420 with CNW — Study Looks to Reddit for Answers on Factors Fueling Cannabis Legalization

Researchers from Brown University recently conducted a study that examined posts on Reddit that could help explain what may have influenced the shift observed in the support for cannabis legalization by the public.

Babak Hemmatian, the researcher who led the study, used machine learning to conduct an analysis of more than 3 million comments made on Reddit in the period 2009–19, to understand the online conversations that drove individuals to support reform. The chosen period of study represents an important timeframe in the legalization movement at the state level.

The analysis revealed some unexpected trends, including the fact that individuals posting more character, judgment-based, generalized arguments was a clear prelude for state-level marijuana reform. This was observed around 2012 in particular as the first states ended marijuana prohibition.

In an interview, Hemmatian stated that his objective was to learn whether the way the public discussed cannabis facilitated the shift to bipartisan consensus in a few years and how the society’s attitude change influenced how people talked about marijuana.  The study also found that the legal implications for marijuana reform weren’t discussed in detail until after reforms had been passed in most states. This is in addition to discovering that discussions on marijuana’s health impacts only grew after legalization and mainly occurred in casual conversations.

In the report, the author of the study explained that both topics were pertinent to how and whether cannabis needed to be deregulated but were ignored in the decision-making process then addressed once the societal decision had been made. He further intimated that character judgments may have pushed individuals who weren’t opposed to legalization but hadn’t made up their minds over to the prolegalization side.

This isn’t the first time Reddit has been used to identify patterns and trends in marijuana consumption. In 2018, a study published in the “Drug and Alcohol Dependence” journal analyzed more than 2 million posts on the site, which led to various discoveries.

It seems researchers aren’t the only ones interested in investigating the intersection of social media and drug policy. Recently, the FDA revealed that it planned to use Reddit and other new sources of data to better understand public health issues surrounding the use of CBD and other cannabis derivatives, including THC. The agency also plans to develop a system to help find usage patterns and safety signals linked to emerging cannabis-derived products in real time. This includes THC, which the FDA warns consumers about, noting that the agency has yet to assess the substance’s effectiveness or safety.

The FDA warning notwithstanding, dozens of states have moved ahead to legalize the herb, and many companies, including Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS), are thriving in those established legal markets.

Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCQB: NUGS) is an emerging leader in the U.S. cannabis marketplace. The company is beginning to deploy its newly acquired licenses, including the opening of its first Los Angeles-based, customer-facing MDRN (Modern) Tree cannabis dispensary, as it takes key steps forward in its strategic plan to implement a farm-to-sale model. “After securing key licensing, we are wasting no time in deploying those assets to launch one of California’s top vertical cannabis models,” stated NUGS CEO Simon Yu. “MDRN Tree will be our factory retail store — our direct interface with our end-market community — where we plan on showcasing the cannabis flower produced at our NUGS Farm North cultivation site. This farm-to-sale model offers the potential to drive simultaneous gains in quality control and profitability, and I look forward to providing further updates as we make strides in this direction.” According to a recent article, following the launch of MDRN Tree, NUGS plans to deploy another of its new licenses for the establishment of an indoor cultivation facility with up to 1,200 grow lights. “The company projects ‘an upside potential for total production capacity of over 15,000 lbs. of premium exotic cannabis flower per year.”

420 with CNW — Federally Funded Survey Finds Significant Decline in Cannabis Use Among Youths

A new survey has found that the use of cannabis by youths reduced considerably this year. The Monitoring the Future survey was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It has been tracking adolescent attitudes towards drugs and drug behavior since 1975.

The self-reporting survey was taken by more than 32,000 students from 319 schools who completed it between February and June of this year. Its latest results show a significant decline in marijuana use among 8th, 10th and 12 graders in 2021. This is despite the fact that more laws to legalize marijuana are being enacted and implemented in various states across the country.

The survey’s findings show that in comparison to more than11% of 8th graders who reported that they used cannabis last year, only 7.1% did so this year. In 10th graders, this percentage dropped to 17.2% from the 28% recorded last year while in 12th graders, the number dropped to 30% this year, from the 35.3% recorded last year. This data offers evidence that supports the argument that legalizing cannabis for adults doesn’t lead to a rise in underage drug usage.

The survey, which was carried out by researchers at the University of Michigan, also found that the daily, 30-day and lifetime use of marijuana among adolescents also declined this year. A decline was also observed in the use of nicotine vaping, alcohol and other illicit drugs. However, the researchers note that the decline observed in past-year marijuana use is especially steep when compared to the consumption of all other illicit substances.

In a press release, National Institute on Drug Abuse director Nora Volkow stated that the agency had never observed such a huge decline in the use of drugs among teens in a one-year period, adding that the data highlighted an unforeseen consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, which caused tremendous shifts in the daily lives of adolescents. She noted that the agency was now focused on identifying the central elements of last year that contributed to the decline in drug usage in order to use it to inform future prevention efforts.

In a separate press release, the deputy director of NORML, Paul Armentano, stated that the survey’s findings added to scientific literature showing that cannabis regulation policies could be implemented in a manner that afforded grownups access while simultaneously limiting youth misuse and access. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (“NORML”) is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for the reform of cannabis laws for both recreational and medical use in the United States.

It is gratifying to find that states that have legalized the activities of licensed marijuana companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) are contributing to reducing the rates at which underage marijuana use takes place.

420 with CNW — Marijuana Industry Expects to See Spike in Sales This Holiday Season

The holiday season is here, and while most industries will see a slight decline in profits, marijuana sales are expected to go up. Reports from Leaflink show that cannabis sales rose by more than 30% in the week leading up to Christmas last year, in comparison to the previous four weeks of 2020. Additionally, sales on Christmas Eve last year rose by 61%, in comparison to the previous four Thursdays.

Leaflink, a unified marijuana platform, also reports that on the days leading up to Green Wednesday November, they saw an increase of more than 10% in sales. If sales from Green Wednesday are any indication, the cannabis market will see a significant jump in sales this year.

Glass House Brands Inc., a company based in California, also saw an increase of more than 40% in its sales across its locations on Green Wednesday, compared to the 2020 sales day. This was the same case for Jushi Holdings Inc. and Beyond Hello, its retail brand, which saw an increase of more than 110% in Green Wednesday sales, in comparison to the prior year’s sales.

The rep for Terrasana, a dispensary chain in Ohio, stated recently that the company expects December to be its highest-grossing month in 2021. Expectations grew after Terrasan increased transactions and revenue by 33% and 23% respectively in November.

eCommerce retailers also expect sales to increase this month. Tyler Browne, the owner of To the Cloud, an online retail vapor store based in California, stated that he expected sales in December to be good for the whole marketplace, in particular those looking to begin anew next year. He added that while sales for 4/20 in April were great, marijuana was becoming mainstream, which caused the weed holiday to be less impressive because every day was 4/20 for most consumers.

However, not every part of the marijuana industry sees an increase in sales during the holidays. For instance, cultivators are busiest in April because that’s the time for harvest and in October, when new cultivators are introduced. Once the plant is harvested, other companies are given the task of processing and packaging the product.

Grove Bags is one of the companies that does this. Chief of Staff Jeffrey Eisenstodt revealed that the company’s busy season began in the summer and peaked in September or October. He added that while the holiday season was good for marijuana purchasing, it marked the end of the harvest season and a downturn in demand for packaging.

Not every company is likely to see a meaningful spike in their sales activity this festive season, unless they have gone out of their way to manufacture the best possible products while also nurturing their brand in the way that some leading entities, such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS), have been doing.

420 with CNW — Having the Marijuana Munchies? Here’s Why

Cannabis has grown in popularity as more states legalize the herb for recreational and/or medical use. The herb can be consumed in different ways, with the most common methods being through edibles and smoking. Most users usually like to have access to their favorite snacks or meals for consumption after a successful smoking session. This is mainly because of the munchies.

While the term munchies is familiar to most, not many know why munchies occur. Today, we look at a couple of factors that can be used to explain why you get munchies after consuming cannabis.

Did you know that inadequate sleep gives rise to the munchies?

How, you might ask? Well, various studies have shown that a poor sleep schedule causes an increase in appetite.

In one study, researchers explained that lack of adequate sleep caused changes in food intake, biasing an individual’s food choices toward options that were more energy dense, without modifying total calorie intake. They added that their results, which focused on the impact of sleep deprivation on the brain, suggested that neural processing of odors was amplified in primary olfactory areas in the brain after sleep restriction.

This means that a full night’s rest may help prevent the munchies.

Additionally, research has also found that THC stimulates the olfactory bulb in a mice’s brain, which causes them to eat more than they normal would. The researchers hypothesize that this also happens in humans.

Data suggests that THC stimulates receptors in the hypothalamus, which causes a hormone known as gherlin to be produced. This hormone regulates hunger.

In addition, cannabis reduces an individual’s inhibitions. The substance causes the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is linked to pleasurable sensations. While there are many benefits to this neurotransmitter, it can also lower an individual’s inhibitions. Dopamine is known to control the pleasure and reward centers in an individual’s brain, which means that once enough THC is consumed, one may find it almost impossible to say no when it comes to eating a favorite meal.

This is why researchers believe that reduced inhibitions have a significant effect on an individual’s cravings and may result in the consumption of foods that they normally wouldn’t consume.

Despite being a tad inconvenient, munchies are no longer a mystery. The next time you have a smoking session with your friends followed by the munchies, you now have an explanation. These sessions are likely to occur more often in areas where cannabis is legal and companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) operate.

420 with CNW — Colorado University to Study Impact of Marijuana on Exercise

Studies on the use of marijuana during exercise have produced varying findings, with one study finding that older individuals who used the herb got more exercise done when compared with those who didn’t. To make sense of the drug’s benefits, the University of Colorado Boulder plans to conduct a study that will focus on how legal market marijuana impacts performance during exercise.

The research will assess CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and the effects these compounds have on an individual’s body during athletic performance.

Laurel Gibson, a PhD student in the institution’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, stated that marijuana had been linked to a decline in motivation, adding that simultaneously, researchers had seen a growing number of anecdotal reports of individuals using it in combination with everything from running and snowboarding to yoga and golfing.

Prior research in exercise neuroscience suggests that cannabinoid-like chemicals that an individual’s brain produces naturally are what cause “runner’s high” rather than endorphins. The institution will also examine whether supplementing marijuana during exercise will induce the runner’s high effect.

The research, titled the Study on Physical Activity and Cannabis Effects (“SPACE”), is currently looking for 50 volunteers who already use marijuana while exercising. The study will include three sessions.

During the first session, participants will take a baseline physical and cognitive test, where researchers will measure each individual’s heart rate. After this, each participants will be directed to go to a local dispensary and pick up either a THC-dominant strain or a CBD-dominant strain.

For the second session, each participant will be observed while they are working out when sober. During the session, participants will be required to run on the treadmill for half an hour and answer questions every 10 minutes that assess things such as the pain they’re in, what they’re thinking about and how hard the workout feels.

For the third session, each participant will again be observed while they work out, this time after using the strain they were assigned during the first session.

The researchers hope that by comparing marijuana and sober workout sessions, they can find evidence supporting the herb’s benefits for exercise. Researchers conducting the study also hope to discover other benefits of marijuana as well.

Angela Bryan, a professor at UC’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, stated that if marijuana could ease inflammation and pain, thereby helping older individuals to become more active, that would be a great benefit.

As the academia gets in on studying the effects of cannabis on consumers, industry actors such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) are likely to be more credible when they share with the public what they already know about marijuana products.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (NUGS) Aligning Long-Term Strategy to Position in Vertically Integrated Marketplace

Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCQB: NUGS), an emerging leader in the U.S. cannabis marketplace, is taking strategic steps to ensure its position in the growing cannabis market in California. Within the sector, sales of legal adult-use cannabis are expected to reach roughly $7.2 billion by 2024, up from 2.5 billion in 2018, according to Statista (https://cnw.fm/J2aOe). “Cannabis Strategic Ventures is aligning its long-term strategy with that growth in mind, as the company remains focused on shaping the future of the cannabis industry by striving for constant evolution in products, places and people,” reads a recent article. NUGS recently signed a memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) with California-based Devine Solution Inc. with the end goal of increasing its cannabis production capacity. The MOU outlined NUGS’s plans relating to its proposed acquisition of a Devine Solution-owned 15,600-square-foot indoor cannabis cultivation facility that has the potential to produce more than 7,000 pounds of premium cannabis flower per year for NUGS. “This deal represents the potential to sharply increase our premium cannabis production capacity and materially augment our status as an emerging leader in the vertically integrated California cannabis marketplace,” said NUGS CEO Simon Yu.

420 with CNW — Easing Global Travel Restrictions Bring More Cannabis Consumers to US

Cannabis tourism in the United States was just starting to pick up steam before the coronavirus pandemic struck. More than a dozen states had already legalized recreational cannabis and tourists, especially from countries without legal adult-use cannabis markets, were eager to sample recreational cannabis during their visits. However, as the virus started to spread around the world, the United States closed its borders to international travel as Americans prepared for a long period of self-isolation. More than a year and a half later, America began opening its borders to the world.

Unsurprisingly, this has caused an uptick in the number of cannabis tourists visiting from abroad. Some recreational cannabis sellers are already seeing increased tourist numbers while others are expecting an influx of international visitors after winter. Retailers who have served international customers in the past say they have to nail a couple of things to optimize these interactions. They take time to engage with and educate the tourists and make sure price structures, including local fees and taxes, are clearly explained. Most importantly, they hire bilingual budtenders.

Las-Vegas-based Planet 13 is already serving international visitors now that some borders are back open. According to the director of retail Lowell Brown, out-of-town visitors were 80% of Planet 13’s clientele with 10% of them being international travelers. Once the international travel ban took effect, the Las Vegas store focused on local customers, switching to a curbside-pickup and home-delivery model to make the process more convenient and safer for the customers. At the start of June 2020, Planet 13 went back to offering 24/7 service.

Colorado’s Native Roots, which has a store near the Denver International Airport, also drew a large percentage of its revenue (10%) from international travelers. The first few months of the pandemic were hard, says district manager Chad Ricketts. Ricketts, who manages the Tower Road store, says he has seen a noticeable increase in foreign customers. However, it is still a long way from the numbers the store used to see before the pandemic. On the other hand, Nicole Campbell, a retail operator in Nantucket, Massachusetts, saw an influx of domestic tourists over the summer.

She expects international tourist numbers to increase significantly during the November 2022 tourist season. Plenty of foreign shoppers have never seen a legal cannabis retailer before, she says, and visiting one is quite an exciting experience for them. She notes that some of the domestic tourists who visited Nantucket last summer may decide to go abroad next summer.

An uptick in cannatourist numbers would generally be good for the entire marijuana industry, including established companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) that would enjoy increased sales volumes.

420 with CNW — Factors Impacting Users’ Marijuana Experience

With more than three-quarters of all American states now allowing some form of cannabis, the controversial plant is more accessible to the public than it has ever been. No longer is cannabis associated with drug addicts and criminals; normal folk are incorporating cannabis into their routines while remaining valuable members of society. However, many users fail to get the effects they seek from cannabis due to the plant’s unique nature. Unlike most drugs, cannabis affects people differently depending on a wide variety of factors.

Your reason for consuming marijuana. What do you wish to gain from using cannabis? Are you looking to alleviate chronic pain or anxiety? Are you trying to focus and boost your creativity or would you rather relax and mellow out on the couch? Using cannabis for pain relief will not have the same experience compared to someone looking to beat insomnia or alleviate an inflammatory skin condition.

The type of product you use will have a major effect on your experience. Choosing a product that doesn’t align with your goal may not result in the experience you were looking for. The cannabis industry is diverse, and companies have developed formulations for a wide variety of functions, including alleviating pain, inducing sleep and improving recovery times after exercise. Picking a product that aligns with your goal will be integral to having an enjoyable experience with cannabis.

The strain or brand. Different varieties of cannabis will have varying cannabinoid levels. Some strains or brands could have a lot of THC and minimal CBD, another may have a lot of CBD but a little THC, while another one may have equal amounts of THC and CBD. Cannabis also produces terpenes and flavonoids that could affect the overall experience. Read up on the strain or brand you wish to buy to ensure you get the effects you are looking for.

The method of consumption. Cannabis has a wide variety of consumption options, and each of them impacts users differently. Smoking flower and vaping will result in almost immediate results as the cannabinoids in the smoke are absorbed into the bloodstream once it reaches the lungs. The effects kick in within two to five minutes and last anywhere from an hour to three hours. On the other hand, edibles take 30 minutes to an hour to kick in, with the effects peaking in around two hours and lasting for up to 24 hours.

Dose. As expected, the dose you consume will be directly tied to your experience. A certain dose of THC may leave you feeling relaxed and happy, another could leave you filled with anxiety, and another may boost your focus and creativity, In most cases, a higher dose of cannabis will cause adverse effects like nausea and general discomfort, so experts recommend a minimum dose of one to five milligrams for beginners. Your experience will also depend on your rate of consumption, meaning how long you wait between doses, as well as whether you’ve eaten or not.

Coupled with a clean, healthy lifestyle and smart choices, cannabis can be a valuable addition to your life. It’s going to be a trial-and-error process, especially if you’re a beginner. Take it slow, starting with minimal doses, and work your way through a variety of products to find the one that best suits your needs.

With entities such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) manufacturing a huge array of cannabis products, it helps to do your homework so that you choose exactly what will address your needs as a marijuana user.
