CannabisNewsBreaks – The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TSX: TGOD) (OTCQX: TGODF) Adapts Operations, Aggressively Reduces Costs While Expanding Product Portfolio

The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings (TSX: TGOD) (OTCQX: TGODF), a leading producer of premium, certified-organic cannabis, on Wednesday announced that, due to market conditions, it is adapting operations and aggressively reducing costs. According to the update, the company has postponed the startup of its Valleyfield facility in order to centralize cultivation operations at Ancaster. The Ontario facility is able to produce larger volumes than initially anticipated, enabling the company to delay Valleyfield cultivation operations while saving costs and capital. “Multiple factors, most particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, are contributing to an environment in which we must be extremely prudent with how we manage our cost structure. These are unprecedented times, and the situation continues to evolve. With the support and unity, I have seen from our employees, partners and stakeholders, I am very confident that TGOD can tackle this challenge and come out much stronger,” TGOD CEO Brian Athaide said in the news release. “We have seen very strong consumer and medical patient feedback from our recent TGOD Infusers launch and are looking forward to having them available in more stores quickly. These along with our upcoming additional 2.0 products are very unique and deliver superior consumer experiences which will help further differentiate and build our TGOD organic brand positioning.”

420 with CNW – Honolulu Marijuana Processor to Make Free Hand Sanitizer

When the Coronavirus first appeared in Wuhan, China late last year, no one expected it to have such a worldwide impact. A little more than two months after the virus started ravaging China, it has spread to most continents, infected more than 150,000 and left at least 9,000 people dead. Naturally, most countries are focused on containment efforts, and one of them is calling on people to maintain high levels of hygiene.

The virus spreads through droplets, and one of the best ways to prevent infection is thorough and constant hand washing. However, with massive numbers of people buying hand sanitizers in bulk, shortages were inevitable.

A Hawaiian cannabis company has stepped in to fill this void by providing free hand sanitizers to its clients. Aloha Green Holdings, which does business as Aloha Green Apothecary, has announced that it will “use its cannabis concentrates production line to produce large quantities of hydroalcoholic gels immediately.”

The cannabis firm operates the largest state of the art cannabis manufacturing lab in Hawaii, and it will use these facilities to manufacture free hand sanitizing gel to 329 card holding patients at its two dispensaries. Regulations require patients to have a 329 card to enter a cannabis retail dispensary.

Each patient will be limited to one 50ml bottle per day until Aloha Green ramps up its production. The firm has stated that its intention is to dedicate enough manufacturing lines to produce free hand sanitizers for Oahu’s first responders.

Data from the Department of Health’s Medical Cannabis Registry Program shows that the average age of registered medical cannabis patients in Hawaii is approximately 52. Most of them have underlying medical conditions including cancer, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy, and Multiple Sclerosis, making them especially vulnerable to Covid-19.

“All our locations have a supply of hand sanitizer solution for employee and patient use. We have increased our sanitation procedures. Due to recent reports of hoarding, outages and low supplies in Hawaii, we have decided to manufacture and provide bottles of hand sanitizer free of charge to vulnerable patients who are at increased risk,” says Aloha Green Apoth spokesman TY Cheng.

Aloha Green Apoth CEO James Lee adds that “supporting our local community is a foundational goal for our company. Our cannabis medicines provide essential relief for many patients and we hope patients will continue to feel safe at our dispensaries.”

The firm reminds people that although using a 60%-plus alcohol-based solution is effective, health authorities say that using soap and water is still the most effective method to clean your hands and avoid infection.

Experts say the example set by Aloha Green Apothecary is one that paints the entire cannabis industry, including Champignon Brands Inc. (CSE: SHRM), in good light as sector players are seen as going above and beyond to be helpful to the communities they serve.

420 with CNW – How Marijuana Retailers Can Adapt to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Most of us have never seen or experienced a disease of such epic proportions as the novel Coronavirus. Just a few months after it first appeared, the virus has infected over 150,000 people worldwide and left at least 10,000 dead. According to experts, the virus may end up infecting up to 70% of the world’s population if it continues spreading unabated.

In response, governments all over the world have ordered lockdowns of varying degrees. Since the virus is transmitted through droplets from coughs and sneezes, self-isolation and social distancing are the top preventive measures. This, coupled with constant and thorough hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is the best way to avoid infection.

Group gatherings are discouraged and all but the most essential businesses have to be closed. For many states, licensed marijuana dispensaries have been lucky to make the cut.

However, with the measures put forth by authorities in response to the pandemic, these businesses will have to adapt to keep both the staff and customers safe. For starters,

Prioritize online bookings. Large gatherings are the virus’ best friend, and people are advised to stay six feet away from each other. This, however, makes shopping in small dispensaries impossible. Online platforms are the best alternative as they allow customers to remotely book their purchase then pop over to the dispensary for a quick pickup.

Curbside pickups are another measure introduced to limit physical contact by states like California, Oregon, Illinois and Michigan. Customers remain in their vehicles, and an employee will bring out your order. Curbside pickups coupled with online bookings will result in a much more efficient and sterile transaction.

Even better, deliver. The best way to prevent congestion at the dispensary is to deliver. While this may require some resources if a delivery system isn’t already in place, it will be a lifesaver during long periods of self-isolation. Customers will want to buy from sellers who deliver right to their doorstep. It completely limits contact or even proximity to large groups, and if the driver takes proper precautions, the entire process will stay as sterile as possible.

While we all hope this pandemic wraps up as soon as possible, it’s more likely the virus will be with us for a while, and the lockdowns even longer. These measures will help marijuana retailers weather the storm that’s sure to come.

It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that cannabis companies like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) are already thinking of ways to adapt to the crisis in order to stay afloat and safeguard customers.

420 with CNW – Coronavirus Outbreak Prompts Nebraska Medical Marijuana Advocates to Halt Campaign

In late 2019, the novel Coronavirus, dubbed COVID-19, first appeared in Wuhan, China, and the country literally ground to a halt. The most hard-hit regions went into lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus, but it also drastically reduced the county’s manufacturing output. Since China is a known low-cost producer, tons of industries were affected by this disruption in manufacturing, including the cannabis sector.

However, now that the virus has spread to most other continents except Antarctica, supply chain disruptions are only one of many issues we should be worrying about. With all but essential businesses ordered to close and millions of people told to self-isolate, there’s so much more to lose.

In Nebraska, for instance, activists announced on Thursday that they were temporarily suspending signature gathering for a campaign to legalize marijuana in the state. This is just one of the instances where drug policy reform efforts have been hampered by the Coronavirus, with some activists requesting emergency action to allow for alternative means to put the measures on state ballots.

“Thank you to all Nebraskans who have given their support so far to get voter approval of legalized medical cannabis on the ballot box this fall. Your signatures, along with overwhelming citizen support for the measure is going to help make it a reality and bring relief to individuals and communities throughout our entire state,” said Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana in a Facebook post.

Due to current circumstances, it is resigned to the fact that it will have to press pause for now. “Out of an abundance of caution and following the wider recommendations from public health officials, we are going to pause our volunteer and paid signature-gathering efforts within local community gathering places until the state indicates it is responsible to continue.”

“We look forward to the opportunity to get back out there to help Nebraskans create meaningful change for each other, and we wish your loved ones health and peace of mind right now,” the press release concludes.

The proposed amendment would allow doctors to recommend cannabis to patients suffering from predetermined medical conditions. They would also be allowed to possess, purchase and ‘discreetly’ cultivate marijuana for personal use.

The activists have to collect about 130,000 signatures by July 8 for the measure to qualify for the November ballot, although it is not clear how many signatures they have already collected or how long they will continue in-person signature gathering.

Experts believe that while marijuana industry players like MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC) are glad that the campaigners have taken the cautious step of halting signature gathering, it is hoped that the pandemic will end in time to give Nebraskans a chance to vote on the legalization of medical marijuana in the state.

420 with CNW – DEA Announces Plan to License More Marijuana Producers for Research

In a move that’s sure to lift some moods in these trying times, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently announced that it will be taking steps to expand the scope of marijuana research. The rule changes proposed by the agency will allow it to approve additional cannabis growers and diversify the types of marijuana available for use in studies.

“The Drug Enforcement Administration continues to support additional research into marijuana and its components, and we believe registering more growers will advance the scientific and medical research already being conducted,” said the Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon in a press release.

“DEA is making progress to register additional marijuana growers for federally authorized research, and will continue to work with other relevant federal agencies to expedite the necessary next steps.”

Back in 2016, the DEA announced that it was accepting applications for additional marijuana manufacturers, and 37 institutions submitted their applications. However, the agency was slow to review the applications, and one of the applicants filed and won a lawsuit that mandated the DEA to take action.

The DEA argued that the high volume of applications, coupled with the complications arising from international drug treaties which the U.S. is a party to, meant they would have to develop new regulations before approving the applications.

“This is an important step and a byproduct of the legal action we filed last summer. The agency indicated it would propose new rules to govern approving new applicants to manufacture marijuana for research, and these appear to be those rules,” says Sue Sisley, a researcher with the institution that filed the lawsuit.

For countries growing cannabis for research to comply with United Nations rules, they have to meet five requirements. Currently, the DEA follows three of the requirements, but the proposed rule would amend the agency’s regulations so that the DEA directly carries out the two remaining requirements.

They are; requiring cultivators to deliver their cannabis directly to a government agency in a timely manner, but no longer than four months after harvest, and; ensuring that the agency holds the “exclusive rights of importing, exporting, wholesale trading, and maintaining stocks of cannabis and cannabis resin,” except as it concerns medical marijuana preparations.

As per the DEA’s notice, the agency “may accept delivery and maintain possession of such crops at the registered location of the registered manufacturer authorized to cultivate cannabis consistent with the maintenance of effective controls against diversion.”

The notice states that in such cases, the DEA shall designate a secure storage mechanism at the registered location in which the DEA may maintain possession of the cannabis, and the DEA will control access to the stored cannabis.” It will also control importing, exporting, wholesale trading, and maintaining stocks, and it may “exercise its exclusive rights by authorizing the performance of such activities by appropriately registered persons.”

This news that more growers are about to be federally licensed is likely to be welcomed by sector players like Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) who would like to see more research being done by the academia and other entities whose findings will not be doubted by the public.
