420 with CNW – Colorado State University to Offer Degree in Marijuana

Colorado State University is launching a degree in marijuana after receiving state approval for the program on Friday.

Starting this fall, Colorado will be offering Cannabis, Biology, and Chemistry to undergraduate students wishing to study the science of the crop to ensure success in the industry, local media reported. The marijuana program is similar to a double major in biology and chemistry and features a lab permitted to cultivate industrial hemp to allow students to use cannabidiol derived from the plant during their study.

The program launch coincides with a time when the marijuana industry is booming, and more states are legalizing the drug; thus, increasing its accessibility across the nation.

Speaking to the media, the dean of College of Science and Mathematics, David Lehmpuhl, said that the degree is demanding, and it is geared towards increasing demand in the marijuana industry.

Lehmpuhl further said hemp and weed have succeeded in a lot of economic sectors across the country, and while the university is neither pro-marijuana nor anti-marijuana, their focus is about science, and educating their students to study marijuana science.

The program is about natural products, and the students would be studying the genetics of marijuana as well as other plants, which would be supplemented with other courses in neurobiology, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry. This includes finding out CBD levels in certain products.

Colorado State University’s announcement follows the announcement made by Colorado State University’s Fort Collins Campus about the construction of a new research center to study chemical compounds found in hemp. The research center will be opened in the College of Natural Sciences this spring.

Speaking to reporters, Lehmpuhl said that the U.S. needs trained scientists in the field of marijuana and hemp, especially after the 2019 vaping crisis.

Colorado adopted recreational marijuana early as it was among the first two states to legalize adult-use cannabis in 2012 through Amendment 64. Within the same year, Washington also legalized adult-use marijuana through a similar vote, Initiative 502.

In Colorado, people above the age of 21 were allowed to use recreational marijuana from 2014.

The state of Colorado earned more than $1 billion from marijuana in 2019, and the revenue is being used to fund public services. Since marijuana was legalized within the state, consumers have spent more than $6.5 billion, and there are no signs of reducing.

Oher universities offering marijuana courses include Northern Michigan University in Marquette, which is offering a four-year medicinal plant chemistry degree, organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, accounting, and financial management.

The demand for these program is anticipated to be high, and these announcements of the courses is most likely welcome news to sector players like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) who have always struggled to get well-trained employees.

420 with CNW – Poll Shows Most Kentuckians Support Legalizing Pot

Support for marijuana legalization has changed dramatically over the last few years, with more and more states legalizing either medical or recreational marijuana. However, some states are more conservative than others; for instance, in Kentucky, cannabis is not legal either for medical or adult-use purposes.

However, a recent survey by Kentucky Health Issues Poll (KHIP) in 2019 showed that in the last decade, support for marijuana legalization has been rising within the state. And it was the first time more than half of the residents of Kentucky who were surveyed said that they were in favor of marijuana for any use. The majority of the survey participants said that they in favor of medical marijuana, while a little less than half said that they were in favor of recreational marijuana.

Chubinski said that from KHIP 2012 and KHIP 2019, there is a notable shift in public opinion about marijuana reform in Kentucky. But, it is essential to note that during that timeframe, the policy landscape about marijuana has shifted as well.

According to the survey, nine out of 10 people said they are in favor of medical marijuana consumption, which is an increase from eight out of 10 people in 2012. Support for medical marijuana has increased from 38 percent in 2012 to 59 percent in 2019, while support for adult-use marijuana increased to 49 percent in 2019 from 26 percent in 2012.

In a statement, the vice president of research and evaluation Jennifer Chubinski said that support for marijuana legalization for any use or adult-use purposes was more likely to attract support from the Democrats more than the Republicans or Independents.

The University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research conducted the survey, and they used 1,559 adults residing in Kentucky. The poll which came shortly after the 2019 Health Policy Conference was sponsored by The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and Interact for Health. The focus of the conference was the impact that reforming marijuana laws has on the public.

Some of the topics that were raised during the conference that gathered prohibitionists and conservatives were the increased potency of marijuana plants. Other topics include how to measure the correct dosage, preventing young adults from using weed, impaired driving, and risks of accidental poisonings.  The poll results showed that there was a decrease in marijuana consumption among teens from 29% in 1997 to 16% in 2019. According to the survey, forty percent of Kentuckian adults have a friend or family who consumes marijuana regularly.

Although Kentucky officials are concerned over the common issues raised during the conference, other states in the U.S. are legalizing both medical and recreational marijuana, and it is clear that residents of Kentucky are ready to legalize marijuana.

It would be interesting to hear what sector players like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) have to say about the chances of full marijuana legalization happening in Kentucky this year.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) Closes Agreement to Acquire Significant Stake in Sacramento-Based Budcars Cannabis Delivery Service

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) today announced the closing of an agreement to acquire a significant stake in Sacramento-based Budcars Cannabis Delivery Service, owned by Indigo Dye Group Corp. According to the update, Sugarmade will acquire 40% of Budcars for $700,000 and will be granted an option to purchase an additional 30% stake, providing Sugarmade with a controlling interest in the growing delivery service, which serves the greater Sacramento, California metropolitan area.  “Many of us have seen the multitudes of negative news stories about problems in California’s regulated cannabis industry.  While there certainly are issues, there are also many positive changes happening as state regulators fine-tune the system,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan said in the news release.  “One of these positive changes is the ongoing crackdown on illegal black-market operators, who have made it difficult for licensed operators to make profits.  As illegal operators are driven out of the market, companies like Budcars will have meaningfully improved business fundamentals.  While this was an important consideration relative to our investment, we are also excited about many other aspects of the Budcars business and its future growth prospects.”

420 with CNW – Study Finds Business Innovation and Profits Go Up After Marijuana Legalization

New research shows that in the U.S., many states have been experimenting with different forms of marijuana legalization. The study found that businesses are thriving in states where marijuana is legal.

Researchers at the University of Iowa embarked on a study of the impact of legalization on the economy, and they analyzed 9,810 corporations between 1991 and 2017. The researchers found that after the legalization of medical marijuana, the states experienced a multitude of positive impacts.

The authors of the research said that firms whose headquarters are in a state where marijuana is legal were found to receive higher market valuations. The companies also earned higher and sometimes abnormal stock returns, employee productivity improved, and innovation also increased.

The study, which is yet to be published, shows that having marijuana laws helps unleash the untapped potential of employees as well as attract new talent for the companies.

The research authors also wrote that after marijuana was legalized, companies became more productive because they were able to hire more productive employees from other states.

The study also found that after medical marijuana laws were passed, companies earned a higher net income per employee, and this gain was consistent over the next two years.

The study reveals that the company value increased by 4.2%, which is equivalent to an average increase in the market value of corporations by $166 million, after the enactment of medical marijuana laws.

A positive shock to the human capital after legalization leads to an increase in profitability in firms based in states where marijuana is legal, according to the study authors.

The study found that the stock prices of companies located in jurisdictions where marijuana is legal fared better than those located in states where marijuana is illegal. Besides, firms in medical marijuana states experienced 4.56% increase in their stock value, whereas corporations in jurisdictions where there are no medical marijuana programs showed a loss of about 2% annually.

The research authors suggested that after marijuana laws are approved, companies innovate to ensure that they become more profitable in the wake of the new sector that is likely compete with them for employees and other resources, while their counterparts in regions where cannabis is illegal don’t have that added need to get creative.

The study concludes that not only do companies apply for more patents and receive citations on the said patents after marijuana legalization, but they are also more productive and efficient in generating innovation output from labor and research. There is also an increase in business startups and venture capital financing in jurisdictions that legalize cannabis.

The study also investigated the innovation and productivity of people working, living, and migrating to states where marijuana is legal. And, the authors found that the creativity of the scientists was enhanced after legalization. Compared to before the enactment of medical marijuana laws, the study found that more scientists moved to other states after the passage of medical marijuana legalization.

The study concluded that companies within states where marijuana is legal were able to attract more productive inventors and also saw an uptick in innovation among their employees as a result of the passage of enabling marijuana laws.

Industry watchers believe that not even the well-established marijuana companies like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) would have imagined that legalizing marijuana would have an all-round beneficial effect on profitability and productivity in sectors outside the cannabis industry, but this study proves that this is true.
