In its FY2021 financial report, which includes numbers for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, the company reported revenue of $46 million, which represents a 20% growth over fiscal year 2020. In addition to record revenue, the company reported CAGR of 52% since fiscal 2015; cost of goods sold reaching approximately $29.6 million; and gross profit showing a 25% increase over FY2020, totaling an estimated $16.4 million. Company highlights in the report included Alkaline88 water now being sold in more than 75,000 stores across the country; direct store delivery partnerships with Mahaska, Nevada Beverage Company and Hensley Beverage Company, which serve a combined 16,000 clients in five states; and expansion into the multibillion-dollar hospitality and food-service channel. Company president and CEO Richard A. Wright and chief financial officers David Guarino hosted a live conference call to discuss the report on July 6, 2021, at 8:30 a.m. A replay of the call will be available for one week, starting on July 7, 2021. Wright in the press release. “Our employees and business partners rose to the occasion throughout last year, and we have seen significant sales acceleration into fiscal 2022. We delivered to our customers and consumers when they needed us most. The trust and appreciation we earned from our strong performance throughout the pandemic allowed us to continue to see more organic and new-store growth, and an expanding presence in more key channels. Our guidance for the full fiscal year 2022 is $62 million, which would represent year-over-year growth of 35%.”

In addition, WTER announced that it had closed a nonbrokered private placement. The placement, comprised of 4,757,381 subscription receipts, priced at $1.05 per share, resulted in $4,995,250.05 in gross proceeds for The Alkaline Water Company. The company noted that it intends to use the proceeds for general working capital and expanding production capacity. Involved in the private placement were WTER chair Aaron Keay and Shaquille O’Neal, former NBA superstar and now well-known sport and business figure; both Keay and O’Neal invested $1,050,000, representing more than 40% of the entire financing. “Alkaline88 continues to be one of the most prominent growing premium functional waters in the category,” said The Alkaline Water Company chair Aaron Keay. “Having just reported another record year, the company could not be better positioned for aggressive growth throughout fiscal 2022 in multiple different sales channels. Leading this financing alongside Shaquille is not only an honor but an aligned testament to both our beliefs that Alkaline88 is becoming a household name for premium waters and a go-to brand across America.”

420 with CNW — Stuff You Should Know About Legal Cannabis in Michigan

In 2018, the state of Michigan became the first state in the Midwest to legalize recreational cannabis. The legislation, which went into effect in December of the same year, is known as the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act.

This move came a decade after voters in the state approved the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program. The program, which operates as a division in the state’s cannabis regulatory agency, is governed by different legislation and is detached from the agency’s medical and adult-use cannabis licensing division.

While this isn’t a prescription, the law requires that only a physician of osteopathic medicine and surgery or a medical doctor who has a current practice license in the state can sign the physician certification for a patient to qualify for the program. Additionally, the law governing the state’s medical cannabis program lists medical conditions that are eligible for the use of medical cannabis. The National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine has found that the plant is beneficial in treating and reducing nausea and pain as well as other symptoms linked to various debilitating medical conditions.

The main differences between recreational and medical marijuana can be observed in the amount and taxes paid, as taxes for recreational cannabis are higher. Either way, if users are planning to or are using either recreational or medical cannabis, there are a few things to keep in mind with regard to state law.

The law states that individuals aged 21 and above are allowed to process, store and possess no more than 10 ounces of cannabis and should not grow more than 12 cannabis plants for personal use. This is in addition to stipulating that individuals aged 21 and above are allowed to process, transport, purchase, consume, use and/or possess no more than 15 grams of cannabis concentrate and 2.5 cannabis flower ounces.

Additionally, drivers are not allowed to have more than 15 grams of cannabis concentrate or 2.5 cannabis ounces on their person. Drivers are also not allowed to consume cannabis while operating any motor vehicle and are also barred, along with their passengers, from smoking cannabis in the passenger area of a vehicle. In addition to this, passengers and drivers cannot transport cannabis into Canada.

The penalties for operating under the influence of cannabis are similar to those of operating under the influence of alcohol. Penalties include six points on an individual’s driving record, a license suspension, a $500 fine and three months in jail, among others.

It appears that the regulations established in Michigan aren’t such a big hindrance to the sector. This is because many companies, including Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), have established themselves in this market and are thriving.

420 with CNW — UN Calls for Worldwide Ban on Cannabis Advertising

Every year, the United Nations’ (“UN”) drug division releases a drug report, offering policy recommendations regarding drug and drug use for its member nations. The 2021 World Drug Report, released by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (“UNODC”), has urged a global ban on cannabis advertising, promoting and sponsoring. According to the report, as more territories have legalized marijuana and THC potency has continually increased, the perception of the drug’s risks has reduced, especially among the youth.

A comprehensive ban on all forms of marijuana advertising is in the best interest of public health, the report states, and a ban would ensure that business interests follow guidelines to protect public health interests. Although such a proclamation would seem like a major blow to the young but swiftly growing cannabis industry, pundits say it is tacit recognition of the inevitability of legal cannabis by the prohibitionist body. Before the 2021 report, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime’s standard policy on cannabis was that it should be prohibited, not regulated.

By giving its member nations tips on how to regulate the industry, which is one of the fastest-growing sectors in America, the UN is unofficially recognizing the popularity of cannabis reform and preparing for a future where legal cannabis markets will be the norm rather than the exception. As such, some players in the cannabis market feel that the UN’s recommendation to ban cannabis advertising is a positive development. According to UNODC, this ban would have to apply across “all jurisdictions,” and member nations would need to invest more in cannabis research.

Specifically, these funds would be used to research the negative effects of recreational cannabis use as well as the various medical conditions that are said to be treatable by cannabis. However, since the UN doesn’t have the authority to enforce a ban on cannabis advertising, the report’s recommendation is one that member nations are free to take up or ignore. The report compares such a ban to the provisions placed on tobacco by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Steve Rolies, a senior policy analyst at Transforma Drug Policy Foundation, says the UN’s recommendation is an acknowledgement of the fact that cannabis legalization is inevitable. Comparing it to the ban on tobacco advertising shows that, although the division may not approve of the industry, it has accepted that there is no stopping the forward momentum and has decided to protect vulnerable individuals, especially the youth, from cannabis promotion.

Cannabis sector players from different jurisdictions, including  Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) (OTCQB: PACRF) (FSE: 4XM), are already operating under tight regulatory frameworks.

CannabisNewsBreaks – BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE:7BC) in Strong Position to Build TRACE Brand

BevCanna Enterprises (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC), a diversified health and wellness beverage and natural products company, is staking target of the burgeoning alkaline water market with its TRACE line of products, which include natural spring alkaline water and plant-based mineral water. “What is not up for debate is the very real category growth of alkaline water,” reads a recent article. “Alkaline water is an emerging category that has caught consumer attention in the last decade, growing from a $325 million market in 2013 to $631 million in 2017, on a path to contribute billions to the broader global bottled water market. Two brands, Core and Essentia, were clear drivers in 44% annual growth in North America from 2013-2018. The burgeoning market is highly fragmented outside of Core and Essentia, putting BevCanna in a strong position to build its TRACE brand. TRACE already enjoys a leadership position within the alkaline and plant-based fulvic and humic mineral category being sold in more than 3,000 Canadian retailers.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) (OTCQB: PACRF) (FSE: 4XM) Raising Quality Bar with Focus on Cutting-Edge Techniques

Pac Roots (CSE: PACR) (OTCQB: PACRF) (FSE: 4XM) has sought to address the poor reputation of legal Canadian marijuana through a relentless focus on cutting-edge cultivation techniques, thereby raising the quality bar. This distinction sets the company apart as, despite recreational marijuana being legalized across Canada in October of 2018, legal recreational sales have been slow to take off. “A Canadian government survey released in February 2021 found that 40% of country’s marijuana consumers admitted to having obtained the drug illegally since legalization – largely a result of the poor quality inherent to legal produce as well as a distinct lack of retail store locations,” reads a recent article. According to its website, Pac Roots Cannabis is intent on preserving the excellence of its elite strains and is passionate about introducing the highest quality of strains to the public. “With Canada’s legalized marijuana market finally on an upswing, Pac Root Cannabis Corp.’s relentless focus on high-quality cultivars and marijuana products may place it in the ideal position to benefit from rising demand from an increasingly discerning Canadian retail consumer base.”

420 with CNW — How Marijuana Drinks Are Finally Coming to Maturity

When the first cannabis drinks hit the market a few years ago, they weren’t the smooth, high-quality beverages we see today. The cannabis industry itself was still in its infancy, cannabis technology was sorely lacking, and the results from these first attempts at infusing cannabis into beverages were not elegant. For instance, Lyden Henderson’s first run-in with a nonalcoholic, marijuana-infused beer last year left him with a bad taste in the mouth, literally.

It was chunky, he says, with soggy bits of marijuana floating throughout the beverage, creating what he refers to as “unpleasant consistency.” The texture was terrible as well, and he compares the taste to drinking milk that had been lying in a refrigerator for a couple of months. All in all, he recalls, it was the “most gross” drink he had ever had the misfortune of tasting in his life.

An entrepreneur at heart, however, Henderson saw the ordeal as a learning experience and vowed to create a much more superior cannabis beverage. For more than a year and a half, he and his workmates at Outbound Brewing, a nonalcoholic CBD and THC-infused beer firm he co-founded back in 2018, worked on developing a cannabis-infused beverage that was neither lumpy nor chunky. The company finally launched the line of cannabis beverages this year, with each 12 oz. bottle containing a smooth beverage infused with either 20 mg. of CBD or 10 mg. of THC.

Why was it so hard to infuse cannabis effectively into beverages until recently? Well, cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, which are responsible for marijuana’s effects, are naturally fat soluble. This means that while they will readily mix with fats and oils, they do not mix easily with water. Tinctures, which are a liquid product, use an alcohol base, but since it is illegal to mix cannabis and alcohol, this technique cannot be transferred to cannabis beverages.

Edibles, which have recently been seeing increasing sales, take advantage of cannabinoids’ fat solubility by mixing them with oils and fatty butters. Again, this cannot be used to make cannabis-infused beverages. But as the industry has matured, cannabis beverage companies have perfected a procedure referred to as nano-emulsification. Here, marijuana oil is broken into microscopic particles and mixed into an emulsifier that has two parts: one that bonds with oil and another that binds with water. Thus, one end of the emulsifier takes the cannabis oil while the other binds with water, suspending the cannabis in water and producing a very consistent product.

Jake Bullock, co-founder of THC- and CBD-infused sparkling water maker Cann, works with SōRSE Technology, a Seattle-based lab, to perfect the emulsification process without impacting the taste. The result was a beverage that doesn’t taste like cannabis at all, has the consistency of seltzer and has a standardized amount of cannabis in each can.

With companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) taking the role of manufacturing cannabis drinks to a whole new level, the bad taste experienced by Henderson years back is a thing of the past.

420 with CNW — State Cannabis Regulators Discuss Effects of Legalization with Members of Congress

Last week, a group of state cannabis regulators met with members of Congress and federal officials to discuss the possible effects that national legalization of the plant and other changes in marijuana policy could have on the programs they manage.

The meeting was organized by the Cannabis Regulators Association. The coalition is made up of members whose states have put an end to marijuana prohibition and would be impacted by any federal cannabis actions.

In attendance were the co-chairs of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus Reps. Dave Joyce and Earl Blumenauer, who spoke with staffers from various congressional offices as well as the state regulators. Representatives from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute on Drug Abuse were also in attendance.

In an interview, the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency’s executive director Andrew Brisbo stated that federal officials were open-minded during the discussion, adding that their main objective for the meeting was to highlight how important it was that state regulators have a position to share their perspectives.

Brisbo also observed that promoting economic and social equity, product testing and labeling were among the issues that they discussed during the meeting. In addition, they also talked about laws to protect banks that cater to state-legal cannabis businesses from incurring penalties from federal regulators. Regulators from the states of Utah, Oregon, Nevada, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Illinois, Hawaii, Colorado and California among others also took part in the discussion.

In addition to this, Brisbo stated that they also wanted to make sure that there was consideration for already existing frameworks when federal policies were enacted. He also explained that while some initiatives honored the people’s will and established structures that functioned on the state level, it was important to make sure that the progress made by different states wasn’t overrun by federal policies.

Earlier in the year, the regulators association had penned a letter to congressional leaders who had provided assistance and outlined marijuana policy priorities as legislators consider various reform initiatives that may be advanced during this session.

The priorities included supporting public health initiatives, making certain that there was economic and social equity in legal markets, advancing research on cannabis, offering banking access to state-legal marijuana businesses, and offering protection to states that have legalized cannabis in some form.

At present, the sponsors of a Senate legislation to offer marijuana banking protections are calling for the chairman to put the measure to a vote in Congress.

If such meetings are anything to go by, the entire cannabis industry, including Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), could soon be looking at enabling laws at the federal level that address many of the existing regulatory contradictions.
