Additionally, Colombia has cheap land that can be used for growing marijuana. The cost of agricultural land in some locations, such as Florida, is very high and this makes it hard for companies to access large tracts of land that they can devote to growing marijuana. Colombia doesn’t have such problems.

There is an abundant supply of skilled and semi-skilled labor in Colombia. Growing marijuana can be a labor-intensive undertaking, so affordable labor is critical for a successful operation. Colombia checks this box as well.

Should someone using marijuana in a state where it is legal fear that they will lose their job or have their job application rejected? Pro-marijuana advocates are starting to show that the answer is an emphatic “no” and they are demanding for action in this regard.

It is ironical that California, which paved the way for recreational marijuana across the country, doesn’t have protections for workers who use legal marijuana within its state borders. Courts have ruled that the laws legalizing marijuana don’t shield workers from being fired for using marijuana and the attempt of lawmakers to correct this situation was vetoed by Gov. Schwarzenegger during his term in office.

However, things aren’t all bleak across the country. For starters, 15 states, including Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island have all passed laws banning discriminating against job applicants or employees on the basis of their use of marijuana.

Nevada was the first to take this significant step after the state passed the law in June and Gov. Sisolak signed the bill. This law will take effect in 2020.

In April, the New York City Council approved a measure that bans pre-employment marijuana testing. This action shows that local authorities are ready to take the lead on this important matter if state legislatures take long to act on issues that the people find important.

In the past, the courts of law have largely upheld the right of employers to fire an employee for using marijuana or refuse to hire one who tests positive for the drug. However, this tide seems to be changing as well because many courts have ruled in favor of protecting the workers’ right to use marijuana in states where such use is legal.

For example, the right of employees to use medical marijuana in Massachusetts was upheld by a state court last year. Similar rulings were made in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

This year, federal courts also moved to protect this right when a federal court in Arizona ruled that a Walmart employee was wrongfully terminated on the basis of her use of medical marijuana.

The winds or change also seem to be reaching Capitol Hill as a bill was introduced in Congress seeking to protect federal workers from having their employment status determined solely on the basis that such employees use marijuana in states where it is legal.

Industry watchers are convinced that entities like TransCanna Holdings Inc. (CSE: TCAN) (FRA: TH8) and VIVO Cannabis Inc. 420 with CNW – Mexican Senator Files Cannabis Legalization Bill as Supreme Court Deadline Looms

Barely a month before the deadline given by the Mexican Supreme Court compelling the government to pass legalization legalizing marijuana elapses, a senator has filed a bill to end prohibition.

Sen. Julio Menchaca Salazar, the chair of the Senate Judicial Committee and a member of the ruling party in the country, filed the bill that seeks to legalize the possession, cultivation and use of marijuana by adults.

The bill intends to amend two existing laws while also providing for the use of medical marijuana. The bill will also legalize the use of industrial hemp in the manufacture of textiles.

During a speech delivered on the floor of Mexico’s Senate, Salazar argued that the prohibition of marijuana only benefited criminal enterprises. He also pointed out that it was possible to legalize and regulate the marijuana market, and he cited the example of different states in the U.S. that had done so successfully.

The introduction of this bill was made just a week after the Mexican Senate announced that it was going to conduct a series of events that were geared at encouraging dialogue about the objectives and the likely challenges that may be faced while the legal cannabis industry is implemented.

Talk about reforming Mexico’s marijuana laws has been an ongoing thing, but the movement only gathered momentum after the Supreme Court made a crucial fifth ruling last year to the effect that the government was in violation of the constitution by prohibiting adults from consuming recreational marijuana.

That ruling effectively tied the hands of the government and forced it to begin working out how the recreational marijuana industry can be regulated. In fact, Salazar revealed that legislators would use their recess in the summer to draft a legalization law.

True to that promise, a bill was introduced from amongst the many that the public had been told about. Since this particular bill is coming from a leading figure in the ruling government, there is a high likelihood that it will be passed without major changes. President Lopez Obrador has also spoken in favor of legalization, so it is unlikely that the bill will encounter any serious hurdles.

When the bill is eventually passed and implementation begins, yet another neighbor to the U.S. will have legalized marijuana and this could apply subtle pressure on the U.S. to reform its own marijuana laws as reform advocates would refer to the success attained in those neighboring countries.

Industry analysts believe that marijuana industry players like The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) and Therma Bright Inc. (TSX.V: THRM) (OTC: THRBF) take comfort in the hope that marijuana reforms will eventually take place at the federal level in the U.S., so it is just a matter of waiting out this interim period.

420 with CNW – Federal Money to Facilitate Research into Removing Pesticides from Cannabis

A quarter of a million dollars is being handed by a U.S. federal agency to a biotech company so that research into how dangerous pesticides can be removed from several crops, including marijuana, can be done.

Brooklyn Bioscience is the lucky startup that won the two-year grant worth $250,000 from the National Science Foundation. The money will help to further the company’s efforts to engineer an enzyme with the capability of breaking down organophosphates (OPs). OPs are pesticides that have been found to be extremely hazardous to the environment and humans.

Marijuana farmers will be especially interested in this enzyme because research has shown that when organophosphates are taken into the body after a process of combustion (through smoking marijuana, for example), the pesticides are more dangerous than if they were ingested orally.

The enzyme will also come as a godsend to marijuana farmers in various jurisdictions, such as Colorado and California, where the cap for the acceptable level of OPs is much lower than what is permitted in other jurisdictions.

Organophosphates are used to increase crop production because they keep deadly pests at bay. However, these compounds aren’t water-soluble, so it is nearly impossible to wash them away using water.

If the research into producing an enzyme called phosphotriesterase succeeds, farmers will have a low-cost way of breaking down OPs into harmless forms which can be removed using water.

The pesticide industry is estimated to be worth $17 billion in the U.S. alone and at least 10 percent of that market is for organophosphates. This underscores how important it is to develop biological ways of efficiently controlling the levels of those organophosphates in different crops so that human health and the environment are protected.

The enzyme may end up being used in many different crops, but the press release issued by Brooklyn Bioscience emphasizes that the ongoing work will result in pesticide-free marijuana, wine grapes and many other high-value crops.

Toward the end of last month, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that it was welcoming public comment about ten pesticides that are being considered for approval for use during the cultivation of industrial hemp.

A similar process isn’t on the cards for marijuana since the crop remains federally illegal. This prohibitionist stance has been blamed for putting consumers and the environment at risk since the states which have legalized marijuana either for recreational or medicinal use have been left to develop their own consumer protection regulations without federal guidance.
