420 with CNW — Survey Finds One-Half of US Marijuana Consumers Would Choose Marijuana over Alcohol

The past couple of years have seen more than two dozen states pass some form of cannabis regulation, making marijuana more accessible to the public than ever. Customers are loving it — in just a few short years, consumers have purchased billions of dollars’ worth of legal cannabis. Based on the almost insane demand for cannabis, experts project that the industry will see significant growth in the future, achieving a valuation of $198 billion in 2028. Customers are especially attracted to cannabis due to its allegedly potent and versatile medical abilities.

Studies have found that cannabis can have therapeutic effects, including reducing pain, anxiety and depression. While the industry definitely needs more research into marijuana’s potential risks and benefits, there is plenty of proof that cannabis has positive attributes for health. This means that different people will consume cannabis for different reasons, be it to alleviate pain or induce sleep. According to a new survey, a growing number of cannabis consumers in the country prefer cannabis to alcohol.

Titled “Cannabis & Wellness: A New Consumer Paradigm,” the survey from New Frontiers Data looked at cannabis consumer trends and patterns of use. Although the most common reasons for using cannabis was, unsurprisingly, to relieve stress and relax, 23% of the respondents said they use the controversial plant to boost their overall wellness. Almost 80% of those who were surveyed said that using cannabis had a positive impact in their lives. Most importantly, one-half of the respondents said that they had began replacing alcohol consumption with cannabis.

Younger generations have been drinking less and less alcohol, so it’s not surprising that these younger consumers would turn to cannabis. Not only does the substance have zero of the side effects alcohol consumption induces, but it also has some therapeutic benefits. Players such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) in the cannabis industry have been quick to notice this, developing a range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic cannabis-infused drinks to meet market demand for an alternative to alcohol.

The coronavirus pandemic saw a spike in cannabis consumption as people struggled to cope with the stress of being locked inside for long periods of time and potentially contracting a deadly virus. Field Trip Health ran a survey of 2,015 Canadians this year and found that a majority were feeling lethargic and depressed during the pandemic.

An estimated 50% of the respondents said they had upped their cannabis consumption while 44% increased their alcohol consumption. The study also found that more than 70% of those surveyed had increased their screen time and another 70% were overeating to cope with the pandemic.

420 with CNW — Study Shows One in Three Programmers Use Cannabis

A new study has found that a considerable number of software programmers use cannabis while on the job, with most revealing that it boosted their creativity and got them into the zone. The study was conducted by University of Michigan researchers. They based their research on anecdotal evidence, which suggested that programmers were more likely to use marijuana while working.

The researchers carried out a survey to find out whether this was true, obtaining feedback from more than 800 developers, who explained how cannabis helped or impacted their work.

The researchers were primarily motivated by the fact that policies for drug testing were still common in the programming sector, which they proposed could contribute to hiring shortages for some jobs. In their survey summary, they explained that the prohibition of the use of marijuana in software engineering had contributed to a hiring shortage for some programming jobs in the U.S. government.

The researchers discovered that 35% of the participants had used marijuana when programming or finishing up on other tasks related to software engineering. More than 70% of those who had tried cannabis while working also revealed that they had  consumed cannabis in the last year.

Of the total number surveyed, 53% admitted to using marijuana while programming more than 10 times while 27% stated that they used the drug at least two times a week. Another 4% admitted that they used marijuana while on the job on a daily basis.

The researchers also asked the programmers why they chose to use cannabis, finding that most used the substance because it made tasks related to programming more enjoyable. Others admitted to using the herb to come up with more creative solutions.

The researchers also discovered that the most common tasks people performed when using cannabis were testing, coding, prototyping and brainstorming. In addition, the scientists found that about 30% of respondents used marijuana for reasons related to their general wellness, noting that while wellness did inspire the use of marijuana while programming, it wasn’t the biggest motivation.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered that even programmers who didn’t use the herb supported marijuana reform, with more than 90% of the participants maintaining that the use of cannabis should be legalized for medicinal and recreational use.

The group noted in its conclusion that the results had implications for drug policies for programming jobs and highlighted the need for more research into the use of marijuana while programming, as well as digging for a deeper science-based understanding of the marijuana products sold in state-legal dispensaries and produced by companies that operate legally, such as American Cannabis Partners. The survey’s findings were published in arXiv, Cornell University’s repository.

420 with CNW — Five Benefits of Cannabis, According to CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the chief medical correspondent for CNN, has been exploring the effects of smoking cannabis for a couple of years now. He believes that cannabis provides considerable medical benefits. His most recent report, which focused on the use of cannabis to help relieve pain and symptoms of various health conditions, discusses his thoughts on the matter.

During his quest to learn more about marijuana’s benefits, Gupta discovered a study conducted in Israel by a world renowned scientist, Raphael Mechoulam. The study centered on the use of cannabis as a treatment for refractory seizures in children. While additional studies are needed to learn more about the mechanisms behind how cannabis works, the researcher observed a reduction in seizures, especially in children who didn’t respond to existing seizure medication.

Mechoulam believes that major advances in the treatment and medical-scientific aspects of epilepsy with the help of cannabinoids such as CBD will soon be realized. This comes after the U.S. FDA approved an oral CBD solution known as Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures linked to Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which are both epilepsy syndromes. CBD has exhibited anti-epileptic actions and acts as an anticonvulsant as well as an antioxidant and neuroprotective. This means that even if an individual experiences a seizure, the compound offers protection against the electrical storm devastating the brain.

In his report, Gupta highlighted that some families had also turned to marijuana to help relieve the symptoms of autism, noting that the herb was an answer for many individuals. Research supports this, with findings from various studies showing that medical cannabis extracts appeared to manage the symptoms of kids suffering from autism.

Autism spectrum disorder, or autism in short, is a broad range of conditions characterized by repetitive behaviors and challenges with social skills. For instance, an Israeli clinical trial found that cannabis extracts improve the social responsiveness of children with autism and reduced their disruptive behavior.

Researchers advise that parents of children with autism wait for more data on the safety and effectiveness of cannabis in managing autism before they try treating their children with medical cannabis. This is because children treated with cannabis may sometimes suffer from disturbed sleep, sleepiness and reduced appetite.

Gupta also found that doctors in Israel had prescribed medical cannabis to more than 20,000 patients suffering from post-traumatic stress, epilepsy, cancer and degenerative ailments to help manage their symptoms. These findings make a strong case for the scientific community taking a closer look at what more the cannabis products manufactured by licensed companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) could offer in terms of possible benefits to the consumers.

420 with CNW — How to Choose Marijuana Packaging Suppliers

America’s state-legal cannabis industry is one of the youngest and fastest-growing industries in the country. In just a couple of years, players in the cannabis game have been able to generate billions of dollars in sales, and most experts project massive growth for cannabis. However, despite being extremely profitable, the marijuana and hemp sectors are wrought with pitfalls, including supply chain issues, long lead times and uneven regulations across state lines. To ensure that your packaging is compliant with packaging regulations and doesn’t eat into your profit margins, keep the following tips in mind when you contract packaging suppliers.

According to a variety of executives from cannabis companies in the United States, desirable qualities such as communication, transparency and quality should be your main focus. Brook Allman, the founder and head of product at Platinum Brands, says you need a packaging supplier who will meet deadlines on a consistent basis and warn you beforehand about potential delays. The last thing you want is to slow down or halt production since your packaging supplier didn’t inform you of incoming delays. Similarly, Jonathan Persofsky, the cofounder and CEO of Green Gruff,  advises players in the marijuana sector to find suppliers with accurate forecasting abilities to ensure they always have enough packaging on hand.

Reliability is essential, says the vice president of marketing at Theory Wellness, Thomas Winstanley. Can the suppliers deliver on their promises, including quality, price points or timelines? You will want a supplier that can always be counted on to keep their word.

For Chris Lane, the chief marketing officer at Airfield Supply Co., his goal is to source packaging suppliers who meet his company’s sustainability and recyclability values. With climate change and waste becoming more pressing by the day, sourcing sustainable and recyclable packaging will limit your products’ impact on the environment and attract customers who are on the lookout for ecofriendly products.

Experience is equally important, says Samip Shah, the chief operating officer at C3 Industries. A packaging supplier that has experience working with a variety of businesses in different industries will have solid problem-solving capabilities, he says.

Conversely, you should stay away from packaging suppliers that don’t put quality and timely delivery first, says Cortney Smith, CEO and founder of DaVinci. Another red flag you should keep an eye on is poor communication. Allie Marconi, the senior director of marketing at Copperstate Farms and Sol Flower, says suppliers that offer a swift response and a strategy for addressing your queries are best suited for your long-term goals.

Startups in the marijuana space would do well to borrow a leaf from companies such as Simply Sonoma Inc., which have fine-tuned their processes for selecting different vendors in order to deliver products with a high degree of consistency despite the shocks the global economy has faced in the recent past.

420 with CNW — NYC Officials Admit Safe-Consumption Sites Already Paying Off

The opioid pandemic has wreaked havoc across America for decades, taking hundreds of thousands of lives from 1999 and leaving millions of Americans with substance use disorder. The prevalence of pharmaceutical drugs as well as the increased accessibility of illicit drugs such as heroin has made it nearly impossible to effectively end the opioid crisis. And since addiction and drug use tends to have extremely negative stereotypes, addicts tend to shy away from seeking treatment.

For several lawmakers and drug reform groups, the first thing to do was reduce opioid deaths. From April 2020 to April 2021, America lost an estimated 100,000 people to opioid overdoses, significantly underscoring the need for immediate action. Ironically, one of the most controversial solutions to opioid deaths —safe-consumption sites — has proven to be quite effective at preventing individuals from succumbing to opioid overdoses. These sites are locations where people suffering from drug addiction can consumer illicit drugs under the supervision of trained medical professionals to prevent overdose deaths.

New York City was the first city in the country to launch an Overdose Prevention Center. According to the New York City Health Department, these harm-reduction centers have been used more than 2,000 times and prevented at least 59 overdose deaths so far. The initial results have been quite promising, Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi said in a press release, with the harm-reduction centers reducing “needless suffering and avoidable death.”

The simple, indisputable truth is that safe-consumption sites save lives, Chokshi says. For years, drug reform advocates have argued that such sites could be instrumental in helping America combat the opioid overdose epidemic and reduce the stigma associated with substance misuse disorders. Destigmatizing such disorders will make people a lot more comfortable with seeking treatment before it’s too late. Sam Rivera, the executive director of OnPoint NYC, which runs a safe consumption site, says the group is trying to humanize people who, in many cases, aren’t treated as human.

The New York City Board of Health recently approved a resolution that outlined the evidence showing just how effective a harm-reduction approach, rather than criminal justice, can be. The unanimously approved resolution also urged New York State and the federal government to provide authorization for harm-reduction centers as well as expand funding and support for the harm-reduction approach.

There may be some benefit to determining how this harm-reduction effort can benefit from cutting-edge devices such as the smart inhalers and dose-measuring devices commercialized by companies such as RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) since the technology has the capacity to regulate the dosage consumed.

420 with CNW — Study Looks to Reddit for Answers on Factors Fueling Cannabis Legalization

Researchers from Brown University recently conducted a study that examined posts on Reddit that could help explain what may have influenced the shift observed in the support for cannabis legalization by the public.

Babak Hemmatian, the researcher who led the study, used machine learning to conduct an analysis of more than 3 million comments made on Reddit in the period 2009–19, to understand the online conversations that drove individuals to support reform. The chosen period of study represents an important timeframe in the legalization movement at the state level.

The analysis revealed some unexpected trends, including the fact that individuals posting more character, judgment-based, generalized arguments was a clear prelude for state-level marijuana reform. This was observed around 2012 in particular as the first states ended marijuana prohibition.

In an interview, Hemmatian stated that his objective was to learn whether the way the public discussed cannabis facilitated the shift to bipartisan consensus in a few years and how the society’s attitude change influenced how people talked about marijuana.  The study also found that the legal implications for marijuana reform weren’t discussed in detail until after reforms had been passed in most states. This is in addition to discovering that discussions on marijuana’s health impacts only grew after legalization and mainly occurred in casual conversations.

In the report, the author of the study explained that both topics were pertinent to how and whether cannabis needed to be deregulated but were ignored in the decision-making process then addressed once the societal decision had been made. He further intimated that character judgments may have pushed individuals who weren’t opposed to legalization but hadn’t made up their minds over to the prolegalization side.

This isn’t the first time Reddit has been used to identify patterns and trends in marijuana consumption. In 2018, a study published in the “Drug and Alcohol Dependence” journal analyzed more than 2 million posts on the site, which led to various discoveries.

It seems researchers aren’t the only ones interested in investigating the intersection of social media and drug policy. Recently, the FDA revealed that it planned to use Reddit and other new sources of data to better understand public health issues surrounding the use of CBD and other cannabis derivatives, including THC. The agency also plans to develop a system to help find usage patterns and safety signals linked to emerging cannabis-derived products in real time. This includes THC, which the FDA warns consumers about, noting that the agency has yet to assess the substance’s effectiveness or safety.

The FDA warning notwithstanding, dozens of states have moved ahead to legalize the herb, and many companies, including Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS), are thriving in those established legal markets.

420 with CNW — Why Cannabis Firms Need to Focus on ESG Principles

Cannabis is one of the fastest-growing sectors in America. After only a couple of years of legal sales, cannabis firms across the country have generated billions of dollars in sales and created hundreds of thousands of new employment opportunities. The global cannabis industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 32.04% from 2021–28, reaching a valuation of $197.74 billion in 2028. As the market fills with competition, cannabis companies that want to stand out from the pack and attract investors will need to focus on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (“ESG”) principles.

ESG principles are environmental, social and corporate governance criteria that determine a company’s ethical impact and sustainability. A significant number of private investors look at waste and sustainability when they are considering whether or not they should invest in a company. According to an Association of Investment Companies study that surveyed private investors, 56% of respondents indicated they care a great deal about climate change. With global warming and climate change becoming more pressing by the day, it’s only natural that investors would want to invest in companies that have ethical practices and make sustainability a priority.

The survey revealed that 65% of private investors consider ESG issues when they finance companies. Investors who were younger than 45 were much more concerned with ESG principles (77%) than those 45 and older (61%).

Ideally, you should dedicate a great deal of your attention to ESG principles if you wish to attract private investors. For starters, you can conduct a materiality assessment to find how best your firm can interact with and engage with the neighboring community. This involves forming a team with diverse skills, identifying stakeholders that can affect your business and engaging with those stakeholders to identify their most pressing concerns.

After that, you will be in a better position to create an integrated ESG report that discloses potential risks pertaining to three key areas: environmental, social, and corporate governance. The report can be used to convince senior leadership to act on potential ESG deficiencies, identify opportunities for more efficient resource allocation and satisfy stakeholder needs.

Furthermore, creating an integrated ESG report and acting on it will enable your communications and marketing team to promote the company’s ESG success stories. Ultimately, cannabis companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), which focus on ESG principles, will significantly increase their chances of attracting private investors and succeeding in the cannabis space.
