CannabisNewsBreaks – Hero Technologies Inc. (HENC) Leveraging Proprietary Tech for Significant Opportunity in Aeroponics Space

Hero Technologies (OTC: HENC), a cannabis company working toward a vertically integrated business model, executed an acquisition and operating agreement late last year. This resulted in the company acquiring a majority stake in BlackBox Systems and Technologies LLC, an aeroponics cannabis cultivation system that uses proprietary technology. According to a recent article, this strategic acquisition “has made the company a clear contender in the cannabis aeroponics cultivation space.” Aeroponics is a method of growing plants in an environment with no soil. It is highly efficient, offering increased survival rates and a faster grow cycle than soil-based facilities. “HENC’s exclusive aeroponics technology, called BlackBox XL Systems and Grow module, provides optimal conditions to enhance photosynthesis and cultivation of large flowering plants, creating increased efficiencies. The company sees the aeroponics space combined with its proprietary technology as a significant opportunity with impressive potential.”

420 with CNW — Congress Gears Up to Consider Spending Bills Touching on Marijuana, CBD and Hemp

Just a day after the House Appropriations Committee released a report urging federal agencies to reconsider firing employees for past cannabis use, several cannabis and hemp-related spending bills have advanced in Congress. As the 2022 midterms approach, Democrats have limited time to advance cannabis legislation before the Republican Party challenges their tenuous hold on Congress. If these bills are successful, they could have far-reaching effects on the cannabis and hemp industries.

For starters, the House Appropriations Committee approved a bill with an attached report acknowledging clarification from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”) that veterans who work in the state-legal cannabis industry are eligible for home loan benefits. The report notes that despite its acknowledgment, VA still hasn’t communicated this policy to borrowers and lenders. As such, the VA is to facilitate that communication and report back to Congress within 180 days of the legislation’s enactment.

Also, a spending bill that will provide the Department of Homeland Security’s funding for fiscal year 2022 includes a provision that prevents component agencies from using past cannabis use of low-level offenses as a pretext for denying immigration benefits or protections. The bill also protects them from being penalized in an application.

A standalone bill has been introduced this session to prevent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The bill, which considers anyone who has consumed even state-legal cannabis as “morally unfit” for citizenship and denies qualifying individuals citizenship based on past cannabis use, has not been acted on yet.

Another spending bill for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (“USDA”) the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) cover hemps and its derivatives such as CBD. Lawmakers argue that the 0.3% THC cap for legal hemp products, which was introduced by the 2018 Farm Bill, is arbitrary and may not be supported by science. The report directs the USDA to work with the Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) to study whether there is any credible scientific basis to the THC cap.

Additionally, lawmakers pointed out that language that forbids individuals with felony drug convictions from taking part in the hemp industry for 10 years after being released may act as a barrier to entry for communities that were disproportionately affected by the war on drugs. Consequently, the USDA is to analyze these and other barriers that keep impacted communities from joining the industry and report recommendations on how to make sure the sector is equitable.

If this growing awareness by Congress of the need to make cannabis reforms galvanizes into the enactment of enabling federal laws, it has potential to greatly reduce the contradictions that companies such as Sonoma Biologics Corp. have to navigate as they try to adhere to both federal and state marijuana laws.

420 with CNW — Study Finds That Marijuana Possesses Strain-Specific Effect on Driving Performance

recent study has found that drivers who consume marijuana may not perform or feel impaired. The study found that, instead, drivers who used marijuana would sometimes experience a positive effect on their driving.

This comes at a time when policy makers are working to decide whether driving while under the influence of marijuana warrants similar penalties to driving while under the influence of alcohol in various states across the country. Under the law, impairment is defined as a state of diminished or weakened function.

In many states, the legal limit for blood–alcohol content is 0.08. It is known that a driver who has been awake for more than 20 hours drives with the same impairment level as an individual with the aforementioned blood-alcohol content. However, the stance on marijuana impairment keeps shifting because while it is known that the plant does cause impairment, establishing an acceptable limit seems to be a challenge.

The fact that marijuana metabolites also remain in the human saliva or blood long after the plant’s effects have worn off is also a challenge as it makes it harder for cannabis breathalyzer tests to conclusively measure the impairment level of a driver who’s been using cannabis.

Despite this, some states, including Colorado, have still imposed limits on the level of THC metabolites that can be found in a driver’s blood.

The study, which was conducted by University of Iowa researchers, found that marijuana compounds that give rise to other effects, apart from being high, could probably help individuals drive a bit better. The study, which was reported in the “Traffic Injury Prevention” journal, involved 10 drivers who were each evaluated on their road abilities two hours after they had  consumed marijuana.

Each driver was asked to rate their perceived level of impairment before they performed some simulated tasks. Prior research had discovered that drivers who were stoned took fewer risks and were more aware of their impairment when compared to drivers who were inebriated and took more risks.

The authors of the study explained that with regard to longitudinal and lateral control, a growing perception of stimulation gave rise to a positive effect on the drivers’ performance. They added that the study results offered a better understanding of how various strains of marijuana, which gave rise to different experiences for users, could affect driving safety.

The researchers also noted that drug effects that produced more high or stoned feelings resulted in a greater negative impact on driving while those that caused more stimulation had a lesser effect on driving. This isn’t to mean that driving after consuming marijuana is safe, it just means that the level of impairment may not be as pronounced, depending on the marijuana strain consumed.

This study highlights why companies such as XPhyto Therapeutics Corp. (CSE: XPHY) (OTCQB: XPHYF) (FSE: 4XT) have invested immensely in studying the specific effects of various cannabinoids so that they can develop therapeutic formulations to treat a variety of conditions.

420 with CNW — Five Science-Based Benefits of Cannabidiol

Cannabis and cannabis extracts are becoming more popular as more states across the country legalize the plant for recreational and/or medical use. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound that is extracted from the cannabis sativa plant. The compound can be consumed through edible consumption or smoke inhalation, in addition to being applied topically. It interacts with neuro-receptors in an individual’s endocannabinoid system, which send signals between the body’s cells to help regulate the immune system, homeostasis, mood and movement.

Cannabidiol is usually extracted in oil form and has recently become popular because of its calming effects. Below are a few ways CBD oil can benefit health and wellness, as suggested by preliminary research on the compound.

Protect against neurological ailments

Clinical and preclinical studies have found that CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that could offer considerable protection against various pathological disorders. Some preclinical studies also propose that the compound produces beneficial effects against multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’ disease.

Alleviate pain

Studies conducted in the United States indicate that CBD is efficacious in treating chronic pain when administered topically. Research results from a 2020 study show that the use of topical CBD in managing pain in patients with symptomatic peripheral neuropathy resulted in considerable reductions in intense sharp pains.

Reduce symptoms of ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (“ALS”) is an ailment that causes nerve cells in an individual’s spinal cord and brain to deteriorate, which brings about loss in muscle control. The disease has no cure, and only two medications exist that are approved by the FDA for the management of this condition. A 2019 study suggests that ALS patients can benefit from a combined CBD and THC treatment, with patients who suffered from mild-to-severe muscle stiffness and tightness reporting high levels of satisfaction.

Decrease symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder

A 2018 study that involved 11 individuals who all suffer from PTSD found that the use of CBD in conjunction with psychiatric care decreased the patients’ symptoms. Other studies on the same topic have found that CBD used together with THC enhances the former’s effects in reducing symptoms of PTSD.

Neutralize anxiety

Numerous studies on the use of cannabis and its extracts in helping combat anxiety have been conducted in the recent past. A study conducted in 2017 found that CBD was effective in reducing anxiety when used in moderate doses.

The above are only a few of the ways in which CBD can be provide health benefits. Researchers are focused on finding out more about this compound and any additional benefits that it may possess.

Many companies such as The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER) are marketing a variety of CBD-infused products. It is good to learn that scientific studies are revealing some of the benefits that consumers could derive from using these widely available products.

420 with CNW — Supreme Court Justice Slams Federal Cannabis Policy as Unstable, Contradictory

Until a decade or so ago, America’s policy on cannabis had been outright prohibition. Marijuana was illegal to grow, produce or sell in nearly every state, and individuals who participated in any of these activities were subject to intense policing and harsh sentencing. Now more than 30 states allow some form of cannabis, and the industry has employed hundreds of thousands and provided states with millions of dollars in tax revenue.

However, federal law still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance, similar to hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Additionally, most states have different cannabis regulations, and what is allowed in one state may be illegal in another. Consequently, this has led to a mismatch between federal law and a patchwork of state law, with state-legal businesses being forced to navigate an extremely tricky legal environment.

This week a conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice slammed America’s federal policy on cannabis, calling it unstable and contradictory and suggesting that outright federal prohibition of the controversial drug may even be unconstitutional. Justice Clarence Thomas specifically talked about the 2005 Gonzales v. Raich ruling, which determined that since the federal government had the authority to regulate interstate commerce, it could enforce prohibition policies against cannabis cultivation in California.

However, he says, federal policies have undermined this ruling in the 16 years since it was passed. The federal government’s approach to cannabis has since been a “half-in, half-out regime,” he says, with the federal government seeming to both allow and forbid local cannabis use. Not only does this strain the credibility of federal law, but it also hides traps for unwary cannabis businesses that might think they are acting lawfully based on the federal government’s previous actions, only to find themselves facing repercussions.

Since the Gonzales v. Raich ruling, the government has sent mixed signals regarding cannabis. For instance, a spending bill rider that has been approved repeatedly forbids the Justice Department from using its funds to interfere with state-legal medical marijuana programs. Additionally, Obama-era memorandums by the Justice Department state that the government would “tolerate” certain cannabis-related activities as long as they are lawful in the state in which they occur. Federal prosecutors were also instructed not to pursue low-level cannabis offenders, contrary to federal law.

Thus, he says, these actions may lead the ordinary person to believe that the federal government has reversed its prohibitionist policies when it hasn’t. The mismatch between federal and state law has also prevented cannabis businesses from accessing financial services, despite being legal entities that pay tax. Most of them are forced to operate on a cash-only basis, which puts them at risk of burglaries and robberies. In conclusion, Thomas said that outright prohibition may no longer be a proper approach.

The comments of the Justice of the Supreme Court give a voice to what the entire cannabis sector, including companies such as Grapefruit USA Inc. (OTCQB: GPFT), feel about the contradictions between federal and state marijuana policies.

420 with CNW — Fibromyalgia Patients Ditching Opioids for CBD to Manage Pain

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that presents as musculoskeletal pain accompanied by mood, memory, sleep and fatigue issues. This disorder has no cure, and while there are drugs that can help manage its symptoms, most don’t do the job perfectly. However, a new study conducted by researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan has found that patients with fibromyalgia may benefit from the use of products that contain CBD to manage pain.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid that is extracted from the marijuana plant that doesn’t induce the intoxicating effects of THC. This cannabinoid has been marketed for different uses, ranging from pain relief to mood stabilization. THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is another cannabinoid that is also extracted from the marijuana plant. It causes individuals to feel high.

The legalization of recreational and medical cannabis in different states across the United States and the removal of CBD derived from hemp from its Schedule 1 classification have boosted the marijuana industry’s growth tremendously.

Prior studies have demonstrated that some individuals substitute medical marijuana, which has high THC concentration, for pain medications such as opioids, with many reporting that the former induces fewer side effects and offers better pain relief. However, studies on the use of CBD for the same indications is still limited at best.

This is why researchers from the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center conducted their research, with Kevin Boehnke, a member of the research team, noting that CBD was less harmful in comparison with THC and presented a beneficial harm reduction strategy. The researchers conducted a survey with more than 800 individuals who suffer from fibromyalgia and claimed to use CBD to manage chronic pain.

In the study, the research investigators explained that the disease wasn’t easy to treat and involved different medications that provide modest benefits and many side effects, noting that alternative therapies such as massages and acupuncture weren’t covered by insurance, which made those options less accessible to most individuals. The researchers discovered that more than 70% of the individuals who used CBD had substituted it for other pain medications, including opioids. Of this number, the majority reported that they had either stopped taking or reduced their use of opioids due to the use of CBD.

The researchers note that for most of the patients, the use of CBD was taking place without the guidance of a physician, adding that despite the lack of evidence, individuals who were using the cannabinoid as a substitute for other pain medications had found it to be more efficacious and less harmful.

As devices like the RYAH Smart Inhaler made by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) become increasingly available, patients who use cannabis for pain and other symptoms will find it easier to monitor and record the doses of marijuana they need for symptom relief.

420 with CNW — Congressional Committee Authors Report Urging Feds to Rethink Firing Employees Who Use Marijuana

Although federal law still classifies cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance, more than 30 states have legalized it for either medical or recreational use. This classification has been a constant thorn in the industry’s side, preventing businesses in the cannabis space from accessing crucial banking and financial services. Cannabis consumers have also been caught in the middle, with many of them being penalized by the federal government for actions that are considered legal in their home states.

As such, a powerful Congressional committee has released a report urging federal agencies to reconsider firing employees for using state-legal marijuana. Alongside the report, the annual Financial Services and General Government (“FSGG”) spending bill approved by the House Appropriations Committee also includes a provision that would provide protections for banks that work with state-licensed cannabis businesses.

The committee stated its support for a recent memo sent to federal agencies by the Office of Personnel Management (“OPM”), saying in the report that admission of last cannabis use should not automatically disqualify people from employment. Additionally, a longstanding rider that blocks Washington DC from allowing cannabis sales was conspicuously absent from the spending legislation.

The report, which was attached to the FSGG spending bill, states that the committee supports the updated guidance by the OPM regarding whether past marijuana use affects an individual’s fitness or suitability for a federal position. The report also urged the federal government to reconsider and reevaluate policies that penalize workers for consuming cannabis products when they are legally allowed to do so in their home states. The report concluded that the employment policies should be updated to reflect changes to the laws regarding cannabis usage and how using state-legal cannabis can impact federal employment.

Although the House Appropriations Committee hasn’t made an explicit endorsement for loosening employment restrictions on cannabis use, it is asking the federal government to stop punishing employees for the inconsistencies between state and federal law. Reevaluating strict policies that penalize employees or applicants who admit to consuming cannabis in legal states to make them more lenient would be the first step.

Employees have been the most affected by the differing cannabis policies on the state and federal level, especially those working for federal agencies required to abide by federal law. Just a few months ago, stories emerged about how staffers in the Biden administration who had admitted to past cannabis use were being penalized in some form or other. Although press secretary Jeb Psaki said that no White House staffers had been fired for prior marijuana use, she hasn’t commented on whether they were suspended or placed in remote work programs.

When Congressional committees start voicing their concerns about the contradictions between federal and state marijuana laws, it goes a long way towards helping the cannabis industry, including companies working in the space, such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC), to send a stronger message that some degree of uniformity needs to be established in the way marijuana is regarded across the country.
