning on launching marijuana-infused ice cream in the state, as summer sets in. Residents in the state already have access to edible chocolate bars and gummies. Now, David Yusefzadeh of Cloud Creamery wants to heighten the edibles experience by utilizing local products, which will not only attract new consumers but also boost the industry’s growth.

At the start of the month, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission issued a notice to Cloud Creamery, giving the company the go ahead to begin manufacturing operations. The product will be available at Caroline’s Cannabis in UxbridgeWestern Front in Chelsea and Bud’s Goods and Provisions in Worcester.

Yusefzadeh also plans to bring traffic to minority and women-owned dispensaries, when the product begins to be offered at dispensaries.

The extension of telehealth services and curbside pickups is a good move as it recognizes how important medical cannabis products are to the people who need them. These benefits can further be exploited by making use of the range of products, such as the remote IoT dose-measuring device, made by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) to help patients take precise doses of their plant medicine.

420 with CNW — Medical Marijuana Activists in Pennsylvania See Workers’ Comp. Decision as a Win

Thirty-six states in America have legalized cannabis for medical use, and an estimated 3.6 million individuals are registered as medical cannabis patients in the United States. However, federal law classifies cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance with no accepted medical use; cannabis is ranked right alongside hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Consequently, insurance companies refuse to cover individuals who use medical cannabis to treat work-related injuries. Instead, most of these patients have to pay for their medical cannabis out of pocket.

In Pennsylvania, however, a workers’ compensation judge made a historic and possibly precedent-setting ruling after declaring that an employee who was hurt while on the job and used medical marijuana to ease her pain deserved to be compensated by her former employer’s insurance provider. According to the plaintiff’s lawyer, Dana Kaufman from Kaufman Workers’ Compensation Law, this is the first time there has been such a ruling in Pennsylvania. Kaufman, whose firm operates out of Abington Township, has been trying to help her clients recover the costs they incurred after using cannabis to treat pain caused by workplace injuries. Until now, she has been unsuccessful.

Kaufman’s client, a home health aide, suffered serious injuries in a car accident that occurred as she drove from one client’s residence to another. After a car veered into her lane and hit her head on, her car flipped, and she was trapped inside, grievously injured, for 20 minutes. She suffered a trio of broken ribs as well as fractures to her legs, toes, and foot; she also sustained injuries to her hands and wrist. She was admitted to a trauma hospital for 10 days, and although she eventually recovered, she was left with nerve pain in one ankle and a leg that caused her immense pain and often woke her up at night.

Since she didn’t want to rely on opioids and other drugs that had side effects which made her unable to work effectively, she turned to a medical cannabis oil that she put into capsules and took daily. This reduced her pain enough for her to work two jobs as a daycare attendant and a home health aide for a cumulative 32 hours a week. Judge Rochelle Quiggle at the Pottsville, Pennsylvania, field office ruled that the plaintiff’s claims were more than reasonable and ordered her former boss’ insurance provider to pay her back around $4,000 and cover her medical marijuana costs ($400 a month) moving forward.

This is Kaufman’s first such win, and she says that she has several pending appeals at the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board and Commonwealth Court. Although it is now common knowledge that opioids have plenty of negative side effects, with even some insurance companies refusing to cover certain pharmaceutical pain relievers, those companies still won’t cover medical cannabis costs. She hopes that this ruling will change this trend and push more insurance providers to cover individuals using medical-grade cannabis to treat work-related injuries.

As more companies such as XPhyto Therapeutics Corp. (CSE: XPHY) (OTCQB: XPHYF) (FSE: 4XT) take their cannabis-based formulations through the clinical trial process, a time may come when insurers will cover cannabis medicines since they will have gone through the regulatory process.

420 with CNW — Canadian Firms Hope the US Eases Marijuana Restrictions

After decades of prohibition and intense policing, the American states are finally loosening restrictions against cannabis. So far, 36 states allow medical marijuana, 16 states have legalized recreational medical cannabis, and several more states are considering whether or not to pass cannabis legislation. The state-legal cannabis sector has been insanely profitable so far, earning billions of dollars in revenue and providing states with plenty of tax revenue, even amid the coronavirus pandemic, while other industries faltered.

Consequently, cannabis firms from the Great White North have been eyeing the U.S. market, waiting for the government to pass federal decriminalization laws before swooping in to for a piece of the cake. With President Joseph Biden in the White House and Capitol Hill currently in the Democrats’ control, there has never been a more ideal time for cannabis to come out from under the shackles of federal prohibition. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has held the Biden administration’s attention for nearly one and a half years, and with the 2022 midterms approaching, there is a risk the Democrats may lose their tenuous hold on Capitol Hill.

David Culver, vice president of global government relations for Canadian cannabis firm Canopy Growth Corp., says these legislative changes will need to happen soon before Biden’s potentially narrow legislative window closes. Although Biden has said he supports medical marijuana, decriminalizing cannabis, and updating the Department of Justice’s classification of cannabis to allow cannabis research, he doesn’t support recreational cannabis. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer supports legalizing adult-use cannabis, and he is currently working on a federal cannabis legalization bill with Senators Ron Wyden and Cory Booker.

At the moment, marijuana’s status as a Schedule I controlled substance makes it extremely difficult for even local cannabis companies to operate. But with the U.S. cannabis market projected to bring in $40 billion yearly, Canadian entities hope the United States eases restrictions, especially since the Canadian market hasn’t been as lucrative as anticipated.

In 2019, Canopy Growth had an acquisition deal with New York-based Acreage Holdings, which was amended last year and is contingent on a major “triggering event,”  referring to changes to U.S. federal cannabis laws. According to Canopy Growth CEO David Klein, the U.S. is going to be a core market for the Canadian company.

Aphria Inc. acquired Atlanta-based craft beer vendor SweetWater Brewing Co. last November, and CEO Irwin Simon also believes the U.S. will be a major source of revenue for the Canadian company. But while the coronavirus pandemic rages on, Culver says the government will likely focus its efforts on the pandemic and turn its attention to cannabis in the fall.

Needless to say, other companies that already have a firm foothold in Canada, such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF), would relish the opportunity to enter the U.S. market and make their mark there as well.

420 with CNW — California to Repair Drug War Ills Using Cannabis Taxes

Last week, the state of California revealed that it would be awarding roughly $29 million in grants funded by cannabis tax revenue to more than 50 not-for-profit organizations in an attempt to repair the harms of the drug war. The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development will be in charge of allocating the funds, which will be offered through the state’s Community Reinvestment Grants program.

The notice released by the state states that the grants to be awarded will serve communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs. It explains that the harsh state and federal drug policies approved from the start led to the separation of families, prohibitions on public housing, loss of educational attainments because of decreased federal financial aid eligibility, diminished access to social services and the mass incarceration of individuals of color.

The grants will be given to not-for-profit organizations that fit the eligibility criteria and support programs whose objectives are to offer legal services, substance misuse treatment, mental health treatment and job placement for disproportionately affected communities.

In a press release, the director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development Dee Dee Myers, said that the state’s Community Reinvestments Grants programs was a resource aimed at helping communities conquer the barriers and systemic restrictions to equity and opportunity. She added that the grants would also help advance economic justice, wellness and health for communities and populations that were affected by the drug war.

Applications for the grants had been made available to these communities late last year in an effort to promote economic justice and public health.

In addition to California, the state of Illinois is also utilizing cannabis tax revenue to finance programs to right the wrongs of the drug war. Earlier in January, its R3 (Restore, Reinvest and Renew) program awarded more than $30 million in marijuana-backed grants.

Concurrently, marijuana tax dollars in the state of Oregon are also being used to increase access to harm reduction and substance misuse treatment programs after a broad decriminalization measure — Measure 110 — was added to the ballot and received approval from voters last year.

The Oregon Health Authority had more than $1.5 million in funds allocated to supporting the administrative costs to be incurred in the implementation of the measure. Of the other funds to be allocated, more than $8 million will be used to finance proposals that closely align with the values and priorities of the decriminalization campaign, $6.4 million is to be directed into harm reduction and addiction recovery programs while another $2.9 million will be allocated to tribal groups.

This program illustrates how establishing a legal marijuana industry that allows companies such as Sonoma Biologics Corp. to operate can be beneficial by availing taxes that can be put to use to correct the wrongs of the past.
