420 with CNW — Canadian Cannabis Executives Share Their Industry Policy Reform Wishlists for 2022

Last year was a mixed bag of a year for Canadian marijuana investors. Speculation about the future of the sector fluctuated wildly as talks about federal legalization heated up in the United States and recreational cannabis prices reached historic lows. Additionally, players in the Canadian cannabis space are waiting with bated breath for the three-year review of the country’s cannabis legislation by federal lawmakers. The review began in December 2021, and the health minister will present the department’s findings and recommendations in 2023.

In the interim, industry leaders have a few policy changes in mind that they would like to see in 2022. George Smitherman, president and CEO of the Cannabis Council of Canada, would like stronger edible products allowed on the market. Currently, cannabis law limits potency to 10 mg of THC per packaged product. In comparison, California allows for 100 mg of THC per package. Smitherman also feels it would be beneficial if customers could buy more cannabis-infused beverages in a single package because as the 28-gram possession limit for THC prevents them from purchasing more than five beverages.

Another change would allow producers to sell their dried cannabis flower in packaging that isn’t childproof to reduce the amount of single-use plastics they use. Since cannabis flower presents a significantly reduced ingestion risk to children compared to candy, using nonchildproof packaging would also be safe.

However, the biggest challenge the industry faces right now is falling recreational cannabis prices, says Smitherman. Although prices are designed to draw customers from the illicit market, they have had a major impact on producers’ bottom lines.

Lawmakers can ease the pressure off producers by adjusting excise tax rates. Mandesh Dosanjh, president and CEO of Pure Sunfarms, would like a reform of the industry’s excise tax rules. Rather than a fixed or flat rate, he says, the government ought to change the tax to a more manageable percentage. As of December 10, cannabis sales are taxed at $4.97 per gram.

Dosanjh also criticized the country’s inconsistent lab testing standards, which often end up with different results for the same product. This has allowed some producers to test their products in different labs and then use the result with the highest cannabinoid value, which often translates to higher prices.

Niel Marotta, president and CEO of Indiva, would like to see an increase in potency limits for edibles. He also hopes that Quebec’s government will remove its ban on edibles and vape products. Low prices are also a point of contention, he says, although his company is more insulated because it deals with edibles rather than cannabis flower. Marotta hopes to be able to break into the restaurant industry one day with a variety of cannabis-infused edibles, including salt and sugar.

If the long-overdue changes are made to the regulations governing edibles and cannabis drinks, we could see an explosion in the demand for the products of Canada-based companies, including BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC).

420 with CNW — Survey Finds One-Half of US Marijuana Consumers Would Choose Marijuana over Alcohol

The past couple of years have seen more than two dozen states pass some form of cannabis regulation, making marijuana more accessible to the public than ever. Customers are loving it — in just a few short years, consumers have purchased billions of dollars’ worth of legal cannabis. Based on the almost insane demand for cannabis, experts project that the industry will see significant growth in the future, achieving a valuation of $198 billion in 2028. Customers are especially attracted to cannabis due to its allegedly potent and versatile medical abilities.

Studies have found that cannabis can have therapeutic effects, including reducing pain, anxiety and depression. While the industry definitely needs more research into marijuana’s potential risks and benefits, there is plenty of proof that cannabis has positive attributes for health. This means that different people will consume cannabis for different reasons, be it to alleviate pain or induce sleep. According to a new survey, a growing number of cannabis consumers in the country prefer cannabis to alcohol.

Titled “Cannabis & Wellness: A New Consumer Paradigm,” the survey from New Frontiers Data looked at cannabis consumer trends and patterns of use. Although the most common reasons for using cannabis was, unsurprisingly, to relieve stress and relax, 23% of the respondents said they use the controversial plant to boost their overall wellness. Almost 80% of those who were surveyed said that using cannabis had a positive impact in their lives. Most importantly, one-half of the respondents said that they had began replacing alcohol consumption with cannabis.

Younger generations have been drinking less and less alcohol, so it’s not surprising that these younger consumers would turn to cannabis. Not only does the substance have zero of the side effects alcohol consumption induces, but it also has some therapeutic benefits. Players such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) in the cannabis industry have been quick to notice this, developing a range of alcoholic and nonalcoholic cannabis-infused drinks to meet market demand for an alternative to alcohol.

The coronavirus pandemic saw a spike in cannabis consumption as people struggled to cope with the stress of being locked inside for long periods of time and potentially contracting a deadly virus. Field Trip Health ran a survey of 2,015 Canadians this year and found that a majority were feeling lethargic and depressed during the pandemic.

An estimated 50% of the respondents said they had upped their cannabis consumption while 44% increased their alcohol consumption. The study also found that more than 70% of those surveyed had increased their screen time and another 70% were overeating to cope with the pandemic.

420 with CNW — Common Myths About Marijuana Edibles That Have Been Debunked

As more states legalize cannabis for recreational and/or medical use, the popularity of cannabis edibles grows. People in legal states can now make their own homemade edible versions or purchase edibles from state-legal dispensaries. Unfortunately, some people are somewhat skeptical when it comes to consuming edibles, given the common myths spread about them.

While some myths perpetuate harmless but incorrect narratives about cannabis, others are harmful. Today, we’ll look at and debunk the most common myths about edibles.

Mangoes increase marijuana’s potency

If you are wondering how in the world someone could start a myth that consuming a mango alongside cannabis will make the potency of the marijuana shoot through the roof, here is your answer. It so happens that marijuana and mangoes both have a compound called myrcene. This terpenoid contributes to the smell as well as flavor of mangoes and marijuana.

However, that is as far as the similarities go. Cannabis potency is measured by how much THC is present in a given product, and the terpenoid myrcene in mangoes will not have any effect upon the potency of cannabis. If you find someone who swears that mangoes increase the strength of marijuana, ask them to read up on the placebo effect.

Raw cannabis can be used in edibles

Many people believe that all you need to do when making homemade edibles is to add raw cannabis into your cake or brownie mix. This is a mistake, because your cannabis needs to undergo a process that activates THC, known as decarboxylation. Raw marijuana that hasn’t undergone decarboxylation doesn’t induce the psychoactive effects sought by users, which means that adding raw marijuana to an edible recipe is wasteful, especially if your goal is to get high.

Consuming a lot of edibles is fatal

Edibles usually have a higher concentration of THC, which leaves most people who consume one concerned that they may have overdosed. While you may end up feeling the edible’s effects a bit more strongly, you shouldn’t worry that overindulging in edibles may result in a fatal overdose. This is because while edibles do contain high THC levels in comparison to the average joint, the level is still nowhere close to the amount that can cause a fatal cannabis overdose.

Edibles are best served as desserts

The popularity of marijuana-infused candies and marijuana brownies has perpetuated this fallacy, with the use of flavors such as chocolate and peanut butter in masking the taste of marijuana when making edibles only making the myth more believable.

This is not the case, however, as edibles can be eaten at any time of day and practically anywhere, as long as its legal. While edibles have been around for a while, cannabis drinks from companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) are also claiming an increasing share of the marijuana products market. This is a segment to watch for interested investors.

420 with CNW — Malta Becomes First Country in EU to Legalize Marijuana

Malta, an island-state located in the Mediterranean Sea, has become the first nation in the European Union to legalize the personal use and growing of marijuana. This move by Malta comes after the United Nations reclassified marijuana to recognize its therapeutic use in 2020.

Adults in the country will be allowed to grow a maximum of four plants in their homes and be in possession of up to seven grams of marijuana. However, smoking the herb in front of children or smoking it in public remains illegal.

The parliament of Malta voted in favor of the measure to legalize earlier this week, approving the reform with a vote of 36 to 27. Owen Bonnici, the country’s equality minister, stated that the move would prevent small-time users of marijuana from being arrested and limit drug trafficking by ensuring that users had a regularized and safe way to obtain marijuana.

The Nationalist Party, the country’s opposition party, voted against the reform. Bernard Grech, the opposition party’s leader, had warned that the reform would strengthen the illicit drug market and allow organized crime to take advantage.

Despite its approval in parliament, opponents are calling for President George Vella to not sign the reform into law. Signing the measure into law is the final stage, which requires the president’s approval.

Under the new law, any individual found in possession of more than 7 grams but less than 28 grams of cannabis could receive a fine of up to €100, which is equal to $112. Those caught smoking marijuana in front of any person below 18 will be fined €500 ($659) while those caught smoking in public will be fined €235 ($310).

Additionally, associations that will oversee the distribution of seeds to grow marijuana or the drug will be established. Legislators believe that this will regulate how much an individual can purchase, as every individual will be allowed to be a member of only a single association.

Minors found in possession of marijuana will, instead of facing criminal charges or arrest, be recommended with a treatment of care plan.

The first country to legalize marijuana for personal use globally was Uruguay, which legalized the subtance in 2013, with Canada following suit in 2018. Several other countries, including Switzerland, Luxembourg and Germany, recently announced their plans to set up legally regulated markets.

Nations such as the Netherlands tolerate the use of marijuana in its famous marijuana cafes, despite the plant being illegal in the country. In the United States, some states have legalized marijuana for recreational and/or medical use. However, the herb is still federally illegal.

For companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) that have their eye on a large market spanning different jurisdictions, Malta’s decision to end cannabis prohibition can be seen as a watershed moment since several other countries in the EU are likely to follow suit.

420 with CNW — Major Kombucha Company Ventures into Marijuana Space

The most popular Kombucha brand globally, GT’s Living Foods is venturing into a new market: the marijuana industry. The firm is launching a marijuana–infused brew known as Cannabliss in the state of California.

GT’s Living Foods has operated as part of the health and wellness sector for more than 20 years. It currently holds roughly 47% of the category market share through continued innovation. The brand has been brewing healthy beverages for more than two decades, which makes its move to create its first marijuana-infused line a well-calculated one.

The CEO and founder of the company, GT Dave, stated that the company couldn’t ignore the power of the marijuana plant as it continued to innovate with plant-based wellness, noting that the plant’s power went beyond recreational and aligned with the company’s belief that plants and food are medicine. GT Dave explained that when combined with other natural adaptogens, marijuana provided various healing properties and positive benefits.

With the introduction of its cannabis-infused beverage to the market, the company hopes to unleash the power of the cannabis plant so consumers can obtain some of its body health and mind benefits.

The company’s Cannabliss line combines CBD and THC with prebiotics from apple cider vinegar, full-spectrum marijuana and a blend of mushrooms, in order to nourish the gut. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana that induces a high. On the other hand, CBD (cannabidiol) is a common active ingredient found in marijuana. Unlike THC, this compound doesn’t cause any highs.

The beverage will be available in two varieties: wild and mild. The two come in these flavors:

  • Cannabliss wild ginger haze, which has a lemon and ginger flavor and has been infused with 3 mg of CBD and 7 mg of THC.
  • Cannabliss mild piña express, which has a pineapple flavor and has been infused with 7 mg of CBD and 3 mg of THC

Cannabliss will be available for purchase by consumers at various dispensaries in the state of California.

The company is one of the largest mainstream beverage companies to venture into the marijuana industry. Other big companies participating in the industry include Constellation Brands, which has injected billions into Canopy Growth.

Earlier this year, Canopy Growth began selling its CBD-infused sparkling water, Quatreau, which comes in four flavors: blueberry with acai, ginger with lime, passion fruit with guava and cucumber with mint.

The stage looks set for stiff competition between the new kid on the block and established cannabis drink companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC).

420 with CNW — Bill to Remove Regulatory Grey Area for CBD in Drinks, Supplements Filed in Congress

Although CBD has been legal since the 2018 farm bill legalized the cultivation and growth of industrial hemp and its derivatives, the young industry is largely unregulated. Hemp stakeholders have urged the federal government to craft comprehensive regulations for CBD as sales of CBD-infused products ramp up, but the responsible agencies have dragged their feet. As a result, the cannabidiol industry has attracted plenty of dishonest entities that have flooded the market with subpar CBD products which can even put consumers’ health at risk.

After years of back and forth, a bill that would remove the regulatory gray area for CBD-infused supplements and drinks has finally been unveiled. Introduced by bipartisan House lawmakers, the CBD Product Safety and Standardization Act would compel the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) to develop regulations for the lucrative CBD market.

The FDA will also have to hold a public comment period for information gathering on the maximum amount of cannabidiol that can be added to a beverage or food item per serving. The public comment period will also be instrumental in helping the FDA determine proper packaging and labeling requirements as well as the ‘conditions of intended use,’ which refers to what the label claims a product is to be used for.

The bill is sponsored by Representatives Kathleen Rice, Morgan Griffith, Dan Crenshaw and Angie Craig. According to a press release from Rice, CBD’s popularity has increased exponentially in the recent past, but the industry has been held back by the absence of federal regulations. The murky regulatory landscape puts customers at risk by providing minimal protections against subpar and often contaminated products and leaves businesses clamoring for some clarity. The new bill will create a comprehensive regulatory framework that will ensure unsafe products stay off the shelves and provide cannabis businesses with the stability they need to succeed, Rice says.

Griffith says that the FDA still hasn’t caught up with the reality that CBD is massively popular and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Like Rice, he says that the lack of regulation has put consumer health at significant risk and filled cannabis businesses with uncertainty. The CBD Product Safety and Standardization Act would fix these issues by compelling the FDA to act on CBD swiftly. As expected, the new bill has been met with support from the U.S. Hemp Roundtable and Consumer Brands Association. Jonathan Miller, general counsel for the roundtable praised certain aspects of the bill and said the hemp industry is thankful to its sponsors.

A law regulating the use of cannabidiol in drinks and supplements would be of great help to sector players such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) since it would be clear what rules everyone in the industry is playing by.
