CannabisNewsBreaks – Crop Defenders Ltd. Featured in Article posted at MMJDaily

Crop Defenders Ltd., a Canadian bio control company, was featured in an article titled “Newly reared Aphidius Ervi strain strong tool against aphids,” which was recently posted at MMJDaily. The article highlights the destruction aphids can cause, the declining effectiveness of a known biological control, and the solution Crop Defenders Ltd. has introduced to the market. “By rearing an indigenous strain of Aphidius Ervi that is two times bigger than its imported peers, we have developed a product that is distinctly superior to anything available in the market, out-performing the other strains in field efficacy by extensive margins,” the team with Crop Defenders said.

About Crop Defenders Ltd.

Crop Defenders was developed and devised by the founder, Dr. Ishtiaq Rao. Before Dr. Rao was “Dr.” Rao, he saw how much money there was to be made in pesticide sales, so he decided to study entomology. At this time, agricultural pest control strategies were entirely based on pesticides. One year into his entomology program, Dr. Ishtiaq Rao would witness chemical sprays that caused birds to fall from the air, dead. Sometime later, he visited hospitals and witnessed people who were very sick as a result of rampant pesticide use. He used to see people come to the villages for fresh air, now the villagers themselves were dying for fresh air. It was after seeing all this that he made the decision to never sell chemical pesticides and made the life-changing decision to get into biologicals. 420 with CNW — Medical Marijuana May Be Future Treatment for Alcoholism

Research carried out by the School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria along with the Canadian Institute for Substance Abuse Research revealed that people who used medical marijuana experienced a decline in their alcohol consumption.

The study involved 1,000 medical marijuana patients in Canada and examined them on their habits, which included questions on their alcohol consumption. The study’s findings revealed a decline in alcohol use.

The study asserted that marijuana can affect the use of other psychoactive substances, including illicit drugs, tobacco, alcohol and prescription medications. However, little research has been conducted that looks into the factors linked to these changes in substance use.

During the study, 18% of the individuals who were polled reported that they abstained from alcohol, 85% claimed that they decreased the drinks they consumed every week and 44% reported a decline in the frequency of their alcohol consumption as they used medical marijuana.

From the Canadian medical marijuana program, a sample of 2,102 individuals provided their data, with each individual giving answers based on their medical marijuana use throughout the study and how it affected their alcohol consumption. More than 970 respondents who used alcohol at least 10 times over a year before starting to use medical marijuana were also included in the study. The researchers then assessed retrospective data on amount of alcohol and the frequency of use before and after medical marijuana initiation.

It is estimated that about 107 million people around the globe suffer from alcohol use disorder. This is a physical and mental addiction that’s common. The use of marijuana/medical marijuana to help decrease alcohol use is good news for many. Additionally, the WHO reports that marijuana is 114 times safer than alcohol, with alcoholism killing 3 million individuals around the globe annually.

The study findings suggest that the use of medical marijuana may be linked to reductions in alcohol intake and cessation among medical marijuana patients. Liquor is the most common recreational substance in North America, and it has high rates of mortality, morbidity and criminality as a result of its use. The authors of the study claim that these findings may bring about better health outcomes for medical marijuana patients and improve general safety and public health as well.

While this is only one study that looks into the link between the use of alcohol and medical marijuana, it may be the key to more research that supports marijuana treatment as a way to keep off liquor.

420 with CNW — What’s Next for Medical Marijuana After NJ Legalizes Recreational Pot?

A week ago, New Jersey legalized the sale of marijuana. The state has allowed the sale of medical marijuana since 2010 when the Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act was approved. Currently, upwards of 80,000 individuals in the state use marijuana to help alleviate or treat symptoms of various conditions, which range from epilepsy, cancer, nausea and pain to glaucoma and ALS.

The state’s medical cannabis program is designed to help some individuals improve their quality of life and others to ease their last moments of life. However, there are those who are concerned that the legalization of recreational marijuana for adults may influence the medical cannabis program. In various states, the launch of a recreational marijuana market has severely damaged the availability of medical marijuana.

The rise of the markets may influence some patients to ditch the doctor’s office visit for self-medication using the recreational products. Additionally, the marijuana strains that medicinal patients use, especially those with low THC levels, often become unavailable. The increase in recreational markets therefore indirectly leads to growth in overall THC levels in the marijuana sold in a state because many growers opt to sell only products with high THC levels.

Research also shows that specialized edibles normally purchased by medical patients also increase in price after the legalization of marijuana. An analysis was carried out by the Associated Press in four states where medical cannabis was available. The study revealed that in those four states — Alaska, Colorado, Nevada and Oregon — there was a decrease in the number of medical marijuana patients after the legalization of marijuana. In the state of Oregon, the number of medical marijuana shops dropped to two from 400.

There are many individuals who rely on medical marijuana, so if the medical marijuana dispensaries in New Jersey were to close down, the result would be tragic. The prejudices that prevent marijuana from being approved as medication do not help prevent this. These prejudices persist despite the many studies and trials that prove cannabis to be a medicinal plant with various benefits and a bonus recreational use as well.

The research is said to be insufficient though, as researchers look deeper into understanding marijuana and its strains as well as the conditions that it can help manage. To help do this, the Cannabis Education and Research Institute (“CERI”) was formed to advance research on cannabis. Apart from understanding the plant’s botanical properties, the institute is also calling for the end of federal restrictions that may impede research in this area. The removal of a prohibitive designation, such as the classification of marijuana as a schedule 1 drug, would only open the door to more research. This would be helpful in saving medical marijuana for individuals who need it.

A company you need to allot some attention to in the marijuana space is Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD). The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has boosted the cannabis delivery services offered by this firm to those in the San Francisco area.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Willow Biosciences Inc. (TSX: WLLW) (OTCQX: CANSF) Announces Q3 2020 Results, Operational Update

Willow Biosciences (TSX: WLLW) (OTCQX: CANSF), a Vancouver, Canada-based company focused on manufacturing pharmaceutical-grade cannabinoids via synthetic biology, has released its financial and operating results for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2020. According to the update, Willow Biosciences reported significant advancement in its operations and strong liquidity. The update reads, “The third quarter represented another significant move forward for us, as we completed our first pilot campaign as part of our final development stage before we begin commercial production, which is anticipated to commence around the middle of 2021. From the pilot, and with our well-advanced downstream process, we were able to produce appreciable quantities of CBG as sample material at greater than 99% purity with no detectable THC. We saw significant demand globally for our sample CBG from a variety of cosmetic, food and beverage, and nutraceutical companies looking to qualify our product for commercial purchase in 2021. Building on these results, we plan to run at least one more pilot in the fourth quarter of 2020 to both further optimize our process for commercial production as well as meet the demand for sample material of CBG from potential customers. We are well positioned, both financially and technically, to start producing at scale in 2021 and transition from a research-based enterprise to a company with revenue generating operations.”

420 with CNW — Federal Marijuana Legalization Bill to Get Floor Vote in December

Steny Hoyer, a U.S. representative from Maryland and the House Majority Leader, wrote a letter to his colleagues providing details about the upcoming legislative session, slated to run November to December. That letter indicated that the long-awaited floor vote on federal marijuana legalization will happen, though he didn’t mention exactly when that’s likely to be during the brief session.

In his letter, Hoyer explains that the House will vote on the MORE Act. This bill seeks not only to decriminalize marijuana but also to create a pathway for the expungement of nonviolent, marijuana-related convictions that have made it nearly impossible for scores of Americans to secure employment, access credit or even find appropriate housing. These bottlenecks have prevented the affected people from contributing positively to the economies of the states where they reside.

It should be remembered that this same bill had been scheduled for a floor vote back in September. However, a number of Congressmen and women who faced tight races to retain their seats felt uneasy about voting on marijuana legalization while the House had failed to pass a COVID-19 stimulus package. The vote was therefore called off, and the Majority Leader promised to bring up the bill after the dust of the recently ended elections has settled.

Last week’s elections saw massive wins for marijuana as five states passed marijuana measures either for medical or recreational cannabis. That approval means that now more than one-third of the country has some form of legalized marijuana, including jurisdictions such as South Dakota and Montana, which are seen as very conservative.

Public sentiment is also massively in favor of federal cannabis legalization as evidenced by a recent Gallup poll, which found that nearly seven in ten Americans support the legalization of marijuana.

It is therefore not surprising that the House wants to vote on the pending marijuana bills since this is in line with what the public wants. Reacting to Hoyer’s letter about the planned floor vote, Rep. Barbara Lee, who co-chairs the marijuana caucus in the House, said that the success registered in the legalization ballot measures voted upon last week showed that it was necessary for Congress to get up to speed with the needs of the public.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, also expressed his agreement through a tweet regarding the planned floor vote. It now remains to be seen whether the bill will have sufficient support to pass.

420 with CNW — Connecticut Governor Says Legalizing Pot Good for Public Health Amid Pandemic

With several states legalizing cannabis use, marijuana tourism has been on the rise. Cannabis tourism, or traveling across state lines to purchase and consume the infamous plant, attracts millions of visitors and dollars to states that allow recreational cannabis. However, with the coronavirus pandemic raging, traveling across state lines for cannabis may not be safe, says Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Gov. Lamont said that legalizing cannabis amid the coronavirus crisis would be a big win for public health. With work-from-home and social-distancing measures in place to curb the spread of the virus, the last thing states need is people driving back and forth across state lines for marijuana. Connecticut doesn’t allow recreational cannabis yet but is surrounded by states that do, creating a situation where consumers are more likely to travel to neighboring states.

During his interview, Lamont stated that officials have “got to think regionally when it comes to how we deal with the pandemic, and I think we have to think regionally when it comes to marijuana as well.” When asked whether he would pursue cannabis legalization next year, Lamont said that he thinks he will.

Connecticut is facing a budget deficit of $2 billion, and the governor has shied away from increasing taxes or cutting government spending. Without stimulus funds, he says, Connecticut may very well slide into a mild recession and suffer even more job losses. The cannabis industry has proven to be quite resilient during the pandemic, and taxing cannabis sales would be a great way to close the deficit and boost revenues.

“Right now, I’m surrounded by states — New Jersey and Massachusetts — where marijuana is already legal,” said Lamont. “I don’t need a lot of people driving back and forth across the border. We’re trying to keep people close to home as best as we can right now. I think legalizing marijuana, doing that safely and making sure no poison is laced in, I think is one way to keep people closer to home.”

Although voters in neighboring New Jersey voted in favor of a referendum to legalize cannabis during last week’s election, marijuana possession, use and sales will still be prohibited until lawmakers pass enabling legislation for the program. In a separate appearance, Lamont stated that the passage of cannabis legislation in New Jersey as well as ongoing cannabis reform efforts throughout the Northeast underscores the need for Connecticut to enact cannabis policy change.

420 with CNW — Four Reasons Why Cannabis Is Good for Women’s Health

In recent times, marijuana has become popular, and researchers have been able to prove many of the benefits it provides for both mental and physical disorders. Both women and men face various health issues; however, some issues impact women more significantly. For example, cervical cancers, depression, heart attacks, menopause and melanoma exhibit more frequently in female patients.

Through the use of edibles, women are slowly discovering the health benefits of marijuana. Below are a few reasons why women should use marijuana for their welfare.

May help in mental ailments

Both women and men are affected by mental illnesses. However, these illnesses appear to be more serious in women. The most common mental health disorders in women are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression; some of their significant causes include abuse, family responsibility and career.

Marijuana helps decrease depression and anxiety in women through the use of its antidepressant properties. Consuming marijuana in small doses aids in the release of serotonin, thus alleviating anxiety and stress.

May be used to relieve menstrual cramps

Menstrual cramps, or dysmenorrhea, usually occur during menstruation and can be painful. This pain occurs mostly in the lower abdomen and may be minimal for some women and severe for others, even reaching the point where a woman’s everyday activities are impacted.

Menstrual cramps are usually more severe at the beginning of the period and may cause back pain as well as dizziness, bloating, headaches and nausea. Marijuana may help reduce pain during menstruation. A 2015 study demonstrated that marijuana can be used to decrease menstrual pains. In the study, 192 women were surveyed, with 85% revealing that they used marijuana because it effectively decreased their menstrual pain. Most consumed cannabis by smoking or ingested it in the form of edibles.

Can be used as an aphrodisiac

At times, women may experience a low sex drive, which can be attributed to poor eating habits and not exercising regularly. While dietary changes may enhance sexual energy, consuming aphrodisiacs such as marijuana, which is a natural aphrodisiac, may increase a woman’s libido. Additionally, some women have reported less penetration pain during intercourse.

In another study, researchers found that women who consumed marijuana had two times higher sex drives and achieved more satisfactory orgasms as compared to women with irregular cannabis usage.

May alleviate skin issues

Environmental and lifestyle factors affect women’s skin in different ways. Pigmentation and acne are the most common issues. Using hemp seed oil may help maintain healthy skin. Cannabis’s anti-inflammatory properties may also help relieve eczema and acne. CBD, which is derived from the cannabis plant, may also help slow down the aging process while protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful rays and pollution.

Where marijuana use is concerned, the adage less is more appears to be true. Lower doses of authentic marijuana products appear to provide the benefits of cannabis. As always, if you’re taking medication or have any medical condition, consult your health practitioner before consuming marijuana in any form.

420 with CNW — Research Finds Off-Duty Cannabis Use Has No Effect on Productivity

The cannabis industry is without a doubt one of the fastest-growing industries. After decades of prohibition, attitudes toward the controversial plant are changing, with 35 states legalizing medical cannabis and 15 states allowing recreational use. Still, many employers worry that cannabis use, even while off the clock, can reduce employee performance, ultimately impacting the bottom line.

According to recent research, however, there is no correlation between off-duty cannabis use and reduced productivity at work. First published in May 2020, the study sought to determine how using cannabis at different times of the day affected people’s ability to meet their job requirements as well as their behavior and attitude towards their colleagues and work respectively. Despite cannabis’ infamy, the plant is one of the most-used drugs in the country, with an estimated 20% of Americans thought to have used it in their lifetime.

Cannabis is known to reduce anxiety and induce relaxation without a morning hangover, making it perfect for unwinding after a day at work. Most cannabis drug tests check for metabolites, which are chemicals that remain in the body long after the drug breaks down. This means that an employee can fail a drug test and be penalized for cannabis they consumed over the weekend or even a week ago.

In the study, 281 employees who used cannabis and 281 direct supervisors participated. The employees were asked to report how frequently they used cannabis over the past 12 months. Specifically, they were asked questions regarding a number of parameters, such as in a timeframe of two hours before they started their work shifts, how often they used marijuana in the past 12 months during their workday, and how often they used the substance over the past year in a duration not exceeding two hours of leaving work. The supervisors were asked to observe as well as evaluate their subordinates’ performance.

The researchers found that using cannabis before and even during work negatively impacted employee productivity, as expected. Cannabis use reduced \concentration and ability to solve problems and effectively carry out tasks as well as an employee’s tendencies to assist other employees and function cohesively in a team. Cannabis use before and during work also increased employees’ propensity for counterproductive behavior, such as excessive daydreaming.

However, using cannabis after work did not impact employees’ ability to complete their assignments the next day nor their ability to relate cordially and professionally with their workmates. Unlike alcohol, employees who used cannabis after work did not exhibit reduced productivity nor an increased propensity for unproductive behavior the next day.

CannabisNewsBreaks – The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TSX: TGOD) (OTC: TGODF) Announces Q3 Financials, New Leadership Appointment

The Green Organic Dutchman (TSX: TGOD) (OTC: TGODF) has released its Q3 2020 financial results. In addition, the company announced a leadership change and provided business highlights for the third quarter ending September 30, 2020. TGOD saw total revenues for Q3 2020 total $5.7 million, which represents a 119% increase over the same quarter last year. Of that, $3.84 million was categorized as Canadian cannabis revenue, and increase of 41% quarter over quarter. In addition, loss from operations and G&A expenses were both down significantly. The company also announced two leadership changes: chief financial officer Sean Bovingdon will be serving as interim CEO, and Michel Gagné will be taking over COO responsibilities. “During the third quarter, despite certain production challenges that have now been addressed, we continued to deliver growth following the launch of our mainstream brand, Highly Dutch, in Quebec as well as teas and RIPPLE dissolvable powders,” said Bovington in the press release. “Our focus will continue to be on improving the execution of our existing production while developing innovative and distinctive products to introduce into more stores across the country. We saw encouraging numbers in October as we sold more flower, additional RIPPLE and tea variants, and launched hash in Quebec. We are looking to build on this growth while focusing on financial discipline throughout the company.”
