420 with CNW — AOC Urges Biden to Exercise Executive Authority on Cannabis Policy

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“AOC”) is calling on President Joseph Biden to begin taking unilateral action on different progressive measures, including marijuana. Earlier last week, the congresswoman tweeted that the president needed to use his executive authority, which he’d been underutilizing thus far.

She explains that there was a lot the president, who has been in office for about a year now, could do regarding healthcare, immigration, student debt, climate and marijuana, among others. Ocasio-Cortez recently filed a bipartisan measure to incentivize state-level marijuana expungements.

The congresswoman was also one of the first legislators to suggest that the president use executive authority to advance cannabis reform, joining other colleagues who sent a letter to the president earlier this year. A report that was recently published by the Congressional Research Service asserts that the president has the power to grant mass pardons for marijuana offenses, adding that the administration can also proceed with legalizing marijuana federally without waiting for action from legislators.

A separate letter has also been sent to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from a pair of Republican legislators who criticized their continued silence and lack of action on cannabis reform and urged the administration to reschedule marijuana federally.

These are a few of the numerous legislators who have directly demanded reform from the president. Many, including advocates for reform, are disappointed by Biden, who has  declined to take any steps to change the country’s approach to marijuana despite campaigning on a prorescheduling and prodecriminalization platform.

Since the election, neither the president nor vice president have spoken about their marijuana campaign pledges. This despite many pleas from advocates and legislators to address the issue.

In November, a group of senators also sent a letter to the president urging him to utilize his executive authority to grant a mass pardon for individuals with nonviolent cannabis convictions. In a recent interview, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of these legislators, stated that by granting the relief, the president could promote racial equity and boost the country’s economy.

Correspondingly, a group of more than 150 academics, law enforcement professionals, politicians, athletes and celebrities also sent a letter to the president in September, which urged him to issue an unconditional and complete pardon to all individuals who had been federally convicted of nonviolent cannabis crimes.  This particular letter was sent at a time when the administration was encouraging individuals who had been placed on home confinement temporarily for federal drug offenses to fill out application forms for clemency.

The harms done by the criminal justice system with regard to marijuana is just one of the thorns in the flesh of the people most affected by the prohibitionist war, and the ripples are still being felt even in jurisdictions where legalization has taken place and firms such as American Cannabis Partners operate.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Announces Approval from Independent Review Board for DehydraTECH-CBD Human Clinical Study

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug-delivery platforms, has received Independent Review Board (“IRB”) approval for its planned DehydraTECH-CBD human hypertension study HYPER-H21-4; the approval was received earlier than anticipated. The study is designed to “de-risk” outcomes prior to the company’s planned entry into regulatory pathways for the use of DehydraTECH-CBD to treat hypertension and perhaps other forms of cardiovascular disease. The six-week study, which is entirely funded through the existing cash resources, is planned to include 60 volunteers, aged 45 to 70, using three 150 mg doses of DehydraTECH-CBD daily for the duration of the study. Dosing is anticipated to begin by April of next year. The study will incorporate a double-blinded, randomized, cross-over design, with a placebo control. The length of the study allows the company to evaluate the impact of DehydraTECH-CBD over time as well as the potential for longer-term health benefits. This study is the most comprehensive undertaken by Lexaria. “The hypertension market is valued at $28 billion per year and is expected to continue growing as one of the world’s top health problems and as a subset of the larger heart disease market,” the company stated in the press release. “Over 1.1 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension. Fewer than 1 person in 4 with hypertension have successfully controlled their blood pressure through medications, meaning the potential market for hypertension drugs is much larger than $28 billion per year if an affordable drug was available with few or no side effects. Lexaria believes that its DehydraTECH-CBD may introduce a more tolerable anti-hypertensive treatment option that may be used alone or in combination with other medications, to reduce BP with fewer discouraging and unwanted side effects.”

About Lexaria Bioscience Corp.

Lexaria Bioscience’s patented drug-delivery technology, DehydraTECH(TM), improves the way active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) enter the bloodstream by promoting more effective oral delivery. Since 2016, DehydraTECH has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to increase bioabsorption with cannabinoids and nicotine by 5 to 10 times — and in some instances by as much as 27 times — compared to standard industry formulations, as well as reduce time of onset from one to two hours to minutes and mask unwanted tastes. The delivery systems are also being evaluated for orally administered, anti-viral drugs; nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (“NSAIDs”); PDE5 inhibitors; and more. DehydraTECH has also evidenced an ability to deliver some drugs more effectively across the blood brain barrier. 420 with CNW — Common Myths About Marijuana Edibles That Have Been Debunked

As more states legalize cannabis for recreational and/or medical use, the popularity of cannabis edibles grows. People in legal states can now make their own homemade edible versions or purchase edibles from state-legal dispensaries. Unfortunately, some people are somewhat skeptical when it comes to consuming edibles, given the common myths spread about them.

While some myths perpetuate harmless but incorrect narratives about cannabis, others are harmful. Today, we’ll look at and debunk the most common myths about edibles.

Mangoes increase marijuana’s potency

If you are wondering how in the world someone could start a myth that consuming a mango alongside cannabis will make the potency of the marijuana shoot through the roof, here is your answer. It so happens that marijuana and mangoes both have a compound called myrcene. This terpenoid contributes to the smell as well as flavor of mangoes and marijuana.

However, that is as far as the similarities go. Cannabis potency is measured by how much THC is present in a given product, and the terpenoid myrcene in mangoes will not have any effect upon the potency of cannabis. If you find someone who swears that mangoes increase the strength of marijuana, ask them to read up on the placebo effect.

Raw cannabis can be used in edibles

Many people believe that all you need to do when making homemade edibles is to add raw cannabis into your cake or brownie mix. This is a mistake, because your cannabis needs to undergo a process that activates THC, known as decarboxylation. Raw marijuana that hasn’t undergone decarboxylation doesn’t induce the psychoactive effects sought by users, which means that adding raw marijuana to an edible recipe is wasteful, especially if your goal is to get high.

Consuming a lot of edibles is fatal

Edibles usually have a higher concentration of THC, which leaves most people who consume one concerned that they may have overdosed. While you may end up feeling the edible’s effects a bit more strongly, you shouldn’t worry that overindulging in edibles may result in a fatal overdose. This is because while edibles do contain high THC levels in comparison to the average joint, the level is still nowhere close to the amount that can cause a fatal cannabis overdose.

Edibles are best served as desserts

The popularity of marijuana-infused candies and marijuana brownies has perpetuated this fallacy, with the use of flavors such as chocolate and peanut butter in masking the taste of marijuana when making edibles only making the myth more believable.

This is not the case, however, as edibles can be eaten at any time of day and practically anywhere, as long as its legal. While edibles have been around for a while, cannabis drinks from companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) are also claiming an increasing share of the marijuana products market. This is a segment to watch for interested investors.

420 with CNW — Study Finds Smoking CBD-Rich Cannabis Doesn’t Impact Driving Ability

Over the past couple of years, cannabis has experienced a surge in popularity partly due to its purported medical abilities. As territories around the world started legalizing cannabis and hemp, reports of the controversial plant’s medical efficacy spread far and wide. Cannabidiol, one of the chemical compounds produced by plants in the cannabis family, has attracted most of this attention thanks to its potent medical properties. Unlike THC, the main psychoactive agent in marijuana, CBD does not intoxicate users or slow their mental and physical reactions.

A pilot study from Switzerland sought to find out whether there was a connection between smoking CBD-rich marijuana and reduced driving ability. The study found that there was “no significant impact” on the driving ability of its participants. Furthermore, there were no negative effects on vital signs, even though all the study participants had more THC in their blood than the legal limit allowed. This corroborates what we already know about CBD: it is not psychoactive, and it may reduce THC’s ability to intoxicate users.

The Swiss study comprised 33 participants who were each given a joint with 500 mg of tobacco and either 500 mg of placebo or 500 mg of CBD-rich cannabis. The placebo contained a cannabinoid-free, nicotine-free herbal mixture with a hemp aroma called Knaster Hemp while the CBD-rich marijuana contained 15.5% CBD and 0.9% THC.

After taking either the placebo or CBD-rich cannabis, the participants were taken through a variety of common DUI tests. Researchers concluded that there was no correlation between smoking CBD-rich cannabis flower and reduced driving ability, with study participants who smoked both CBD and the placebo experiencing zero decline in motor time, reaction time, concentration, performance or behavior under stress.

Some of the tests the researchers employed include psychological assessments such as reaction tests, a determination assessment that analyzed participants’ reactions under complex stimulus as well as a Cognitrone test. While there were no significant differences in reaction time after the participants smoked both CBD-rich cannabis and the placebo, there was a difference in reaction and motor time between the men and women regardless of whatever they consumed. However, there was no difference between the male and female participants in the determination test.

Researchers from the University of Bern’s Institute of Forensic Medicine say that although all study participants had enough THC in their blood to cause the symptoms of impairment, they did not exhibit any symptoms. They believe this is the first-ever study to investigate the potential ramifications of smoking cannabidiol-rich marijuana on road safety.

This study proves that consuming CBD-rich cannabis products from licensed marijuana companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) is unlikely to put drivers at risk, but caution is still required as a lot more isn’t yet fully understood about how various cannabis compounds affect one’s ability to drive safely.

420 with CNW — Weed 6: CNN Shines the Light on Medical Cannabis for Autistic Kids

Cannabis may still be one of the most controversial plants in America’s history, but awareness of its potential medical abilities is steadily increasing. First legalized for medical use by California in 1996, medical cannabis is now legal in 36 states and used to alleviate medical conditions such as chronic pain, cancer and cancer treatment symptoms, epilepsy, glaucoma and Alzheimer’s disease. Thanks to the plant’s potent medical properties, researchers all over the world are constantly running studies to discover the breadth of marijuana’s medical potential.

A pediatric clinical trial at UC-San Diego’s Center for Medical Cannabis Research has found that cannabidiol (“CBD”), one of the many chemical compounds produced by hemp and marijuana, has a positive effect against some of the more extreme symptoms of autism. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that usually results rigidity and repetitive behaviors as well as difficulty understanding nonverbal communication and social interaction. The disorder affects one in 44 children in America and can be accurately diagnosed by the time a child is two years old.

Autism exists on a spectrum, with some people exhibiting mild, easy-to-manage symptoms and others being completely nonverbal and, in some cases, aggressive and violent. It can also lead to self-harm and extremely disruptive behavior in extreme cases. According to Dr. Doris Trauner a distinguished professor of neurosciences and pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, “aggression and self-injurious behaviors” are common in children with severe autism. People with less severe autism may have trouble communicating in social settings, she told CNN chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, even if they are capable of speaking quite well.

For example, Ezra Fouquette started exhibiting unusual behavior when he was 17 months old, and he was diagnosed with autism disorder five months later. He soon became aggressive and violent, says Joan Fouquette, his mother. She didn’t want to put him on available pharmaceutical therapies because they can have side effects. This includes an increased risk of developing diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular-type issues. Instead, Fouquette tried a variety of unsuccessful homeopathic remedies and therapies until she heard about the CBD clinical trial at UC San Diego.

She enrolled Ezra into the double-blind placebo-controlled study when he was nine years old. Researchers gave CBD and a placebo to the participants at random and studied their brains to see how cannabidiol affected them. Ezra received both CBD and a placebo during the clinical trial, and after a few weeks, the once nonverbal young boy was singing. He’s not aggressive anymore, Fouquette says, and she can now communicate with him in a way she never could. A year after the study concluded, Ezra is still a happy and communicative young boy.

The study still hasn’t been published, however. Additionally, a lot more research is still needed before CBD is developed into a legal behavioral drug for autistic kids. Such additional research would greatly benefit from making use of advanced dose-measuring devices such as the internet-enabled smart inhalers manufactured by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) since it would help to standardize the dose administered to participants during clinical trials.

420 with CNW — Congressional Democrats Gear Up for Cannabis Reform Efforts

In a memo to the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, Reps. Barbara Lee and Earl Blumenauer wrote that the growing bipartisan momentum for marijuana reform show that Congress is ready for progress next year, noting that they were close to making its marijuana laws and policies align with the views of Americans.

This comes after several proposals were introduced, including federal initiatives that will expunge criminal records of cannabis offenders and establish banking services for the burgeoning marijuana industry.

A poll conducted by Gallup last year found that almost 70% of Americans, including about one-half of Republicans, support the legalization of cannabis. In 2020, the states of Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey and New Mexico legalized the recreational use of marijuana.

The memo is a guideline to various proposals that seek to redefine the role of the federal government in every facet of the marijuana industry. Some of these measures have even received support from the Republican party.

Bills such as the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (“MORE”) Act will remove marijuana from the Controlled Substance Act. Other measures will allow the establishment of a legal marijuana market in Washington D.C., provide for marijuana research trials for PTSD and prohibit retribution by the VA against clinicians who recommend the herb’s use.

Another important measure, the SAFE Banking Act, would afford the marijuana industry access to various financial services including credit-card processing, checking accounts and commercial loans. Under present law, financial institutions that provide banking services to licensed and legal marijuana businesses are under state laws yet subject to criminal prosecution under federal statutes, which include money laundering. This has led the marijuana industry in most states where the herb is legal to carry out their business in cash, which leaves them vulnerable to robberies, among other risks.

Other measures, such as the Medical Marijuana Research Act, would remove restrictions imposed on federal researchers studying cannabis and ensure that they have access to the same products used by consumers for their research.

Most of the pressure for cannabis reform is surprisingly bipartisan. Last week, Reps. Don Young and Dave Joyce wrote a letter to President Joseph Biden and VP Kamala Harris imploring them to change the severity with which marijuana is scheduled under the Controlled Substances Act in order to distinguish it from more dangerous drugs such as cocaine, morphine and fentanyl.

In the letter, Joyce stated that the restrictions imposed on cannabis as a Schedule I substance put the U.S. behind many scientific competitors as well as its international partners. If these efforts to reform cannabis policy at the federal level come to fruition, the entire industry, including sector players such as Simply Sonoma Inc., would have fewer regulatory complexities to navigate.

CannabisNewsBreaks – American Cannabis Partners Producing Differentiated, Niche-Market Product

American Cannabis Partners (“ACP”), a sustainable Jamaican experience canna-business innovator, has sought to capitalize on the global affinity for Jamaican cannabis as well as its close links to Jamaica. ACP is employing traditional Jamaican techniques within its cannabis cultivation, harvesting and curing processes. “The methods, in turn, have resulted in a far superior product for the company, as well as faster growth rates, greater production yields, higher THC levels and enhanced terpene bouquets,” explains a recent article. The U.S. cannabis market has the potential to reach an annual value of $115 billion by 2030, from sales of $17.5 billion in 2020, with product differentiation expected to increasingly drive the fortunes and pricing power of numerous players within the sector. “Cannabis plants habitually produce hundreds of aromatic terpenes, which have been shown to influence both a cannabis plant’s psychoactive properties as well as drive end-consumer demand. 420 with CNW — Federally Funded Survey Finds Significant Decline in Cannabis Use Among Youths

A new survey has found that the use of cannabis by youths reduced considerably this year. The Monitoring the Future survey was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It has been tracking adolescent attitudes towards drugs and drug behavior since 1975.

The self-reporting survey was taken by more than 32,000 students from 319 schools who completed it between February and June of this year. Its latest results show a significant decline in marijuana use among 8th, 10th and 12 graders in 2021. This is despite the fact that more laws to legalize marijuana are being enacted and implemented in various states across the country.

The survey’s findings show that in comparison to more than11% of 8th graders who reported that they used cannabis last year, only 7.1% did so this year. In 10th graders, this percentage dropped to 17.2% from the 28% recorded last year while in 12th graders, the number dropped to 30% this year, from the 35.3% recorded last year. This data offers evidence that supports the argument that legalizing cannabis for adults doesn’t lead to a rise in underage drug usage.

The survey, which was carried out by researchers at the University of Michigan, also found that the daily, 30-day and lifetime use of marijuana among adolescents also declined this year. A decline was also observed in the use of nicotine vaping, alcohol and other illicit drugs. However, the researchers note that the decline observed in past-year marijuana use is especially steep when compared to the consumption of all other illicit substances.

In a press release, National Institute on Drug Abuse director Nora Volkow stated that the agency had never observed such a huge decline in the use of drugs among teens in a one-year period, adding that the data highlighted an unforeseen consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, which caused tremendous shifts in the daily lives of adolescents. She noted that the agency was now focused on identifying the central elements of last year that contributed to the decline in drug usage in order to use it to inform future prevention efforts.

In a separate press release, the deputy director of NORML, Paul Armentano, stated that the survey’s findings added to scientific literature showing that cannabis regulation policies could be implemented in a manner that afforded grownups access while simultaneously limiting youth misuse and access. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (“NORML”) is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for the reform of cannabis laws for both recreational and medical use in the United States.

It is gratifying to find that states that have legalized the activities of licensed marijuana companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) are contributing to reducing the rates at which underage marijuana use takes place.

420 with CNW — Experts Include Hemp Among Fabric Options for Sensitive Skin

Hemp is one of the most versatile crops available. Outlawed for centuries because of its close relation to the ever-controversial marijuana, industrial hemp recently became legal when Congress passed the 2018 farm bill. The legislation allowed the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its derivatives as long as they contained less than 0.3% THC, the chemical in marijuana that makes users feel “high.” Since then, hemp has grown in popularity due to the alleged medical abilities of a chemical compound called CBD.

But while plenty of people know about CBD and its potential health benefits, not many are aware of the fact that hemp is an excellent fabric. Long before cannabis was outlawed and the drug war wreaked havoc across America, people were using fabric spun from hemp to make clothes, flags and even sails. Now that industrial hemp is no longer outlawed, hemp fabrics are making a comeback. With a lot of clothes on the market made of fabrics that are uncomfortable and irritate the skin, this couldn’t have come at a better time.

Generally, hemp is a lightweight, breathable durable fabric. Thanks to its high durability and absorbency, hemp can also make good towels though it isn’t as soft as high thread count cotton. Regardless, most experts agree that it is still superior to plenty of the synthetic fabrics on the market. Ajoy K Sarkar, a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, says natural fabrics such as hemp, cotton, cashmere, silk, linen and those made from wood pulp are the most skin friendly. As long as a fiber has good conductivity and wicking properties, which hemp does, it will be ideal for people with skin conditions.

Synthetic fibers such as acrylics, polyester, nylon and rayon, can have a negative effect on people with skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema. These fabrics tend to be hydrophobic and trap moisture that can irritate the skin, unlike hemp which has water-wicking properties. If you have a skin condition, you should keep an eye on the fabrics your clothes are made of to avoid exacerbating the condition. As Sakar says, natural fibers would be the better option.

You may want to avoid natural fibers such as wool during the winter because these fibers can also result in skin reactions and make atopic dermatitis worse, he says. Fortunately, you can wear breathable fabrics such as cotton or hemp underneath wool and other synthetic fibers to keep warm and comfortable during the winter.

Fortunately for people with skin issues, many companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) now make hemp textiles so access to high-quality fabrics is no longer limited.
