CannabisNewsBreaks – LiveWire Ergogenics Inc. (OTC: LVVV) Sees Optimistic Future as Cannabis Products Market Forecasted to Reach $80 Billion by 2030

LiveWire Ergogenics (OTC: LVVV) expects to perform well during 2020 as industry analysts project the market for cannabis products will increase to $80 billion over the next decade, according to a recent AP article (http://cnw.fm/r01nN). An article discussing the company reads, “With the projected upswing in mind, LiveWire Ergogenics expects to be in a prime position to leverage the expected growth with the imminent start of production at its Estrella Ranch Weedery. ‘The cannabis market is ever changing and complex,’ LiveWire CEO Bill Hodson stated in a news release (http://cnw.fm/5UPFh). ‘While a flood of investment has entered the market over the last two years based on overly optimistic projections, questionable market analysis and unproven business models, these expectations are now being hit by the reality of a still unconventional business, complicated by the typical growing pains of a rapidly emerging new industry.’ . . . With the industry now set to explode, companies must begin scrutinizing their operations for inefficiencies and evaluate what works and what doesn’t,’ he continued. ‘In other words, “doing it right,” a principle that LiveWire has been trying to follow strictly for the last two years, supporting the momentum of this new and promising industry.’”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Illinois Grabs $3.2 Million on Day One of Legal Recreational Marijuana Sales

A recent article on Fox News by Vandana Rambaran highlighted reaction to Illinois becoming the 11th state to allow marijuana sales and use for recreational purposes. According to the article, the state raked in $3.2 million on the first day of legal recreational marijuana sales under the new law where people, age 21 or older, are allowed to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower and up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate. Public consumption is still not allowed under the new law. Nearly three dozen Illinois dispensaries have been issued licenses to sell recreational marijuana, with an additional 75 licenses to be granted by May. State officials estimate that cannabis sales could generate $250 million for Illinois by 2022. Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton represented just one of 77,128 purchases on day one in the state “to celebrate a big day in Illinois,” she said.

420 with CNW – 6 States That Could Vote on Marijuana Ballot Measures in 2020

A wave of marijuana legalization has been sweeping across the U.S., and its genesis can be traced to Colorado and Washington approving marijuana legalization initiatives way back in 2012. In each biennial election that followed, additional states followed through with their own marijuana legalization initiatives, and experts believe 2020 will be a landmark year for marijuana.

Marijuana advocates believe there are currently 26 states where voters might have to vote on marijuana initiatives, either for full-scale recreational legalization, legalization of medical cannabis or decriminalization. Let’s look at 6 states that might table marijuana legalization ballot initiatives in 2020.

In 2020, voters will vote on an initiative dubbed ‘Smart & Safe Arizona’ led by a group of Arizona medical cannabis companies. It will allow people 21 and older to possess, consume, cultivate and purchase cannabis from licensed retailers. Individuals with prior marijuana convictions could have their records expunged, and some tax revenue from legal sales will be used to invest in communities disproportionately affected by prohibition.

The fight for legalization in Florida started in 2016 when voters approved a constitutional amendment to legalize medical cannabis. An advocacy group called Make It Legal Florida is seeking to push it further. It is working to place a full-scale marijuana legalization measure for the 2020 ballot that would allow adults 21 and over to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. It is backed by cannabis companies like MedMen and Parallel.

The Idaho Cannabis Coalition is pushing a proposal that would allow approved patients and their caregivers to possess up to four ounces of marijuana, and it would establish a system of licensed and regulated growers, processors, testers and retail dispensaries. The organizers would have to collect 55,057 valid signatures from voters for the measure to qualify for the ballot.

Mississippi activists have already filed a measure for medical cannabis for 2020’s ballot, along with what they say is more than enough signatures for the measure to qualify. If approved, it will allow patients with any of 22 conditions including chronic pain and PTSD to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis per 14-day period.

Missouri voters already approved a medical cannabis measure back in 2018, and activists are looking to expand upon it with broader marijuana legalization. Several proposed measures to end prohibition have been filed with the secretary of state. Still, they lack significant push, and they need groups with enough funding to get them off the ground.

Oklahoma voters approved a medical cannabis ballot last year during a midterm primary election. Activists are now looking to expand the measure with a broader marijuana legalization initiative this year. The effort is backed by the National New Approach PAC, and it will have to collect 178,000 signatures from registered voters to qualify for the ballot. The measure would allow people 21 and over to possess, cultivate and purchase cannabis from licensed retailers.

These six are just a tip of the U.S. states in which ballot measures aimed at reforming cannabis laws are planned. Experts believe that such grassroots changes give the marijuana industry, including entities like HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF) and VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF), hope that federal reforms could soon happen once most of the country legalizes cannabis in some form.

420 with CNW – Top Italian Court Rules That Growing a Few Marijuana Plants at Home is Legal

Italians have joined the club of countries that allow their residents to grow and use a limited amount of marijuana at home as long as it’s for personal use. The country’s highest court in Rome made the landmark decision long before Christmas, on December 19, but local media only got wind of the news last Friday.

Legislation dating back to the 1990s barred the farming and sale of marijuana, but there has been great uncertainty about the laws due to contradictory court decisions. After being asked to clarify, the Court of Cassation declared that the crime of growing narcotics should exclude “small amounts grown domestically for the exclusive use of the growers.” In a one page statement, the court said that “at home, small scale cultivation activities are to be considered excluded from the application of the penal code.”

Matteo Mantero, a senator from the 5-Star Movement, the governing coalition party, presented an amendment to the 2020 budget calling for the legalization and regulation of domestic cannabis use. Sadly, it was ruled inadmissible by the Senate speaker form Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative Forza Italia party. He says that the Court has opened up the way for cannabis legalization and that it’s “up to us now.”

Leonardo Fiorentini, a representative of the drug policy advocacy group Forum Droghe, says that it’s a ” very important decision because it will shield from prison those who choose to cultivate marijuana for personal use.”

In 2013, a court in Torre Annunziata, a small town in southern Italy, sentenced a man to a year in prison and a $3,365.85 fine for growing two cannabis plants at home. After a series of appeals, different sections of the court system came to different conclusions on allowable scale of marijuana cultivation. In August, the court turned to its highest authority, the Sezioni Unite, which is like the Supreme Court of the country.

It concluded that the rudimentary techniques and small amounts produced in small scale growing makes it irrelevant to the illegal drug trade that the criminal law is intended to address.

There are 6.2 million cannabis users in Italy, most of them aged between 15 and 34, according to the newspaper Corrier della Sera. More men than women consume cannabis in the country. Although it is currently decriminalized for personal use, medical and industrial use is heavily restricted. The country is dotted with special “weed shops” that cater to people who smoke recreationally, as long as the plants maintain a THC level of below 0.6 percent.

Experts wonder what industry players like Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTCQB: NUGS) and Sproutly Canada Inc. (CSE: SPR) (OTCQB: SRUTF) (FRA: 38G) think of such decisions abroad when the U.S. federal government has remained steeped in a prohibitionist stance on marijuana.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Marijuana Legalization in Illinois, Michigan Brings Patchwork of Legal and Cultural Snares

A recent article on Fox News by Frank Miles highlighted a patchwork of legal and cultural snares as the marijuana recreational market expands to Midwestern states. According to the article, the December 1 start of legal sales in Michigan and the January 1 start in Illinois brings to the Midwest a climate where some neighboring states allow limited marijuana use for medical purposes, but none have moved to permit recreational use. The Associated Press reported that officials have been renewing warnings against the dangers of “canna-tourism” and carrying marijuana products over state lines. In Michigan, where $4.7 million of recreational marijuana was sold in the first three weeks of December, regulators were unsure how much was bought by out-of-state customers. Many shop owners claimed brisk business, particularly from neighboring Ohio and Indiana and nearby Illinois. “There’s been people from all over,” said Bart Kupczyk, a co-owner and director of retail at Ann Arbor-based Greenstone Provisions, one of 23 Michigan retailers licensed for adult-use recreational sales. “Ann Arbor is close to Ohio. It’s a destination city in its own right as a fairly well-known college town.”

420 with CNW – 5 Big Wins for the US Marijuana Industry in 2019

This year has seen several advancements for the marijuana cause, with a bevy of positive legislative changes passed. Let’s look at some of the highlights of the year.

President Trump reiterates support for respecting state marijuana laws. President Trump proved an ally to the marijuana industry when he passed the Farm Bill. He has stated more than once that he supports the right of localities to enact their own marijuana policies with little federal interference.

“It’s a very big subject and right now; we are allowing states to make that decision. A lot of states are making that decision, but we’re allowing states to make that decision,” he said in August.

The Cannabis Banking Bill was passed by the House. Due to cannabis’ murky reputation, banks shied away from working with cannabis operators, forcing them to operate on a cash-only basis, which was quite unsafe. It also kept them away from credit and loan services.

This September, the House approved a bill to let banks serve marijuana businesses without fear of repercussions from federal regulators.

A lot of states decriminalized cannabis possession. Quite a number of people are arrested every day for cannabis possession, accounting for half of America’s total drug arrests. Although Illinois was the only state to pass a new marijuana legislation law this year, several other states have removed the threat of imprisonment for people caught with small amounts of cannabis.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a cannabis decriminalization bill in April that treats possession of up to half an ounce with a $50 fine. In July, Hawaii Governor David allowed a marijuana decriminalization bill removing incarceration as a punishment for possession of three grams or less of cannabis for $130 fine.

Americans have shown support for legalization in droves. According to a poll by Gallup, two-thirds of Americans said they support the legalization of marijuana. A separate survey by Pew found that 67% of Americans wouldn’t mind seeing the end of cannabis prohibition.

Regulators have taken steps to implement a legal hemp market. For decades, hemp was a controlled substance, put in the same boat with its psychoactive cousin marijuana. However, the 2018 Farm Bill changed this, classifying cannabis with less than 0.3% THC levels as legal industrial hemp.

In October, the USDA published its interim final rule on hemp in a bid to regulate the industry and make it more hospitable to sellers and consumers.

All in all, this year has been instrumental in furthering the cannabis cause. We can only hope that there’s better to come. Experts believe that cannabis industry players like Hemptown USA and Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) are banking on the hope that as the new year beckons, things can only get better for the industry.
