420 with CNW — AI Could Help Despite Shortage of Cannabis Data

Even though cannabis has been legal for either medical or recreational use in several states for years now, its status as a classified drug at the federal level has been a constant thorn in the state-legal cannabis industry’s side. Not only has this made navigating the business and financial world extremely challenging for cannabis businesses, but it has made any sort of research into cannabis nearly impossible.

With the young cannabis sector growing bigger every year, the lack of scientific data on marijuana poses a major problem, especially in regards to medical cannabis.

Cannabis produces more than 100 compounds called cannabinoids, but most of the existing data focuses on THC and CBD, the most abundant cannabinoids. Although most of the other cannabinoids are present in minute levels, they interact with each other in a phenomenon dubbed the “entourage effect,” affecting how each strain affects people. However, we have barely any data on these other substances of the entourage effect.

Cannabis may still be illegal at the federal level, but stakeholders and medical cannabis patients need this data now. As such, researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder cast their nets out for ways they could find reliable data on how the cannabis plant works. Their study, which was recently published in the journal Plos One,” suggests that artificial intelligence (“AI”) could help fill the massive knowledge gap plaguing the nascent cannabis industry.

Diana Vergara, an evolutionary biologist at CU Boulder, says that although the industry treats cannabis varieties as if they were standardized, much like Girl Scout Cookies or Gorilla Glue, in actuality the smell, taste and overall effects are never standard. On top of minor cannabinoids, a wide variety of flavonoids and terpenes also impact the taste, aroma and overall effect of a cannabis plant. To get a full analysis of all the chemicals in the cannabis plant, Vergara teamed up with Brian Keagan, an assistant professor in CU Boulder’s Department of Information Science to analyze data from more than 17,600 cannabis flower cultivars.

Most of this data focused on THC and CBD, with only 153 samples containing data on the other seven main cannabinoids. Data on the minor cannabinoids was barely present, with some of them not even being measured. To figure out this missing data, the team employed machine learning, using statistical methods and algorithms to find hidden patterns in the data sets. They found that the assumption that strains with more THC have less CBD, and vice versa, was false, and that strain names are not reliable indicators of the chemical makeup or overall potency.

This is just a start, the researchers note, saying they need widespread industry cooperation if they are to use this technology to fill the sector’s knowledge gaps. Data from more cultivars, however insufficient it is, will help the researchers use AI technology to figure out chemical interactions and how they can be harnessed for human benefit. Among other things, retailers would be able to list full chemical profiles on product labels, and it would lead to a much more reliable strain-naming system.

Cannabis companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC), which are looking to genetically engineer cannabis cultivars, could massively benefit from the deployment of AI in their operations.

420 with CNW — Marijuana Extracts: The New Focus of the Marijuana Industry

As the global marijuana industry continues growing, major businesses are partnering with companies in the industry, conducting research and exploring marijuana in an attempt to develop new product lines for the medical and recreational segments of the industry.

In addition, regulatory changes are being made through supportive federal legislative action in the marijuana space allowing marijuana extraction companies to grab innovative economic investment opportunities as well as develop a new generation of edibles.

Estimates show that by 2026, the global marijuana industry will reach $97 billion, with a compounded annual growth rate of roughly 32% in that period. However, while marijuana and its byproducts are utilized in various medical and recreational capacities, preliminary sector growth has shown that more profits will be made via products that need specialized techniques and additional processing to manufacture, such as beverages, oils and edibles.

This explains why a number of companies are focused on marijuana extracts and the production of new edible products.

So, what are marijuana extracts?

Marijuana extracts refer to different products that contain higher levels of CBD and THC than are commonly found in the marijuana plant. The CBD and THC levels of marijuana extracts can vary significantly, with some extracts hitting 99% high CBD or THC.

CBD, or cannabidiol in full, is a popular cannabinoid that is commonly seen as a therapeutic solution for mental issues and pain, among other problems. The anecdotal evidence notwithstanding, more research is required to confirm the nonintoxicating cannabinoid’s possible medical uses and benefits.

On the other hand, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC for short, is a cannabinoid that induces a high and offers its users an intoxicating and euphoric experience.

So, how will extracts benefit the marijuana industry?

A BDS Analytics and ArcView Market Research report released in 2018 forecasted that the marijuana edibles market in North America would be more than $4 billion by 2022, noting that drink and food products made up nearly 12% of total marijuana spending in 2017, in both the United States and Canada.

This information has prompted many extraction companies to diversify their avenues of revenue and portfolio of services to enhance their value. Other companies have developed more vertically integrated business models to grow their autonomy in the marijuana market as well as manage their exposure in the growing space.

Formulation engineering and technological advancement has created progressive tools to alter marijuana at the molecular level for greater bioavailability, which will enable extraction providers and manufacturers of edibles to boost consumer trust.

Some companies, such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF), have already established themselves in the cannabis extracts niche, and they are well ahead of any others that are looking to join this promising segment.

420 with CNW — Federally Funded Research Concludes Testing THC Level to Detect Driver Impairment Is Unreliable

In a bid to reduce the rates of impaired driving as cannabis becomes more accessible, several states have set THC thresholds that bar individuals who have more than a certain amount of THC in their system from driving. The thinking is that, as with alcohol, higher levels of THC in the blood are directly responsible for higher levels of impairment, and establishing a threshold gives law enforcement officials a standard for which they can test to see how impaired an individual is. While it is a noble policy that’s geared towards ensuring safety on the roads, cannabis proponents have long argued that such THC limits are arbitrary and have no scientific backing.

A study funded by the National Institute of Justice (“NIJ”) sought to find the relationship between THC levels and impairment, and the results were quite interesting. After giving basic field sobriety and cognitive tests to 20 individuals who had consumed cannabis, either as edibles or as vapes, the federally funded study found that the amount of THC in an individual’s system could not be used to accurately predict impairment. It’s not in question that consuming cannabis with moderate to high levels of THC will impair your thinking and physical reactions.

Study participants who consumed more than 5mg of THC all experienced observable psychomotor impairment, the RTI International researchers found. However, they concluded that THC levels were not an accurate and reliable indicator of cannabis intoxication in the test participants, regardless of the mode of consumption used orally, smoked or vaped.

Although this is just one study with a limited number of participants, the results provide some evidence in support of what many cannabis proponents have been saying: per se laws limiting THC levels and barring people from driving may not be fully based on scientific evidence.

Paul Armentano, NORML deputy director, isn’t surprised by the study’s findings, saying there is no science backing the per se THC threshold policies being enforced by several states. Additionally, the tests used to determine impairment did not seem to work on any of the study participants, with tests such as standing on one leg, balancing and walking in a straight line being poor indicators of cannabis impairment.

In some cases, the levels of THC, cannabidiol and cannabinol reported by the toxicology tests did not correlate with the observable cognitive and psychomotor impairment. Some study subjects would be highly impaired while tests showed their systems had low THC levels, yet the per se laws in some states would allow these individuals to stay on the road. As such, the researchers concluded that while THC does cause impairment, THC levels in the blood, urine and saliva are not reliable indicators of cannabis intoxication.

These findings from a federally funded study address one of the misconceptions regarding cannabis that the entire industry, including Sonoma Biologics Corp., have encountered at one point or another. Hopefully, more information will become available on how to accurately determine cannabis intoxication among motorists.

NOTE TO INVESTORS: The latest news and updates relating to Sonoma Biologics Corp. are available in the company’s newsroom at https://cnw.fm/Sonoma

420 with CNW — Cannabis Boom Revives Storefronts, Factories; Brings Jobs to Michigan

Before the state of Michigan legalized marijuana, various areas in the Southwest were filled with empty storefronts and warehouses. However, the plant’s legalization brought with it marijuana-industry investors into the state who were looking for locations to process and grow plants, as well as establish dispensaries.

City leaders in southwest Michigan state that the marijuana industry has brought more than 10 years’ worth of redevelopment to the area, adding that even more projects are scheduled to begin in the next year or so. In the last two years alone, the sum investment in equipment and buildings in Buchanan and Niles has surpassed $50 million, with the cities noting that more than 250 new employment opportunities have been created in each city. Additionally, taxes collected by the state from cannabis businesses in the area have been allocated to different communities.

Thus far, there are nearly a dozen provisioning/dispensing centers in Edwardsburg, Buchanan and Niles, with plans to launch more, including micro-businesses. In addition to this, there are more than 10 growing operations in the Galien, Eau Claire, Benton Harbour, Buchanan and Niles Townships, with more planned.

Apart from the willingness of local officials to consider cannabis businesses, investors are also interested in the area because of the many available empty buildings that can be turned into facilities to cultivate, process and pack marijuana or establish dispensaries. Other investors have also been attracted to the abandoned storefronts in Buchanan and Niles, planning to turn them into adult-use and medical dispensaries, providing convenience for consumers from Indiana as well as other locations.

Officials are hopeful that the investments and employment opportunities will continue to increase in the near future as the marijuana market develops further in Buchanan, Niles and other areas. The development of the marijuana market throughout the state is also facilitating the entrance of new businesses such as Biggby Coffee and Culver’s, as foot traffic increases.

Earlier in March, the state’s Department of Treasury announced that it would be dispensing $10 million to more than a hundred counties and municipalities as part of the taxes gathered on recreational cannabis sold in the state. Department officials added that roughly $24 million would be divided evenly between the Michigan transportation fund and K-12 education.

Most of the buildings that have been occupied by marijuana retailers and cultivators might have otherwise been torn down. For instance, the Simplicity plant, which covers roughly 750,000 square feet and is currently being restored for use by marijuana processors and cultivators, was due to be torn down.

The economic benefits that cannabis firms bring to Michigan can be viewed as a microcosm of what is happening in all states where legal marijuana markets exist and entities like Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF) are allowed to operate.

420 with CNW — UC San Diego Research Explores Cannabis Use Against Migraines

Long before America had a growing state-legal cannabis sector, regular users claimed the controversial drug was a great pain relief option. With more than 30 states now allowing the use of medical marijuana, thousands of patients have been able to get a taste of cannabis’ alleged pain-relief abilities. However, due to marijuana’s controlled status at the federal level, researchers have been unable to have a more conclusive look at its purported medical abilities — until recently.

Now, a group of researchers at UC San Diego is taking advantage of its state’s pro-cannabis legislation to launch the first placebo-controlled study into how migraines react to different cannabis strains. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) estimates that approximately 15.3% of the American population suffers from migraines, with pharmaceuticals being the only treatment option. Although plenty of users claim that cannabis works just as well as pharmaceuticals against migraines, research has been severely limited because the substance is still illegal at the federal level.

However, California allows both recreational and medical cannabis, and the team from UC San Diego is taking advantage of the situation. Led by Dr. Nathaniel Schuster, the researchers have been working with government authorities for several years to obtain the approval they needed. With the government also supplying medical-grade cannabis to be used in the study, the researchers give participants four different doses, each to be used on a separate kind of headache.

Each participant will be given a dose of cannabis with THC, one with a CBD/THC blend, one with just CBD and one with a placebo. They will not know what is contained within each dose, Schuster explains, and they will record their results with each dose via an app. Up to 30% of medical marijuana users take cannabis to alleviate some form of headache, says Schuster, who  hopes his study will finally provide concrete data behind the escalating practice of using cannabis for pain relief.

Dr. Jack Schrim, co-director of the Headache Center of Southern California, is a big fan of the study, and he has already referred several patients who wish to take part. Although many of his patients have asked him about using cannabis to alleviate their migraines, he is often unable to make any recommendations because there is little scientific data in the area. Fortunately, the UC San Diego study seeks to provide this information, and study results will help society better understand the link between cannabinoid receptors and cannabis treatments.

Individuals who wish to participate in the study must be affected by migraines at least once a month, and they cannot be regular cannabis or opioid users. If you meet these requirements, you can contact the Research Coordinator Phirum Nguyen at psnguyen@ucsd.edu or 858-822-3108.

Cannabis firms that serve both the recreational and medicinal cannabis markets, such as Grapefruit USA Inc. (OTCQB: GPFT), are likely to see an uptick in sales if this research finds conclusive evidence of the claims that marijuana has migraine-relieving properties.

420 with CNW — Genetic Testing May Help Transform the Marijuana Sector

Recent research conducted by CSO and president of EVIO Labs Inc. (OTC: EVIO) Anthony Smith and M.J. Murdock Metabolomics Lab director Bernd Markus Lange, together with their colleagues, may be useful to marijuana consumers, producers and breeders. The researchers examined various data sets to differentiate marijuana strains.

Each strain of marijuana contains different concentrations of cannabinoids, including CBD, which is nonpsychoactive, and THC, which is psychoactive. This allows consumers to choose marijuana based on desired effects, such as particular aromas and relaxation. However, the genetic information that makes up these differences isn’t well understood.

This is why the researchers’ discoveries will be useful, as they will help make sure that consumers choose products that have been labeled appropriately and come in handy in new cultivar development. Additionally, the findings will enable marijuana producers and breeders to determine the type of cannabinoid and sex of young plants.

Lange, who is also a professor at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, explained that terpenoids and cannabinoids were mainly concentrated in marijuana flowers, with Smith adding that despite this, they didn’t share the same biosynthetic pathways. For their study, the researchers from Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science designed assays to help determine cannabinoid type and sex of cultivars, which are young plants.

One of the researchers, Jacob Toth, explained that cultivars shared chemical, physiological and morphological characteristics, noting that they discovered that some plants produced just as much CBD as THC. Toth observed that plants which produced more levels of THC were problematic, which emphasized the need to develop a way to identify plants that produce too much THC to assist growers in remaining compliant.

The researchers used algorithms and RNA-seq to identify distinct gene networks in marijuana strains. In addition to this, they also quantified and separated terpenoids and cannabinoids through the use of liquid chromatography and gas chromatography, with their findings demonstrating a correlation between terpenoid and cannabinoid products and biosynthetic genes.

Lange noted that this showed that marijuana strains could be differentiated by conducting an analysis of transcriptomic and metabolic data sets. He added that the marijuana industry as a whole would benefit from genetic testing, as it would allow them to label various strains correctly.

Furthermore, Smith explained how transcriptomic, genomic or metabolic data could serve different purposes, noting that while the first two were markets growers would need in order to validate their engineering and breeding efforts, the latter could be utilized as a benchmark for developing and studying cultivars for therapeutic needs and consumer interests. This, he said, would drive therapeutic research and product preference.

A number of marijuana companies such as Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) (OTCQB: PACRF) (FSE: 4XM) are already leveraging the power of genetics in order to produce superior products, so it is just a matter of time before genetic testing is used in all aspects of the industry.

420 with CNW — Are CBD Gummies Worth Trying Out?

Ever since Congress legalized industrial hemp and its derivatives via the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp extract cannabidiol (“CBD”) has become exceedingly popular. It is part of a group of compounds called cannabinoids that are produced by plants in the cannabis family, and unlike THC, it does not get users high. Instead, CBD is allegedly packed with numerous health benefits, and as the industry has matured, CBD edibles have become especially popular with consumers.

In fact, the CBD edibles space is one of the fastest-growing markets in the nascent CBD industry, growing from what was a niche product just a couple of years ago to becoming one of the most-searched-for foods on the internet. Not only are they sweet and fun, but they also allow customers to consume CBD in a relatively discreet manner. With several preliminary studies finding that cannabidiol may be able to relieve a wide variety of health conditions, CBD gummies are a great way for consumers to access these benefits in a tasty, fun package.

But is their popularity warranted? Are CBD gummies just a fad that will lose steam in a few years, or are they effective products that are worth your hard-earned money? Research into cannabidiol’s health benefits, although quite limited, shows that CBD-infused gummies are worth the purchase, especially if you are trying to address certain issues. And since they are often made using healthier, natural ingredients, they can be great alternatives to regular candy.

Unlike CBD oils, tinctures, or salves, which can seem a little complicated, especially to the novice CBD user, gummies are fairly straightforward. They usually contain low doses of CBD, so you can easily figure out the dosage that works best for you after only a few tries. Since cannabidiol reacts differently with each person, you’ll definitely have to use it for a day or two before you find a dose that sufficiently reduces your season. With their low dosage and ability for discreet use, CBD gummies are a great way to do this.

You can use CBD gummies to help reduce the symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, stress and inflammation. Thanks to their small, predetermined doses, cannabidiol-infused gummies can be easily incorporated into your daily wellness routine. Taking a couple of CBD gummies throughout the day would ensure your system gets a steady supply of CBD as the gummies are broken down in the stomach and metabolized by the liver, making them perfect for conditions like chronic pain.

If you wish to boost the CBD levels in your system to manage pain, reduce stress or help your body recover from a strenuous workout, you could use gummies along with products such as CBD patches and oils. However, make sure you consult your physician before you start taking CBD regularly, especially if you are pregnant or are currently taking other medication.

With CBD legal at the federal level, there is no shortage of reputable companies that manufacture CBD-infused products, such as The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER), which produces a high-quality line of CBD-infused beverages.

420 with CNW — Study Finds Medical Cannabis Containing THC Can Work Better Than Cannabidiol

The past decade has seen medical cannabis become exceedingly popular as more than 30 states have passed legislation allowing qualifying patients to use marijuana for medical purposes. Consequently, there has been increased, although still limited, research into marijuana’s medical potential, and one theory has almost become a fact in many people’s minds. THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive agent in cannabis, has been unofficially dubbed the fun cannabinoid that has barely any medicinal properties and gets users high while CBD (cannabidiol) is the medical powerhouse responsible for marijuana’s purported medical abilities.

Most of state-legal medical cannabis programs only allow cannabis with very limited THC levels, and a majority of companies in the medical marijuana space have leaned into the “THC is for fun, but CBD is medicinal” theory. However, a recent study found that this theory may be wrong, with plenty of cannabis users deriving immediate and effective relief from nausea after consuming cannabis strains with more THC and less CBD. Conducted by researchers at the University of New Mexico, the study has been described as the largest study of its kind.

To arrive at this conclusion, the researchers tracked cannabis users’ habits, symptoms, the cannabis products they used and the consequent relief (or lack of) they felt after consuming cannabis via the Releaf app. Not only did the researchers deduce that THC-dominant cannabis offered relief against nausea in as little as five minutes but that smoking cannabis flower offered the individuals faster, more substantial relief compared to using edibles or vaporizers. Cannabis products with more THC were generally more effective than CBD-dominant cannabis products, with research published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology” in April reporting that cannabis users who consumed products high in CBD achieved less relief on average.

The researchers analyzed 886 cannabis users looking to obtain nausea relief from June 6, 2016, to July 8, 2019, through an estimated 2,220 self-administration sessions. The users reported which specific products they were using, the symptoms they were trying to eliminate and how these symptoms reacted to cannabis, all in real time. Jacob Vigil, the study’s co-author and associate professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico, says that this discovery was quite surprising to the researchers.

However, the study co-author and the lead author of the study Dr. Sarah Stith, who is also an assistant professor of economics at the University of New Mexico, reported that this study doesn’t give THC the all clear. The substance still presents significant long-term effects on high-risk individuals such as pregnant women and children, and nausea is only one area in which THC may shine brighter than CBD. While there are other symptoms that cannabidiol may relieve more effectively than THC, this study provides evidence against the prevalent theory that THC will just get you high but CBD is packed with medicinal properties.

As this scientific proof mounts, companies such as RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH), which makes devices that can help patients measure their medical cannabis dosage more accurately, will see a heightened demand for their products.

420 with CNW — Demand for Cannabis Beverages Seems Poised to Explode

A report released by Headset in March stated that advancements in marijuana infusion technology and the introduction of new brands into the market would boost cannabis beverage sales. The marijuana analytics firm noted that since the start of last year, cannabis beverage purchases had grown rapidly in Canada, making up roughly 4% of overall purchases.

At the moment, the cannabis beverage market is filled with numerous SME craft companies. Many large-scale manufacturers of alcoholic manufacturers are keen to enter the market, with most of them working to develop new products. For instance, Heineken recently introduced to the market Hi-Fi Hops in its beer category, which provides zero-calorie, zero-carb and cannabis-infused drinks.

HEXO also entered into a partnership with Molson-Coors to develop Truss while Canopy Growth, which is the biggest producer of cannabis in Canada, partnered with Constellation Brands. Companies such as Truss Beverage have plans to launch new cannabis-infused beverages in the coming months. A survey carried out last year by the company found that the category’s awareness was high, with more than 85% of potential marijuana consumers. It also discovered that more than 30% of respondents ingested cannabis beverages because these eliminated the need to smoke.

So, what does an increase in marijuana-infused beverages mean for the alcohol sector?

A study conducted by the University of Georgia in 2017 found that since cannabis beverages were legalized in the United States, wine and beer purchase orders had dropped by more than 10% over the past decade. Additionally, product-level retail sales data from last year shows that in Canada, cannabis-infused beverages have recorded significant rates of growth in comparison with other products in the edibles category.

A separate study conducted by Mintel closely examined consumer interest drivers with regard to marijuana edibles. The study noted that the use of cannabis usually had various functions, including allowing people to sleep better, decreasing stress and anxiety, and enhancing relaxation.

In combination with appealing taste, the study explained that these factors created a good opportunity for product differentiation, adding that cannabis-infused beverages that provided the right doses to consumers could be useful to manufacturers. The study concludes that beverages and edibles were generally regarded to be more discreet and convenient as well as healthier and more expensive.

This may soon be remedied, however, with more products set to enter the market. Different products from different companies in the market will likely bring about a decrease in prices, which will in turn boost demand further.

As demand soars, sector players, such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) in the cannabis drinks segment, will likely deliver greater shareholder value while they grow.

420 with CNW — Nevada Legislature Sends Cannabis Consumption Lounge Bill to Governor

Cannabis reform advocates in Nevada may soon be treated with good news after the state legislature sent a bill that would legalize cannabis consumption lounges to the governor’s desk. Sponsored by Speaker Pro Tempore Steve Yeager, the legislation would create two new cannabis licensing categories, one for retail cannabis consumption lounges and the other for independent cannabis consumption lounges. The bill advanced through a state assembly committee in early April and was passed by the Nevada Assembly in late May before heading to the Senate for final approval.

Last week, the Senate overwhelmingly passed the bill in a 17–3 vote before sending it to Governor Steve Sisolak for his signature. Sisolak has been a major supporter of Nevada’s cannabis industry, and he is expected to sign the bill into law. If he does, Nevada will become the eighth state in the country to legalize cannabis consumption lounges. With tourism being an integral part of Nevada’s economy, stakeholders hope providing safe spaces such as these lounges for cannabis consumption will attract cannabis tourists once the coronavirus pandemic dies down and the country fully opens up.

Under the legislation, existing cannabis retailers will be able to apply for the retail cannabis consumption lounge license and sell cannabis products that can be consumed on-site by adults aged 21 and older. On the other hand, independent lounges would not be allowed to sell cannabis on their own. They would have to contract with existing cannabis retailers to deliver ready-to-consume cannabis products, which the independent lounges would then provide to eligible customers on-site.

The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board would be tasked with creating regulations for these consumption lounges and collecting fees from license applicants. According to the legislation, retailers that qualify as social equity applicants would be charged reduced fees, with the bill classifying a social-equity applicant as anyone who was adversely affected by anti-cannabis policies in the past. A further amendment to the bill, which was approved by both the House and the Senate, would allow local governments to adopt more restrictive regulations for cannabis consumption lounges within their jurisdictions if desired.

The Nevada Assembly also passed two separate measures: one stipulated that the amount of THC in a person’s blood could not be used to determine whether or not they were impaired while driving, and a second reducing penalties for minors who consume cannabis. Some advocates argued that the THC limit used to determine the level of impairment was arbitrary and lacked sufficient scientific evidence.

With such a progressive approach to cannabis legislation, it may not be long before Nevada catches the attention of companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Ltd. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) which operate on the super-state operator or multistate operator models.
